As for why the fanfics and all have them together, it probably has something to do with wanting a pair of adults together for those who don't really like shouta. Either that or just the fact that its hot *shrugs* And finally... why not pair them together? There's weirder pairings out there.

I've often wondered about what basis the pairing has. XD I've heard that it's because they both acted like parental units toward Naruto. So like Iruka = Naruto's mom and Kakashi = dad.

...XD I think that reasoning is even more wtf than the pairing itself, but hey, whatever, Kakairu is still one of my favourite pairings. Even if it makes no sense.

:/ Kakairu is a pairing that has way more believeability than a lot of others you see in this fandom. Sasuke would never go with *anyone*. I can't see it. Sakura would never go with anyone except Sasuke. I can't see it. Gaara? Not interested either. I just can't accept fics with those characters because they automatically become out-of-character. While Kakashi and Iruka have very little interaction, it is very posible there's something going on "off-screen". See underneath the underneath, eh? I think their personalities fit well together. Kakashi is a goof, but he's got a dark side too, which is well-paired with Iruka's kind and nurturing personality. They both value friendship and the village, have both lost loved ones, and both teach what it really means to be a ninja.
The point is also made that I sometimes like to read about, hay, adults. I'm 22. Reading about kids that are aged 13-ish seems kinda...weird..sometimes.

My belief is that everyone loves Kakashi, right? So, naturally a yaoi pairing has to come up. Who to pair him with? Well, Iruka's the likeliest option cos the kids are...kids...ew and the other adults aren't as fitting. Think Asuma/Sandaime/etc. I think this was pre-ordained before even Genma arrived. mmm..Genma. Yeah, and they both look after Naruto. And Iruka is almost Kakashi's opposite, I guess.

have we ever had proof that Icha Icha is completely straight? I mean surely it hints to be that b.c Jiraiya's "research" focuses on women, but we never really know the complete context of the novels and they could be more in it than that. I don't really know either way, I'm just contemplating, I suppose.

As for the pairings, that's the great thing about fandoms, anything can go (with mixed recpetions, of course) and somehow the Kakashi/Iruka pairing became cannon in the fandom. Not that I don't enjoy the pairing myself.

I can't stand KakaIru, but it's just one of those things. In any fandom (especially one with as many characters as Naruto) you're going to find lots of crazy nonsensical romantic pairings. I don't see anything wrong with it, it's part of the fun.

Also, like others have said, just because Icha Icha Paradise has a boy and a girl on the cover doesn't necessarily mean it's all straight on the inside. And even if it is, the fact that Kakashi likes it doesn't actually tell us whether he's straight/gay/bi/a/anything else. Just tells us he's a bit of a perv. ;)

LOL, I'd hardly call KakaIru canon. I don't think Kishimoto's gonna write it into the manga anytime soon. It certainly is popular in fanon, though. I think 99.9% of doujinshi must be KakaIru o_O

A great majority of pairings like SasuNaru are concerned with future-based circumstances (actually now that Sasuke has run off, it's sort of impossible to come across fics that aren't at least slightly AU). A good deal of smut concerning the Rookie 9 and co. does take place in the future (age 17,18,19ish) and stories involving 13-year-old genins are usually only shounen-ai at most. Plus, if you consider the time warp of nearly 3 years, all the characters are nearing 16, which, isn't that unbelievable of a time to become sexually involved.

I can see SakuLee though, just because Lee is so persistent...and...glaringly obvious. Gaara could possibly go with Naruto with the I-owe-so-much-to-Naruto and Naruto's I'll-save-you-no-matter-what and just the whole we're-so-alike angst going on. Sasuke could possibly like Naruto as well with the whole rivalry, closest-person, refuse-to-kill, risks-life-and-saves-a-million-times-from-billions-of-ice-needles thing. Even if these characters were to go out of character, it would be okay if only for short durations, because, hey, love does weird things to people, and characters would be terribly one-dimensional if they always exhibited the same traits over and over even in extreme emotional situations.

I personally can't see KakaIru because I don't like the excessively uke Iruka, which, so far, exists in almost every KakaIru fic I've read. I like uke men, sure, just like how I like uke Narutos, but there's a difference between a uke and a blushing schoolgirl. Most of the KakaIru dynamic concerns a really perverted Kakashi and a blushing virgin Iruka, which, I don't find appealing. Iruka might not be Kakashi's superior, but someone age him a few years or two! He's not a 14-year-old sneaking peaks at porn in the back row of the bookstore!

KakaIru isn't canon in the least, but they sure are paired off on official merchandise a lot. =P Haha. So either the people who enjoy the pairing are feeding off of that, or vice versa.

Even though they don't interact a whole lot, to me KakaIru does make a certain amount of sense. From the way I see it their personalities have a good chance of working well together. Odd how that barely shows up in doujinshi, though. There always seems to be extremes of Kakashi being ultra perverted and Iruka being very innocent and pure.

But to be honest I don't think that Kakashi should really be paired off with anyone. It just doesn't make sense to me. But I guess I don't mind Iruka so much. In my mind, somehow it just works out.

Saying "I don't get such and such pairing" is totally invalid for fandom in general. Maybe you don't get it within the context of canon but there are very few canon Naruto couples. I don't really like Draco/Ginny in the HP fandom, but that doesn't mean I don't believe someone else might.

In the fanfiction world of Naruto, everyone is doing everyone.

Sakura's finally dating Sasuke, but she's cheating on him with Ino, but Sasuke's really in love with Naruto. Meanwhile Shikamaru begins dating Ino and Temari, while secretly doing Chouji on the side. Tsunade, Orochimaru, and Jiraiya all in a small hut somewhere reliving Woodstock '67. Meanwhile Naruto and Kiba bicker over Hinata, who is secretly screwing around with Shino. Gemna is having a threesome with Asuma and Kurenai, but he's also in on Anko and Kakashi. Meanwhile all the Sand siblings are doing each other, too, though Gaara somehow lusts after Sakura and Temari was already said to be with Shikamaru, however, Kankuro is one lonely kid, but he has his puppets.

However, Sakura also falls madly in love with Kakashi and is torn between her two loves. Tenten and Neji get together, but are soon in a threesome with Lee, though Lee is getting a little to close to his handsome sensei, Gai. When Sasuke mysteriously dissappears, he's found again by Tsunade, while he's getting molested by Orochimaru. Anko, of course, is insanely jealous, because she knows what that tongue can do! Shizune, the poor deprived girl, is never paired with anyone. Ever. Except Tsunade. But who can resist those "assets"? Poor child.

My friend, I have merely scratched the surface of all the crack pairings out there... Oh, Kakashi and Iruka is just one of the more popular crack pairings I suppose.

Really, what everyone isn't getting is that fandom /= canon. Fandom is so totally seperate from the reality of the actual story. Sakura and Sasuke aren't together, he's made it clear that the only thing in his heart is revenge. Iruka and Kakashi aren't together, they very rarely are seen together. Naruto and Hinata are not together, for the time being, as Naruto's too braindead to notice her. Ino and Shikamaru aren't together, as Shikamaru's too busy boning Temari not even in a mindset where he's interested much in women.

THESE PAIRINGS ARE NOT PART OF THE STORY. VERY LITTLE OF NARUTO FOCUSES ON LOVE.

But we all get to enjoy fandom for just that reason! It's authors and artists and just all of us in general, sitting around thinking, hey, what if? And that spawns art and fic and discussion and OTPs and OT3s and all kinds of good stuff that is NOT PART OF CANON.
