It was supposed to be a simple escort mission. The problem was that it happened to be the Kazekage thus over ten ninjas had to come along to be absolutely sure nothing would happen. But nothing was ever going to be that simple. It was never going to be that simple. As expected they had been attacked nearly two miles away from Konoha. They took care of the problem easily, but what they didn’t expect was to accidently stumble upon a particular missing-nin. Except they all knew stumbling upon this missing-nin was not an accident.
Four of the escorts were Team Seven. Since everyone else was too shocked to do anything, Kakashi was one of the first jounin to react. By using his chidori, Kakashi had caught him nearly off guard but he quickly counteracted it. That’s when all the other ninjas began to attack. When everything was coming at all directions, it was nearly impossible for Sasuke to dodge all their attacks. Naruto had pleaded with the other shinobi not to harm him but it was too late. Surely Sasuke couldn’t possibly fight all of them off.
And that’s when it happened. While standing on the sidelines, Sakura noticed Kakashi-sensei lift up his headband. Completely in a panic, Sakura leapt to her ex-sensei’s side. “Sensei – Please, don’t!” She pleaded but he ignored her for her own good and went ahead anyway. Not only would Kakashi be vulnerable, but he might possibly die trying to battle it out with Sasuke. Then she saw it, a kunai heading straight for his head. At first, Sakura didn’t do anything, thinking he would notice, but he didn’t so she quickly whipped out one of her own kunai and aimed it right at the one going for his head. Everyone could hear the audible clank when the two kunai connected and went in two separate directions.
To say that Sasuke was surprised was an understatement; he was completely horrified that Sakura had protected him. Although he didn’t show it on his face, inside his mind he began to worry for his well-being. Now that the escorts thought they had the upper hand, they attacked more and more fiercely. Kakashi had to act quickly; while trying to use his Sharingan uninterrupted, Sasuke saw it coming and quickly counteracted his attack, again. Then as if to add to the gloomy atmosphere, sky erupted in angry booms and rain came pouring down.
As the battle went on, Sakura could tell that Sasuke was finally wearing down at the multiple attacks. Sai threw a few ink monsters at Sasuke while Shikamaru used his shadow jutsu and others threw many kunai and other special attacks at him. On cue, Kakashi quickly used his chidori and aimed it straight for his heart. This was it, there was going to be no way out for him. Without thinking Sakura raced to get in front of Sasuke, her feet pounding the ground as she came closer. “Sakura!” Kakashi yelled out in fear but it was too late to stop the attack and Sasuke was too distracted to even notice.
Just as she skidded to a halt in front of Sasuke, ready to take the attack, Naruto shouted. “Sa-ku-ra!” He was there in an instant and just as the lightning jutsu was about to hit her heart, a flash of blonde and orange obscured her view. “You – you-”
“Naruto-” She paused a let out a strangled sob. “-don’t talk – don’t, save your breath.”
His mouth produced loud coughs and that’s when Sakura knew this was it. “Thank you.” With his last words, just like that, the light in his eyes left. Her sobs racked her body as her sorrow became worse and worse. She just couldn’t take it.
Her strangled cry could be heard in the deafening silence. “Naruto!” Sakura quickly leapt into action, trying to find any chakra left in him but she couldn’t find any! She started shaking him, slapping his face lightly and even attempted to use chakra. The fighting had stopped as Sakura bent over her best friend and let a few angry sobs escape her lips. “Naruto!” She repeated. “No, no, no, no, no. No!” A few more tears escaped. “Nar-Naruto. Please – you can’t-”
Finding it the perfect time to attack, her former sensei then lifted up his headband one final time to initiate the last blow. Sasuke was so busy looking at Naruto’s body that he didn’t even notice the attack coming. Since Kakashi barely had any energy left, it only weakened Sasuke enough to be tied down and chakra-less. With a loud heap, Sakura’s ex-sensei fell to the ground.
