Well ANBU is almost like a rank, but it's not officially so. Almost all ANBU are jounin but not all jounin are ANBU. Furthermore, I don't think that all ANBU do assassin work either. Many are simply bodyguards for the kages. They probably also do information gathering, torture and interrogation, etc.
Anbu is not a rank but a job. :) The Anbu are commanded by the Hokage directly and all are masked to disguise their identities, so it's not to be clear who's Anbu and who's not. Anbu literally means Dark Department.
No, it's not a rank. When I was in karate there was something similar to the dissociation from rank: there was a "red belt" position given to certain people who helped the instructors, so no one knew what their rank was. ANBU is the same; since it is made up Chuunin, Special Jounin, and Jounin, the rank is removed in favor of only displaying the position -- because that's what matters. Uzuki Yuugao is ANBU, a position under the direct jurisdiction of the Hokage, and that's what matters.
does sub-rank imply below rank? (forgive me... i'm working on my second degree in science and this word discrepancy bothered me a little) i've heard that special jounin was a specialization of someone in one particular level (i.e. interogation) but weren't up to jounin levels all around (i.e. taijustu etc etc etc), thus was given the special jounin title instead. but i wasn't sure on the reliability of this information, and well, i think of sub-*** (whatever you want it to be) implies that it's a specialty, but did not imply a below ranking. for instance, i'm a forest geneticist, which is obviuosly a sub-group of geneticist, but my degree isn't any less than a regular geneticist (it's actually equivilant to an honours degree in genetics).
so, does sub-rank imply sub-jounin? or has this all been explained in a resource that i haven't got around to yet? ... sorry if i sound snotty and b*tchy... i'm a little annoyed at the other library people Not being quite while i study!... >.> ok, i'll stop now =D
I get all of my information from my sister, who is fluent in Japanese and has the fan books, as well as frequents Japanese forums and websites. I trust very much that her information is accurate.
