... we just don't see it

I have a quick question(s).

Is it possible that there are universaties in the Narutoverse? Universaties teaching medicine (among other things)?

--Tlazohtzin

ETA: Another question(s).

Is there a difference between a regular medic and a medic-nin? If so, what are they?

Would medic-nins and regular students studying medicine learn the basics together, or would they be segregaded?

And what about the numerous cities/towns/villages lacking ninja? How do they get medical treatment?

ETA2: What do non-shinobi's in Konoha do? All I can recall of jobs that regular citizens held are resteraunts. Any ideas on other possible employment?

I would assume so. Otherwise how would the non-shinobi villages treat there illnesses and such?

Oooh, that's a very interesting idea. I don't see why not. Medic-nins have to learn somewhere. They can't all be like Sakura and have the world's best for a Hokage. XD

Presumably, there are medical teachers out there, a la the real world. As for the ninja/medic differences, ninja use jutsu while medics use...regular medicine. They would probably be segregated, since non-ninja would have no use for jutsu, and ninja-less villages could have standard medics.

Yes. Medic nins, as shown by Sakura, have at least the shinobi basics as well: they use chakra, have shinobi ranks... and they also place a lot of emphasis on dodging and the likes, necessary to keep them alive on the battlefield. Eventually, they're also expected to be support fighters or even fight themselves as last resort.

No doubt there are non-shinobi doctors out there, though all medics in shinobi villages are probably medic-Nins.

And what about the numerous cities/towns/villages lacking ninja? How do they get medical treatment?

Normal doctors, with probably inferior medical techniques since it's not sure if they have received chakra control training and the likes. But hey, they're not on the battlefield anyway.

Ino's parents run a flower shop. ^^ Shikamaru's parents have some sort of ranch, farm or property on which they take care of a rare kind of deer.

Interesting questions!

Maintenance.

No, seriously. Someone has to take care of the electricity and water systems. Someone has to clean up the ninja academy after the school day ends.

Also, architects and builders. I'm sure they needed plenty of those after the attack on Konoha.

In episode 2 of the series, there was a photographer that took Naruto's picture for his ninja file thing. I'm sure this guy works for non-shinobi, too.

I bet there are at least a few stores for ninja supplies, ran by non-shinobi or former shinobi. Ninja do run out of shuriken and kunai when they're on the battlefield.

How about those forehead protectors? Someone has to make them, right? I'm sure every hidden ninja village has a guy that makes forehead protectors. He probably makes large shipments of standard forehead protectors to the academy, and occasionally makes custom ones by request. Different colors (black, red, purple), different shapes (like the bandanna variety)...

Non-shinobi can have plenty of work. You just have to think about it.

If you broaden your view, and think of shinobi as a certain elite instead of the majority, then the world becomes a lot more like us. Basically the shinobi of the Naruto-verse are government-chartered fighting mages, and the Hidden Villages are where the schools are located. Everything else is very similar to our world, minus guns and internal combustion. Other villages in the Land of Fire probably send all shinobi hopefuls to the Hidden Leaf Village, and that's why they have so many shinobi in those villages.

There would be most jobs that any other normal village would need to function, because Konoha is a village -- ninja or not, people need to eat, to clothe themselves, to furnish their houses and all that. Also, not everyone manages to graduate out of the academy, right? and the ninjas who wash out or get injured during a mission need jobs too.

(I know a good fic where an OC is an apartment manager who was a genin and decided to stop to take care of her family's business because she really wasn't good as a ninja and didn't want to continue after her teammates died. The fic takes a very close look at how Konoha is run behind the scenes; here it is, if you're interested.

No, she's not a Sue. I hate Sues, and I like her. XD No pairings, either -- it's really more a study of how the village is run and how normal people think about shinobi and react to Naruto as a child than anything else.)

and oh yeah! there would also be traditional medicines, you know, herbal stuff and traditional remedies and all that. Maybe they have herbalists too? Those wouldn't need to be ninja.

The non-nin probably do the jobs that keep the town running like all towns need, including many things we don't see. Also, seeing as ninja such as the Yamanaka run a flower shop, it's possible some ninja work a little. I suppose the mother runs it as we've never seen her and she's therefore probably a commoner with possible help from the father since he [seems to be] retired.
