Story time!
Yeah, so, I have an aunt. She's 33 years old and has a Ph.D in plant biology and starting next year she'll be teaching full-time as a professor at my university.
She doesn't come over often (once every two months?) and whenever she does, we sit and chat in my room. She was over at my house a month or two ago and we were sitting in my room, with me explaining to her which animes I liked and why I liked them and who every single character was on each of my posters. XD
She wasn't the anime-watching type. She likes stuff like...Veronica Mars, Prison Break, Supernatural, and all that other non-animated stuff. I lost my voice after explaining the entire series of Naruto as it is so far and it was totally worth it because she deemed it interesting.
Then I had the idea of showing her one of the episodes I had saved on the laptop. I didn't have the first one there, and didn't want to start in the middle, so I went with the next best thing.
I showed herthe infamous episode 101: I Wanna See, I Wanna Know, I Wanna Find Out! Kakashi's True Face!
Seriously, best episode ever. XD I can't even remember how many times I've seen that one.
But she watched it, laughed at it, liked it, and went home.
A week later, she messaged me on MSN and told me she'd watched episodes 1 to 100-and-something.
My reaction: O____O;;; Holy shit.
A few days later, she'd caught up completely, even watching every single one of the filler episodes. She then started complaining about withdrawal symptoms and having to wait a whole week for a single episode to come out, and I died laughing because I created a Narutard. ♥
So yeah, she's obsessed with it now, and Naruto is her favourite character. I asked her why and she responded with the following:
"He's so positive and optimistic and always happy. Like, you know how he never gives up? It sort of motivates me to do things. I'm trying to be like him and be motivated to finish my thesis."
Naruto...thesis...ninja...plant biology...
There you have it. Naruto motivates people to complete their Ph.D's in plant biology. What more could one want from an anime? XD Shove that in the face of the next person who criticizes the "stupid ninja cartoon". HA.

Date: 2006-05-12 04:00 am (UTC)Your aunt is the win.
I tried that, sadly. But Naruto only inspires me to rewatch the series and write fanfic, not finish my homework. It's UNFORTUNATE. *total geek*

Date: 2006-05-12 04:07 am (UTC)I shall tell her that. ^o^
And OMFG, same here. XD It only makes me want to spend an unhealthy amount of time on LJ fangirling and awaiting every single chapter/episode.
And homework? PFFT. *gives it the boot*

Date: 2006-05-12 04:11 am (UTC)...for what it's worth, though, every time I watch an episode with Lee, I try exercising again for a little while until I realize how terribly out of shape I am. *sniffles* THE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS WOULD BE ASHAMED OF MY LACK OF RESOLVE.

Date: 2006-05-12 04:20 am (UTC)OMG, every time I see Lee and Gai training and making use of their springtime of youth, I feel like a lazy, useless slob. XD You're not alone in your shame! ♥
