Before I start, does anyone know where I can find some really in-depth stats on the Naruto world - you know, different countries, the different kages, timeline of stuff happening, the Secret Ninja Wars, etc., etc. Stuff on the character

So here's a random question. Generally how would you guys rank the quality of Naruto fanfic you read on ff.net or anywhere really? I've been trying to find a good one for centuries now but to no avail.

Also...uh...what's everyone favourite fanfic genre?? (am and action/adventure gal)

To me a good Naruto fanfic, or any fanfic for that manner, is one that makes me want to keep on reading it no matter how many chapters there are. I once read a SasuSaku Fanfic that had 26 chapters straight, I think..

And if crack pairings are you thing, a good crack fanfic is one that convinces you that couple can actually work in that circumstance. =O

A good fic is one that keeps characters IN character, puts them in worthwhile situations (not overdone, cliche fanon situation) and has excellent grammar, flow, mechanics and spelling.

Mmm. General. But all anyone does nowadays is romance =\

Yes. Yes, indeed.

See, while I don't mind a lot of pairings, some of them just get me so badly, which drives me away from reading the romance side of the fandom. I do actively drabble some pairs - because it's short and sweet and stupid, but otherwise? Nah, that's just one more romance fic to throw to the dogs. But some pairings - oh my god, some pairings - I JUST DON'T GET IT. Itachi/Sasuke, Naruto/Sasuke, argh, just so many of them... WHY? The characters LOATHE each other. LOATHE and destroy each others lives. Why the hell does that = "I want to fuck your brains out"?

I don't know. I want to know. However, the Naruto fandom has added many things on my list of To Be Accomplished, which is a list of things that are incredibly ovedone in fandom but NEVER done RIGHT. On that list... god, there's so much. The major thing I'm beginning the outline of and working on now is a GOOD Naruto High School AU... just because I want to prove it can be done. And I tell you, the research on japanese schools, gangs, the fashion scene, the dance scene, japanese teenagers, mental diseases and all sorts of stuff, and trying to tie it all to the characters? SO FUN. It's a damn shame I've never seen anyone else look into what they're writing so much.

The reason that I ship for Naruto/Sasuke is because that they are so much like each other. If Sasuke is brought back I don't doubt that it would be by Naruto. Although Sakura cares in all honesty she doesn't understand what Sasuke is going through and she can't offer any type of solution or real help. Naruto and Sasuke have gone through hell and back emotionally and still Naruto cares for him. I don't buy that 'he is only doing it for Sakura or to show off because' if it was because of something so frivilous then he wouldn't have gone as far as he did. To Naruto the dond between them is precious because it was one of the first he has ever had.

Plus it's just damn hot same goes for Ita/Sasu (its asthetics really)

Mmm. That makes sense. However, just because they can relate, doesn't mean they could have a relationship.

Sasu/Naru is just really, really overrated. I've tried to find something to like about it, but when it's about as overrated as Sora/Riku of the Kingdom Hearts fandom (who are a duo that I find sickeningly like Naruto and Sasuke ;-;) it's hard to find any half-decent fic about them.

Guy/guy can be hot... but personally, in fanfiction, I gotta see a reason for them to be fucking like bunnies =P

Eh, the problem with Sora/Riku is that all the OCs(non-FF/Disney characters) are so incredibly cookie-cutter and crappy that it's hard to write any kind of decent fanfic with them. I hate Sora/Riku but it's not much worse than pairing one of them with Kairi(or...*gag* Goofy and Donald). It probably doesn't help my turn-on level that they're all so hideous-looking. ^^;

Naruto and Sasuke love each other a lot. I thought that was kind of obvious. ^^; Maybe at first they didn't like each other, but back then Sasuke didn't like Sakura and she didn't like Naruto. By the Haku fight, though, Sasuke was willing to sacrifice his life for Naruto and Naruto was crying and enraged holding him in his arms.

And then the big fight at the end of "Part 1" - the whole reason killing Naruto was so important to Sasuke was because he cared about him so much. And even then, knowing that he'd get the power to take his revenge, he couldn't finish the job. And Naruto with the "I may not have had any family but when I'm with you, I wonder if it's like being with a brother" and the tears flowing down his face, and even fighting with Jiraiya when he was hospitalized. It's obvious that they're the most important people in the world to each other, they just have very different goals and views on life.

That said, I don't like the pairing because it's done so badly by almost all the writers/fanartists/doujinshi. They should not be happy little gay boys frolicking about in the fields. It should be something like Spike/Julia or Seishirou/Subaru, something full of lust and other emotions, both good and very bad, but something that could never work out and have a happy ending. Of course, that's just one arrogant bastard's take. Either way, I don't think it's any less believable than SasuSaku or a lot of the other top pairings.

I think I mentioned in another thread that the only Sasuke pairing I actually like and find believable at this point in the manga is Orochimaru/Sasuke(maybe Kabuto/Sasuke). Delightfully twisted. :D

And high school AUs. Nooooooooooo.... They are the bane of my existence. I think the sad thing is that even series that are set in high school get high school AUs...except it's in America and Tohru is the "spoiled princess" and Kyou is the outlaw "sk8er boi"...will love bloom despite their social differences? And then a little piece of me dies inside.

