Okay, I'm against smoking as much as the next person, but that was still lame. Why change something like that? I hope they at least have Shikamaru with a cig until he beats Hidan as it should be in the manga.

They left out the part where Shikamaru smokes it. Instead, he "chokes" on the smoke from the cig that fell from Asuma's mouth.

Because it would be considered promotion of underage smoking, as Shikmaru is only 16. Manga has a little more freedom than its anime counter-part, which was why Kishi was allowed to draw that scene.

gah. I'm so glad I'm no longer watching shippuden. T_T The animation team is crap, seriously. T__T I can't believe they left that scene out. It was one of the most heartbreaking scenes ever. T_T

That's why it was censored. Since it's aimed at teenagers, if you saw an underage character smoke regularly - as if Asuma didn't die and Shika did it for the hell of it - wouldn't you consider it as a form of endorsement of the activity when the age to do it legally is 20?

It's not the animation team's fault. Underage smoking in Japan is illegal, so it was censored.

I was wondering if they were going to keep that or not. I wonder how they'll handle the rest of this arc though, since the cigarette becomes rather symbolic. Maybe Shikamaru will just carry it around, but not actually smoke it?

I have to say though, it's kinda funny that the anime would censor underage smoking but not underage drinking (Or was Rock Lee's instances exempt for whatever reason?)

I have a feeling it had to do with culture. There are times where kids actually get sake in Japan, such as festivals. Since it's part of the normal culture the instance was probably over looked. However smoking isn't part of any such circumstances so it's more likely to be on the chopping block...

Or at least that's my guess at it.

What? They left it out? (I haven't watched the episode yet.) That part where he said "I knew I would hate smoking... the smoke gets in my eyes" or whatever he said was a really emotional moment I thought. Even though I'm all against smoking myself.

I have yet to watch the episode. Studio Pierrot lost all chances for an epic episode when Shikamaru looked so retarded as he ran to a dying Asuma.

At the end when Asuma was impaled and Shikamaru went running to him. His voice was fine, the drawing however, was so off, I can't bear to watch it.

At one point, it looked to me like Shika had some sort of cleft-lip (can't remember what the real term is) and another, girly hips!
I mean, how am I supposeed to find a scene like that sad if I can't help making fun at the drawing style? (I hope I'm not coming off as insensitive.)

My exact sentiment. It was by far, the beginning of his gloriest moment, and the anime had to choose to make him look like an ugly idiot. Like what happened, Pierrot? I had hopes not in the pacing, but at least the drawing, please?

Nope, not at all. Bleach's animation is far more unforgivable, and at times, I feel that Shippuuden's animation is what saved the horrendous pacing. But lord it's Shikamaru. Epic Shikamaru moment and they messed it up. The best moments of Shippuuden. It's hard to just empathize when ...he looks like that :/

I'll stay with the manga ...
