Pein's abilities
Nov. 28th, 2008 12:18 pmSome folks in the last chapter post were saying they were really confused about Pein's abilities/the different Peins/wtf is going on -- so I decided to write this up. I hope it helps a bit!
First off, we have two groupings of Peins here: reconnaissance team and diversionary tactics.
Reconnaissance team = the Peins you see around asking "Omfg, WHAR IS NARUTO?"
Diversionary tactics = the Peins who don't ask where Naruto is, but who just blow things up to try to keep Konoha in an uproar while the other Peins (and Konan) ask about Naruto.

Demon Realm (or, more appropriately, "Asura Realm") Pein: Can apparently shoot projectiles and charge his laser. This Pein only seems to function well when using long-range attacks. His defenses appear to be quite weak, as evidenced by how easily he was pwnt by Kakashi and the Akimichis in close-range combat. If you watch closely, you'll begin to see that most Peins seem to either be offensive Peins or defensive Peins, but rarely both.
The "Asura Realm" comes in with regards to this Pein's body, which is Asura-like. This Pein also appears to have originally been . . . some kind of cyborg? So what the HELL is it? Pretty bizarre.

Animal Realm Pein: (replacing the original Animal Realm Pein who was the long-haired Pein whom Jiraiya originally fought) Pretty self-explanatory; only fights with animal summons. Like the above Pein, this Pein would appear to be a long-range fighter. We have no evidence that she would be useful in close combat. HMM, LOOKIT! All the Peins chosen for "diversionary tactics" appear to be long-range fighter Peins, which makes sense, because if you need to be blowing shit up, then you need to be charging yer lasers and summoning yer animals.

Hungry Ghost Realm Pein: (or "Preta Realm") So hungry it can apparently "eat" jutsu-based attacks. Jiraiya found some way around this particular Pein during his fight, but it does pose a problem for anyone attempting to take it on. Unlike the first two Peins, this Pein would appear to be a more defense-based opponent. I don't recall any signs that it has any attacks of its own; it just seems to absorb the attacks of others. Put the first three Peins together and you do indeed have a pretty good team for going in and tearing things up, then cockblocking anyone who tries to stop you.
Reconnaissance:

God Realm Pein: Ah, the God Realm. Ostensibly the main Pein, or the mouthpiece for all the Peins. Unlike the first three Peins, this is a close-range combat Pein whose main power seems to be some weird gravity field around him which can push and pull things and repel attacks. He can also summon the chakra-sensing rain, which may go hand in hand with that "attractive force"...? I mean, maybe he's using the gravity field to drag the rain down from the sky. I'm a little lost on that one.
If he IS doing that, it sort of de-mystifies the "Pein is so godlike he can control the damned rain" idea, which would make sense. A lot of the magical-seeming things in Naruto world can be explained away by jutsu, so.
There is NO evidence that this Pein has any particularly awesome fighting jutsu; he has pretty decent moves, and he runs around stabbing at things with those black rods he always seems to be pulling from his cloak, but he doesn't seem to be a heavy powerhouse offensively skilled Pein like Asura Pein or Animal Realm Pein. Which would probably explain why, when Jiraiya came to Amegakure, Pein whipped out the original Animal Realm to take him on from a distance.

Human Realm Pein: Well, we've all seen that this Pein can apparently rip out souls, making it another close-range combat Pein. In longer range fights, it seems rather useless. Where the "human" bit of human realm comes in, I'm not really sure, unless it's in reference to reading human minds, which it seems to be able to do, once the souls have been, y'know, taken. I'm guessing this Pein has weak defenses.

Hell Realm Pein: This Pein can summon that big thangamafuck, which I guess is some kind of "hell", and toss souls into it. Okay, rather creepy. Doesn't seem too much different from Human Realm Pein in that respect, except with the added "Hell" bit. I'd venture to say this Pein also has relatively weak defenses, since friggin' Konohamaru managed to get in a hit on it.
A bit more on God Realm Pein's power:
For those confused by the Kakashi fight, Pein's force field is why when Kakashi tried to attack him, Kakashi automatically went flying backwards.

