I have to do an essay on violence on comic books, generally manga, and my teacher would prefer it if I used more than one manga to use as reference. (I used MPD Physco as a first ref)

Now I have my laughs when I pick up Naruto and see that they've edited the page by adding towels, removing penis jokes etc, yet I don't have many volumes of the manga for a couple of personal reasons.

Would anyone tell me if there has been some editing in violence (like blood) when Naruto is handed to Viz to offically translate into english?

Or generally Japanese to Viz cuts.

I really need to get a full mark in the essay!

I'm not going to answer any of your questions if you're going to be that much of an arrogant elitist.

Not Naruto exactly, but since Viz translates Fullmetal Alchemist as well it might be useful. In the manga where we see Greed get chained to a rock in the Japanese it looks kinda like a cross whereas in the American release they changed it to make it look larger. I guess they didn't want everyone to think Greed=Jesus lol.

As for Naruto...apart from changing Lee's sake to 'special medicine' in his fight against Kimimaro and Sai's penis remarks there hasn't been anything that major, as far as I can remember.

I know that in the anime Viz made some pretty major changes to make it more kid friendly. The only instance I can think of where they made it less kid friendly was during Ibiki's head during the chunin exams. (The reason why I watch the subs instead of the english dubs.) As for the manga that have been edited, I'd check out Death Note, Basilisk, and Inuyasha. I do recall that the language was heavily edited in the Inuyusha mangas. In the Japanese version, Inuyasha's favorite word is f***. The english translations had that sanitized out of them. The Sailor Moon mangas (if anyone remembers that far back) was also sanitized rather heavily. You probably find scans of all of these at http://www.onemanga.com , but you'll need to read the fine print to find out if its a scanlation or an actual scan of the official translated version.

I would point out some differences, but your idiotic refusal to call the language by it's proper name makes me want to keep it zipped.

I thought their point was that they're studying Japan-to-America edits in particular... but I may be wrong.

I think you should have made yourself clearer on this point. I take it you want the American release only? Not the versions from the United Kingdom since they have different censorship laws then America?

Well, there's also this wikipedia article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Editing_of_anime_in_American_distribution - it has a volume about editing of anime (with examples from "Naruto")

Except as far as I know, the only company that is responsible for Naruto in English is Viz. The version we get here in the UK is the exact same as the US version.

Dude, Viz is an American company and they picked the translation up first. They're obviously going to think of an American audience first and use American slang in their translations. If you get them in Britain then obviously they're still good enough for the British market. You know, being in ENGLISH and all that.

That has nothing to do with it being in American English though!

Well tbh I think Viz have done a pretty decent job with Naruto, cept for the minor changes they did with Sai and the sake. Beats what happened when we got the anime on Jetix though, apparently it was even more edited than the original American dub lol.
