So I was thinking the other day... there are so many Naruto fan characters out there... and some are great others just make me want to pull my hair out. I know I work hard to make interesting and believable OCs but sometimes I honestly wonder where some people get their ideas.

So I pose this question to you oh members of Chuunin:

What is your biggest OC pet peeve?

Mine are Uchihas. I can't stand fan made Uchiha characters. Other than the three... well two now, running around, the rest are dead. And the reason always seems to be the same. (insert OC name here) wasn't there on the night of the killings. Honestly now, Itachi had that all planned out. And if someone wasn't there, I'm sure he would track them down.

In fact just today I saw one that was an Itachi's twin sister... that and for whatever reason they thought Itachi was only a year older than Sasuke. And this person was so proud of their character. I was hoping when I got to the end of the bio it would be a joke... oh no, but they were so happy with it.

I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but really... if you make an OC pay attention to the details of the story.

What about the rest of you? Any major make you want to scream moments?

My main beef with OCs is that the Naruto cast is already extensive--over-extensive, some might say. Why would introducing another character be necessary? In general, that's my main question--if you're going to be writing fan fiction, shouldn't it be the series' characters that prompt you to do so in the first place? Some fandoms may make the argument that no, it's the world/the worldbuildling--things like Pokemon, or Oblivion--but uh. Naruto is lacking in worldbuilding. XD It's the characters everyone loves, methinks, not the intricate government structure and hierarchy of power (which is not to say these things are not touched upon in Naruto--but they are hardly the main focus).

If you're writing plot!fic, however, I can see how some OCs may be in order. If Team Naruto is going to Kirigakure (for reasons unknown), there will probably need to be some ninja there, beyond Random Ninja A, B, and C. XD

In all honesty, though, I think my number one least favorite OC is Uchiha Shisui. And he is TECHNICALLY not even an OC. But if all you are is a name and the hint of a relation in canon, why should you be so important in fic?

I have nothing against fleshing out the rarely-seen characters, such as Tenten, Anko, Kurenai. This is part of the charm of fandom--to make the characters more than what they have been shown to be in canon. But SHISUI?

Most of the time when I see him, he's been created with the essence of OC--he acts like an OC, overshadows nigh everyone else present in the fic like an OC--he just bears the luxury of having a canon name.

This may simply be because I do not read fics with character/OC in their summaries, but I have read quite a few fics with Shisui in them.

So, uh. There really wasn't a point to that, except to rant a bit about my noncomprehension of Shisui's EXTREME popularity in fandom. XP I figure if ever there was a place to do that, it would be in this thread.

Biggest pet peeve? Kicking Sakura out of the team just for an OC to be placed there.

I love OCs, and I have too many Naruto ones to count, but there's a right way and a wrong way, and a bunch of bad reasons to justify making one.

Hmmm...I also don't usually read fics with OCs, but I've still read quite a few. And I've written one fic with OCs, only because it was a future!fic of sorts, but anyway.

I only have one opinion about OCs, if you have to use them, make them human. >.> Overly fail or overly cool makes them unbelievable and eyesores. Because in the end, the story isn't about OC but the canon characters. Unless it's a Mary-Sue fic. *keels over and dies*

I've seen some really good OCs out there, and there are people (amazing writers) who pull them off without any problem and the only thing I noticed was...they weren't awfully important in themselves, but rather like canon fodder and...normal.

But honestly, unless it's absolutely necessary (like the abovementioned other villages' teams) or say, future!fics, OCs should be avoided. /two cents.

Actually, you know what else irks me? All the OCs that just happen to be ANBU and as such, are super. And no one ever knew about them before because they were hidden away in the depths of ANBUland, like Sai. Except, you know, they're unfazed by all of the weirdness that ANBU must BE, given the way Sai is.

Oh yes, and as you said, she's Itachi's long-thought-dead twin. And Sasuke can find her and they can connect with each other and fall in love. XP

That's the point, isn't it? A well thought out character, be it canon or original, will never look horrible. After all, for the writers/mangaka these characters are their OCs.

Oh God, I hate, hate OCs with sob stories and emo-tragic pasts. *face-palm* Naruto's cast has enough of that. *cough*Sasuke*cough* It's nauseating. >.<;

Like the person above me mentioned, things like adding a fourth member without a decent explanation, or replacing Sakura for no apparent reason makes me want to kick puppies.

In the end, all it boils down to is how good your writing skills are and if you're willing to work hard for what you're writing.

I think that in some cases OCs are necessary; Ninja A, B, C or you know...shopkeepers and things like that. But what I really can't stand is when there's an OC that pretty much takes over a story completely; he/she's stronger and better and more special than everyone else, you know?
That really bugs me, especially lately, since that's basically how the filler!Characters work. D:

And of course Mary Sues. I can't stand it when some girl comes in and falls in love with (most frequently) Sasuke or any other of the males. I mean, okay it might've been sort of okay if it was an undeveloped character and she remained in the background, but that's generally not how Mary Sues are portrayed..

Having said that, I don't mean to lash out at anyone with an OC I even had one myself once, it's just my opinion. And I don't really read fics with OCs in them. Although I do beta for a friend who's rather big on the OC front; he writes really well, but yeah, not too fond of the OCs here. ^^;;

And like [livejournal.com profile] kalliel said, there are so many characters in Naruto, why create new ones when so many are in need of attention (Moar Tenten plz)?