So basically, Pein can just stand around daydreaming about porn (and probably DOES, AT THAT) and pwn you if you try to touch him. This makes him a challenge to attack, but it's also admittedly a little boring to watch.
When laid out like this, the keys/secrets/strategies to beating Pein or at least taking him on seem a bit more obvious, I think. It's apparent that some Peins have strong defenses and weak offenses, some Peins are long range types, and some Peins are close combat types. No Pein is great or 'godly' in everything. Taken together, all six at a time would be invincible, but splitting them up, it's possible to see how they could be beaten.
And nothing splits you up quite like trying to singlehandedly take down a whole damned village.
Of course, here is the other issue: Pein's bodies revive. We saw that with Jiraiya. They revive because they're not really alive in the first place. Pein is being controlled from a distance (all evidence points to Nagato as the force responsible for this), so as long as all the "chakra receivers" remain intact, Pein's bodies will just keep popping back to life.
Solution: Break the chakra receivers.
This would appear to be how Jiraiya defeated the original Animal Realm Pein.

The big piercing on his face is totally broken on one side. And he didn't revive.
Of course, the question is, how to get close enough to the Peins (particularly the God Realm, whose piercings are smaller, anyway) to break the piercings. Well, THAT I can't say. I'm sure that's what it takes, though.
Alternatively, you could smash the machinery that operates Pein's bodies, and that'd probably work, but hey, it's off in Amegakure. That's not such a viable option right now.
So some people wonder, will Kakashi or a canon character become one of Pein's bodies? No, I guarantee you not. Leaving aside for a minute that I think Kishi is trolling and Kakashi isn't dead to begin with, I don't think it's so easy to just up and become one of Pein's bodies. I think there is some whole Frankenstein process to it (which Konan seems to be a big part of, to judge from what we saw from that Amegakure underling's mind). A body probably has to be laid out and "prepared" with chakra-receivers and whatever else. And maybe not all bodies take, at that.
Some people have asked about the big brain:
The big brain is a manifestation of Inoichi's jutsu when he's reading the Amegakure underling's mind. Jiraiya sent that underling to Konoha so they could gather info from him. From reading his mind, we see that he and Other Underling bring the corpses to Pein -- or, rather, to Konan, who intercepts for Pein. What's weird about that scene is, from the way the two underlings talk, it sounds like they've brought a LOTTA BODIES THERE. So... WTH. Just HOW MANY BODIES DOES PEIN HAVE?
Or, the more likely explanation is, not all corpses "take", for whatever reason.
Since the six bodies correspond to six Buddhist "paths" and Pein's name -- z0mg, PAIN -- I'm guessing each body has to have something specific about it to make it fit, to begin with. What that'd be, I don't really know.
SOOOOO, did I just make things MORE confusing? I hope not. :P

Date: 2008-11-30 12:54 am (UTC)That is definitely the face of a man whose mind is elsewhere ... because he's daydreaming about porn.
Better yet, I think he's daydreaming about writing fanfiction of himself. Really bad fanfiction, at that! Because any guy who would yell things like "Feel the pain!" in all honesty is probably the kind of guy who listens to bands like Evanescence and thinks their lyrics are really awesome... because his taste is JUST THAT BAD. There's no way his writing would be any better.
(I have the tragic feeling that my views of this character are getting further and further away from ANYTHING RESEMBLING CANON, but if Kishimoto isn't going to bother to develop his personality, I guess I will just project whatever the hell I want onto him! O_o)
UMM, OKAY, IN ALL SERIOUSNESS -- Jiraiya said the rinnegan allows you to use any attack
but I like your explanation better, but that's not what we're seeing here, is it? So it's pretty bizarre. It seems like the powers of the rinnegan are, for some reason, divided among the bodies. I'm guessing it ties back to that whole Sage of Six Paths thing; "Six paths" or whatever.Perhaps the rinnegan breaks down the original body of its owner, forcing them to have to split their soul into new bodies? The rinnegan does, I think, stand for 'rebirth'.

Date: 2008-11-30 01:59 am (UTC)"I coming!" he yelled as he climaxed. "Feel the pain!"Rinnegan. Rinnegan. Someday, I will learn how to spell that word, dammit. Maybe it's the active force behind the body transfers? The only other similar abilities I can think of are Ino and Shikamaru's jutsus, which are fairly weak and constrained by a short time limit. Maybe the rinnegan would, in theory at least, let you take over everyone in the worlds' bodies, thus acquiring all their jutsus? Damn, Orochimaru must be jealous.
