A question

When Kakashi and Itachi are fighting, Kakashi asks Itachi about his bad eyes, and we also notice that his genjutsu has weakened. But later on, we also find out that it wasn't Itachi Kakashi was fighting. It was somebody disguised and controlled by Itachi.

Could it be that the only reason Kakashi thought that Itachi's eyes were bad was because he was fighting a clone instead of the real thing? After all, it hasn't been mentioned since then.

On the other hand, since the mangekyou sharingan is a forbidden technique, Itachi going blind could easily be a side-effect.

Any thoughts?

You are right...unfortunately you are about 40 chapters too late in pointing that out

There's no need to be snarky.

Kakashi's comment on Itachi's eyes wasn't based on the situation at the time, it was based on observations from their last fight. There's a mini flashback or two at the time he says it, showing the reasoning behind it -- like when Kisame said that Itachi using his eyes too much hurts him as well.

Kakashi didn't even know it wasn't Itachi's body he was fighting until after they'd killed it, so it couldn't have been that.

My thoughts are that Kakashi knew that developing mangenkyou and using sharingan takes a toll on the eyesight because he had experienced it himself while using and training his eye. (that's a sorta mini spoiler I don't know how far you've gone)

He made that comment even before they started fighting the Itachi clone, so I don't think Kakashi was judging by the fight then.

No because Kakashi assumes that Itachi's vision has weakened due to using the MS. Even though Itachi wasn't really there, Kakashi assumed it was really him, and was telling him about the MS' weakness due to the fact that he has it himself. That whole scene was pretty much Kishimoto telling us about the MS' drawback directly through Kakashi.

You mean kinda like how some of the Akatsuki members kinda superimposed themselves upon expendable people in Sunagakure? Or just clone?

It's always a possibility, but that feels like a plot hole to me o.o I don't like plot holes.

Very intriguing.

I thought that Kakashi's assumption about Itachi's loss of sight derived from the fact that he's gotten the Mangekyou himself and therefore experienced those side effects as well. That's my personal opinion, at least.

Kisame's constant reprimands about the danger of using those eyes too much also seem to imply there's some sort of side-effect, so I do believe Itachi's indeed getting blind. ^^

(But I could swear Kakashi made that remark before they started fighting, though I may be wrong. >_>)

Kakashi has the Mangekyou Sharingan in his eye. That's why he knows how damaging it is. After Kakashi uses the Mangekyou against Deidara, he's put in the hospital for a while. It's true, Kakashi would be a lot more damaged than Itachi considering he only has one sharingan and he doesn't have Uchiha blood in him, but the fact remains - It damages. By the way... Kakashi's Mangekyou Sharingan is so much cooler looking than Itachi's. I don't even like Itachi's actually.
