Hmm. Something interesting I noticed.

I was really really bored today and for some reason I started calculating the characters BMI's (body mass index) using their stats from the new data book. I was just curious, and I found out that practically every single female in Naruto, and a lot of the males are "underweight" according to modern standards. XD

I know they're just anime characters, this isn't a rant against anime setting unrealistic standards or whatever, just an observation for fun. Apparently to be considered underweight your BMI must be under 18.5. A lot of characters were exactly 18.5 (like Sasuke and Naruto). Choji was like the only overweight character.

But here are some of the characters who need to eat a sandwich are underweight:
Sakura
Ino
Neji
Tenten
Sai
Yamato
Kiba
Hinata
Itachi
Temari
Karin
Gaara

Kinda interesting, I guess...XD

Yeah, it must be a Japanese thing, but all the characters are short and skinny. Hell, Kakashi's "tall" and he's like 5'11". Sasuke's 5'7", and Naruto's 5'5". Tsunade's apparently 5'3". Come on now.

But even the asian people I know aren't that small. I think it's funny that they're all supposedly super strong ninja, but without their superpowers my little sister could probably kick their asses. XD

Yeah, I noticed that too. I suppose with their lifestyle... Still, I would've thought their muscle mass would have made them at least normal weight? (like, for example, Brad Pitt's BMI indicates that he's obese because of his muscle mass.) But oh well. ^^ -shrug-

And with the height thing - I'm Asian, considered to be quite short, and even I'm 5'4". O.O Whoa. I'd never realised how short Naruto's cast was. XD

It is pretty interesting. Juugo's 6'7" and he appears to be the tallest person in the group at the moment. Unless some of the new characters turn out to be taller than him, 'cause he beat out Jiraiya, Kakuzu, and Kisame (I think...).

Although Sasuke's only 5'6" exactly. He's 2cm taller than Naruto, and yet looks much taller when they're drawn. Must be the hair. XD

I looked at your list of underweight characters, and Itachi and Yamato are the only grown-ups on the list. For children and adolescents, the standards about what is normal are a bit different. (But don't ask me about them.) Though I think that Hinata does not look very slim.

I also think that they should get some tables about average height at a certain age. I think that at least the rookie girls should have reached their final height by now, but maybe the boys are still growing.

The rookie 12 are still 15/17, though. While the girls might be fully grown by then, the guys probably aren't. Neji for example is still shorter/lighter than Hiashi (176.5cm, 66.4kg) and Sasuke's still shorter/lighter than Itachi and Fugaku, and Naruto's still shorter/lighter than Minato. We don't have any mom/daughter teams (well, except for Tsume and Hana, but they're both adults), but when comparing the adult women to Sakura/Hinata/Tenten/Ino...yeah, they've still got a bit more to go. Not as much, but at least the guys have a growth spurt or two ahead of them. XP

I'm guessing BMI must be different for Asian people, because almost all manga I've read that gives those stats you find a lot of characters like that. Also, look at Myavi.

Yeah, I know the Japanese at least use different BMI standards to America. I'm 157cm and by Jap standards my max weight is supposed to be 56kg................

Yeah, BMI measurements are crap. They don't differentiate between muscle weight, and fat weight, so it's not a very accurate measure of a person's actual weight, based on their physical build.

Yeah, I hit the short mark at 5'4 1/4", but I have two sisters that are taller than them. And my brother was 5'8" at they're age. XD

I always figured that the numbers were sort of well... pulled out of Kishi's ass. given their muscle mass if they were real they would most likely weigh more, the adults at least. (Yamato looks healthy to me if a bit on the trim side). as for them being short like some people said, they don't seem short to me. I know the average for females in the US is only 5'5". and the males in the series (well most of them) have time to keep growing. the only numbers that seem really freakish to me is Juugo, and whoever that five tails is (my god he's a giant!)