Exception is this fic (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1390578/1/), which is amusing in how in-character everybody is, despite being a little warped and horny. :P

I like yaoi so.... for me the best fanfictions are the ones that have good pacing, good writing, and of course it must include a pairing you like. It also depends on how graphic you want the fic's to be. As to ff.net well sometimes you can find some really good ones and alot of the times you find mediocre stuff. Not to be mean (I will sound mean no matter what) but writing well does not come naturally to many. (man I have personally written some serious garbage on ff.net myself!) When I look over a quick list of my favorite's I notice I tend to go for alternative universe school type fics or very dark violent types.
Broken, Bondage, Spiral Falling, Chasing Naruto, Attraction, Vice, Whit surge red are some of my favorites. Mostly Naru/Sasu/Naru

Hmmm....Well I like fanfic with as little plot-holes as possible, as little OC's as possible, with character's that are actually IC, with explanations of how an original technique works that sounds sensible....Is not all stereo-types and cliche`s...Has good grammar and actually USES spell check...And if it updates often and has long chapters. Another thing is if it has many chapters, since I enjoy long stories. I don't really like Sasunaru or yaoi but I occasionally read them as long as they're well-written. I like one-shots and character-study's and angst, too. Super-powerful character's make a story boring [usually], especially if it is an OC. Crack is good too, when I really needta' laugh. I also get really desperate sumtimez, but that's just me. That's all I can think of right now...

There are actually a few really good stories on FFNET. Of course they aren't perfect, but they are pretty good. There's 'Transition Anchor' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1656578/1/) by Chelsee, 'Second Chances' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1851974/1/) by Red Crow,& 'A Fox and A Shark Walk Into A Bar' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1978502/1/) by Gigabomb. Those are just three though [and I'm sure you've heard of them, since they're all so good :D]. But these do prove that they're are, occasionally, good fanfic on FFNET. It just isn't worth it to wade through all the trash, though [most of the time].

Nice characterization, plot, and grammar. Though I think my view of what good characterization is kinda closer to fandom since I've been reading fics for so long. I like one shots more than longer stories, less chance of OOCness in the later chapters. I like action/adventure myself, though a good character study comes second. I also follow authors around since I'm certain they know how to write, so even if I don't agree with their characters it'll at least be readable.

Sna (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/261888/) have some really good Kakashi one shots.

Rayemars (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/237263/) also have some pretty kickass characterizations, Ripple Effect is her most well known work.

Istoria (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/56504/) wrote a really nice Sakura in A Golden Grey Mourning and Birds of a Feather. I also like her Tenten in Juppon Buki.

Saro (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/333434/) does more SasuNaru, FoxHunt is very nice and doesn't seems to have any pairing at the moment.

Rashaka (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/17830/) is nice as well, shorter chapters but everything gets across.

Phoneix (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/40531/) have some really nice Sasuke one shots.

In her Blind Spot (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2408847/1/) is a nice Hanabi one shot and her view of Naruto.

Currently reading The Road Less Travelled By (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2220769/1/) no pairing I know of, it's about what happens if Sasuke lets his team know more about the curse seal after getting it.

If you want to try out some other stories, [livejournal.com profile] naruto_recs have a lot more, some of them are hit or miss though according to your taste.

Hmm... how would I rank Naruto fanfic... Well, I'd say 95% of it is crap, but that's true no matter where you go in fandom (or in general fiction reading, honestly). It's just one of those sad facts of life that the decent fics are always hard to find. However, if you have time, it's worth watching the new arrivals at FFN every day, because good things do come in on occasion. I usually find at least one or two interesting fics every week.

Personally, my favorite genre is drama. I prefer fic with lots of character exploration and development; everything after that is secondary -- I like some ships (both het and yaoi), but really only as they further the character development of both people involved. I'm a big sucker for angstfic (8D) and I really like stories that look at the more gritty realistic side of shinobi life, as opposed to the shiny happy one we get in canon -- the fact is that these are twelve-year-old kids who are being raised to kill for a living, and I enjoy seeing people explore that idea.

A lot of Naruto fic IS rubbish, but don't dismiss ff.net. My best friend has an account there (which, granted, she doesn't really post her fic in anymore >__<) and she's a fantastic writer. I myself have an account there and have had reviews which are more than just a moronic 'OMG It's soooo good liek woah!1!!1!1! ^_____^', which shows that some people there have brains, at least.
If you have the time and the patience to look, you might find some real gems. I hope you do! ^^

It's usually all about luck to find very interesting fics on ff.net. But i wouldn't give up hope that easily. Since there ARE other fanfics than just those countless crazy parining fics and stuff.
Actually I have an account there and my stories are about everything else than silly teen/yaoi romances. I also enjoy reading adventure fanfics... stories with some action in it. If you're interested on that same genre, I'd be more than happy if ya'd take a look on my latest fic (http://www.fanfiction.net/~ijin83)... the one called 'Ferrous storm'. (I've had problems inventing good summary to it since it isn't just small 'alternative time-line' plash... so, don't be frightened). XD

Ok... I shall shut up now XDD

I like character/relationship studies, usually shorter stuff. I really like in-character stuff about the minor characters who don't get as much love in the actual series(Orochimaru/Anko *drool*).

And porn. It's good for the soul.

Not too fond of people who try to write their own story arcs(Team 7 is sent on an A-rank mission to Mist Village where Naruto meets a girl who has a dangerous secret!) or most cookie-cutter parody/"crack" fics, and I hate most AU(What if Kyuubi never attacked Konoha? What if the Uchihas hadn't been slaughtered? What if Naruto gets transported to the Prince of Tennis world? *gag*) and all self-insertion fics(A group of friends is teleported from the real world to Konoha village! Then they become Ninjas! Pairings: MexSasuke, MyFriendxNaruto).

And Kurenai. I need more Kurenai.