“Kaka-sensei!” Sakura’s voice brought Sasuke back to reality; he was now bound and he didn’t care, he was too busy looking at Naruto’s emotionless face. She slid to a halt as she reached her sensei’s side. His breathing was shallow and his chakra was barely there. She quickly instructed Hinata to go heal him in a safer area with Shikamaru following closely behind. Then she quickly went back to Naruto’s dead body.
She could hear coughing about ten feet away from her, “Sakura.” Her sensei was calling for her. Just about when she was going to use every ounce she had to revive Naruto, Kakashi stopped her. “Don’t do it.” She stopped herself from doing the unthinkable and allowed her body to collapse over Naruto’s.
But her sorrow soon turned into rage at she remember Sasuke was nearly three feet from her. “You bastard.” She snapped in between shaky breaths. “Why?” Her fists slammed down onto the soggy ground which caused the water around her to splash everywhere. “Why couldn’t you just let it go? Why couldn’t you just accept it? Why couldn’t you-” She paused remembering Naruto’s words. “-Why couldn’t you just forgive us?”
“Sakura.” He finally spoke.
“Shut up.” Then she splashed water onto his face, “Shut up!” In between her angry sobs and sniffles, Sakura bitterly griped the ground tightly which caused it to crack all the way to Sasuke. “I hate you.” She lied. “You – you bastard. You’re so – so, ugh – I want you dead.” When she spoke the final sentence her voice got dark and ominous. Then she lunged herself at him, only to be stopped by her own sensei. He was weak, but clearly strong enough to keep Sakura from doing something she’ll regret later.
It was clear when he held onto her that she wasn’t resisting. With his hands securely holding her back on her shoulders, he spoke. “Don’t do something you’ll regret later.” Then Kakashi slipped a kunai into her hand, “Whatever you do, remember Naruto.” That statement caused her to drop the kunai and gasp in shock because of what she was going to do. Then she grabbed the kunai herself and lifted it to her wrist.
Sasuke’s eyes went wide in fear. He shook his head in disbelief, this was Sakura, she couldn’t possibly be thinking of doing something so stupid. Without thinking, Sasuke yelled out in order to catch her attention, anyone’s attention. “Don’t.” Sasuke whispered, but not even he could stop her. As soon as their former teacher caught a glimpse of what she was doing, he was there again to grab hold on her wrist tightly.
He gave her a harsh glare and shook her wrists violently. “Look at me.” But his ashamed pupil didn’t dare look at him, “Look at me!” Kakashi angrily ordered. He was too angry, caught up in a blinding rage for losing a student and now another was going to take her life. “Sakura,” He warned with venom in his voice. Finally, she looked up at him, “I will not,” He paused, realizing just who he was snapping at. “I will not lose another member of my team because of another member.” By now, he realized that he had lost Sakura halfway through his sentence. He quickly looked around, there was no one but the four of them; Kakashi quickly shoved off his mask. “Stop being a child.” He chastised. “Sakura. Damnit, Sakura, Look at me!”
Completely forgetting the situation, Sakura looked up at the face she wished to see for so long. Now knowing the circumstances, she wished Kakashi-sensei never wore that damn mask. “Kakashi-sensei?” Then she broke down into tears, “Were you ever going to show him?” She sobbed into his chest, clenching his vest as she sobbed even more. Kakashi didn’t say anything; he didn’t even move except pulling Sakura closer and giving her a quick kiss on the head.
Meanwhile, Sasuke was stuck while the approaching figure came closer; he decided it was fair to warn his sensei. So he did the only thing that would get his attention. “Sensei.” Sasuke spoke out and nudged his head towards the approaching foot-steps. It took a few seconds for Kakashi to register over the shock that Sasuke had called him sensei. Now that Sasuke was tied up, Kakashi thought it meant that this was a promise and not just Sasuke’s way of getting his attention. Kakashi quickly pulled up his mask two seconds after Sai came to them. As Sai soon approached them, he quickly made sure to take a mental picture of Kakashi’s face because he knows he’ll never see it again.
With the almost equally emotionless face as Sasuke, Sai gave out the news. Sasuke couldn’t help but notice how Sakura’s face brightened when she approached with a sad smile. “They’ve elected you as Hokage,” Kakashi soon stood up and made his way towards the others.