As for Shisui; I reckon he's very difficult to grasp as a character, since we know nothing about him, and I'm not against incorporating him in a story as long as he's not OVERPOWERED or whatevs, because we don't really know what he was like. I'm writing a fic now where he's one of the characters, but his role is too small for him to make an impression i think.

omg, sorry for writing a novel

Yeah I know. Why would Sasuke change for some random Mary Sue when he doesn't even change for/consider the feelings of his friends and teammates? not that I think that he doesn't care deep down. He's not that cold
Urgh, it really bugs me. Then you have OOC on top of it. Of course, in some cases OOC is only amusing (read: crackfics and the like).
Blah, Mary Sues are the worst.

Yeah I agree with you. Absolutely. It's just that the baaad ones are bigger in number. It makes me sad. ;_;

one of my biggest peeves about fanmade OCs is their lack of original abilities. they always seem like a rip-off or another version of jutsus we've already seen :| ive never thought "ooo thats a cool technique" when seeing a fanmande jutsu. theyre always stupid e_e

i had thought of a few Narutoverse OCs a while back but i scrapped them mostly because they didnt bring anything new or interesting to the fandom.

Sasuke eyed the woman before him, his expression impassive but for the slight edge of curiosity in his eyes. "Itachi is dead. I killed him. I am all that remains of the Uchiha clan."

"You and me," she chastised, expression coy and (irritatingly, Sasuke thought) condescending. "Unless you don't trust me? But on what grounds can you base that mistrust? I've only ever told you the truth. This is more than can be said of many others in your life."

"Itachi lied. I should have seen through it."

"Is that something you'd like to tell him?" Sasuke regarded her with a blank stare. What was she getting at? "I'm his twin. Many believe twins share...a special bond."

There was that word again. He hated it. He needed it. Itachi, even Naruto and Sakura--had had the gall to show him that. And loathe though he was to admit it, there were some things he would like to say to Itachi.

Sasuke paused. He didn't need to rush into these things. Uchiha Ihcati--ANBU squad leader, twin to Uchiha Itachi--wasn't going anywhere. He met her gaze, eyes unwavering. "I just have one question for you, first."

She nodded encouragingly.

"ARE YOU FUCKING HIGH?"

:FFFF Wow, obviously it is too late at night. I've apparently thrown all caution to the wind!

Naruto is lacking in worldbuilding.

So much word. People can't even figure out what era of technology there is. You won't believe how tough this makes things for the Konoha sim I've been helping to make in Second Life. =_=

Well, not that I've ever written an OC, but I'd feel awfully weird making up a new jutsu because the actual jutsus are such bullshit and so ridiculous-sounding -- I mean, I love Naruto, but c'mon.

So the issue with making up a new jutsu is, you have to make it sufficiently bullshit enough to fit the jutsu make-up while still appealing to people. Some stuff just doesn't translate as well to written form. It's okay for them to scream out their jutsu names in the manga/anime, I suppose, but in a fic, it'd just look weird and off-putting. Same principle.

I'm bothered greatly by brainless, kawaii, sparkling, bjutiful, ivil, flower-cosmic-supapowah, luv-oriented, twin-something-lol?? OCs. And vampires, god, please no.
And by cigarettes. Be it smoking OC, be it suddenly making poor Shisui or Itachi a darkh knight of the night with a kewl cigarette dangling from the mouth. EWWW.

However, I don't see any problem when an OC is well-developed, with rich history, background and personality. In fact, it makes me laugh and sorry when people ban and throw all OCs into one sack, marysue. Some fans out there take their time to make their character believable and if they're having fun with the creation process, I don't see any reason to mud it. Not that I've seen that/been done to. We all are narutards. Some are happy messing with Kishimoto-san characters, some, from whatever reason - not enough of suiting charas in original Naruto to work with, for example - feel the need to make an OC. And when it's used in an original, good way, it can be as much enjoyable as story/picture with only Naruto charas and bring depth to those Naru-ones, emphasize on some traits. But I've read only a few good OC stories, and only one of those few had romance involved.

Yup. I's also sad to say this, but better stories are usually created by those who write without OC-as-one-of-main-chara. *headslamdesk* Have to agree though, it's much much easier to just write/draw something simple and kawaii than to try hard.

From the other hand, Naru-stories can be as much horryfying, with characters degenerated to a brainless kawaii level worse than any OC I've ever seen. Lol, come to think of it, it's a nice comic relief ;]

I with a passion hate OC's paired with canon characters. It's far too self indulgent on the creators behalf.

In general I avoid anything to do with OC's because I really couldn't give a hoot about them.

The occasional fanfiction that will introduce a new character because they are children of the canon characters is acceptable. Also any characters that we know exist but have never seen are ok as OC's (eg: The other Kages and Jinchuuriki)

I never understood the need of people to make their OCs 3204832 times better than everyone in canon. Defects are what make the characters in the series so cool, so why not give some defects or weird quirks to yours?

I have a bunch of OCs working as NPCs for a roleplay set 25 years after the end of the series.
Of course, it being a roleplay about politics and war, we needed lots of extra people to make it work.

Still, none of these OCs is allmighty and capable of doing everything without breaking a sweat, and I just LOVE giving defects to my characters too...
Below goes the Too Long; Didn't Read:
Summoner who can't quite control her summons, kid who can't turn off his eye based bloodline, guy who is awfully powerful during full moon and gets moody and depressed in new moons, guy who has super hearing and just falls asleep anywhere (a mix between narcolepsy and some weird jutsus)...
And also a bunch of "the child of" OCs... Examples are Naruto's daughter who barely survived a bridge exploding and has a weakness against genjutsu and a little Sasuke's boy who has... pink hair. Both kids share their mom. (Yeah, canon SasuNaruSaku ~_~)

Well, shutting up now, it was a fun recap xD
