A odd theory about the leader's identity came to me today (so forgive the half-assed nature) but what if the leader is Kabuto or at least is connected to akatsuki somehow. First, is that Kabuto obviously has something up his sleeve and is not 100% loyal to Orochimaru. Second, it would explain how akatsuki found out about Sasuke joining Orochimaru so quickly. Maybe (just maybe) he was the one that held back the capture of Kyuubi because he wants Naruto to prevent Sasuke from achieving the mangekyou(?) sharingan. Why would Kabuto have ties to akatsuki ,well maybe his father is the leader or he once knew Itachi at some point. Who can say we really know little about Kabuto and it seems that Kishimoto is the type to explain things vie flash back rather that simple word of mouth explanations.

The Leader is the same one who was boss when Orochimaru joined Akatsuki, right? And I don't think Kabuto ever left Konoha before his outing except for a few low-key missions. It doesn't seem physically or logically possible. :/

I do think there's some kind of spy in the sound or Akatsuki. Jiraiya in particular knows a lot about the actions of both. How else could he know that Orochimaru had switched bodies?

I made an observation some time ago that Kabuto and Itachi graduated from the Academy at about the same time, but after much number crunching and considering several characers' ages, I came to the conclusion that Itachi graduated before Kabuto did - I don't know if graduation is yearly or twice a year or what, but I'm pretty sure they weren't in the same batch.

Their ninja registration numbers are only 30 apart from each other, though.. I think that's Kishimoto-sensei giving us a hint that they may have some sort of connection.

I think that the Akatsuki's information about Sasuke joining Sound and even his very appearance at curse seal 2, which Itachi was able to replicate in Genjutsu, has to be credited to their number one spy (and people disposal technician) Zetsu. ^^ He certainly saw that fight, but how much else did he see over that year.....

tho i am pretty sure most people have caught up in manga and anime, it might be an idea to put this behind a cut....
and the akatsuki ( the venus fly trap guy i think actually ) were spying on naruto's battle with sasuke iirc.

oh and maybe the leader could be a illusion where this huge fight occurs and the fighters at the cavern think they have the leader beat but it turns out to be a dud. You never know? Yeah I know my theories have holes.