Kakashi untied Sasuke’s hands and then tied them in the front. “Sasuke, make sure she doesn’t do anything stupid.”
“Hn.”
“Sakura, would you like some tea?” Sasuke didn’t quite get why Sai asked that question and why Sakura wasn’t reacting so fiercely. If anyone else had asked this question, Sakura would have pummeled them into the ground. Why did this person get such special treatment
Sakura shook her head. “No thank you. Get some rest, Sai; you’re still healing from your last mission.”
“Sai.” Sasuke spoke, “Take the kunai with you.” Sasuke ordered.
With a scrutinizing glare, Sai took the kunai that was nearly ten feet away and walked away with it. “Damn you, Sasuke.” Sakura muttered.
Sasuke growled; she couldn’t possibly be pinning this on him. “It wasn’t my fault.” The shinobi snarled.
This caused Sakura to snap, “If you hadn’t left then Naruto would still be alive! Everything leading up to now is your fault. It’s always been your fault! Don’t you get it? If he hadn’t been out all those years looking for you, he would still be alive! He would have become Hokage! Why couldn’t you just let it go, Sasuke? Why did you have to cause him so much pain?”
Instead of saying nothing, Sasuke sneered at her. “The dobe didn’t even stop me when I left.”
“That’s because he trusted you to come back!” Then she abruptly slapped him around the face. “And here you are, arguing over your friend’s body; he saved your life, Sasuke!”
Officially done with her whining, he snapped at her, “It would have been you!”
She was quite taken aback at this statement; it was going to be her. “It’s my fault.” She shuddered in realization. “The stupid fool was in love with me.” She bitterly admitted. Then she continued, “And I-” She stopped to take in a harsh breath, “I tried to stop him. – I told him I didn’t love you anymore. I lied to him – I lied to myself!” She slammed her fist down which almost caused a crater. “Baka.” She whispered to herself.
“Pathetic.”
Another strangled cry came out as a whisper. “Fuck you.” She snapped. “You’re pathetic, you’re tied up, and no one’s coming for you Sasuke! You’re alone and you’ll always be alone.”
“I’ve always been alone.” He supplied.
Then she broke down into more tears, “No,” She grumbled. “You’ve never been alone.” She paused looking back at her friend’s body. “He was always with you, always waiting, always there and how did you repay him?!” She screeched. “Never coming back! Just when I thought I was over you, I was ready to move on and you – you-”
“Tch.”
“Bastard.” Then she came completely enraged with him, “You’re so cold! You’re so – so uncaring! Don’t you get it, Sasuke?!” She then whipped out a kunai, “It was all for you! He spent years trying to bring you back and even then he had to die because of it! I can’t stand you!” Just about when she was going to stab him in the neck and end all her frustrations, she dropped the kunai. “No,” She clenched the ground. “I won’t.” Then using the blunt side of the kunai; Sakura knocked out Sasuke.
He could have sworn he heard her say: ‘Like old times, eh?’ Followed by a bitter laugh.
A Few things to clarify:
1. I know that Naruto tried to get Sasuke back, numerous times but since Sasuke sees everyone else as weak and lesser than him, he also sees it as not trying. Or that's at least how I see it. You may see it differently; I don't care if you say so but it's not gonna matter because this is my story and I basically can do whatever the fuck I want.
2. I know Sakura switched back and forth at the end, it's just to show that she's currently unstable.
3. Yes, he would remove his frickin' mask because a student just died, one decided to commit suicide and the other doesn't really care. Let's not forget the fact that Kakashi's father died the same way, mkay? Suicide. It's not to be joked about and that's why he took off his mask.
4. This is only part one. There's four more left - I think - and they'll be posted periodically.
5. I KNOW I fail at writing fight scenes. This is something I would actually like help in.

Date: 2010-06-09 03:48 pm (UTC)The story is quite good though, they are certainly as IC as characters in a fanfic can be. Have more faith in your story, no need to be defensive, it is quite good and I will sure come back for more.
