Alright, we all know that Konohamaru is Sandaime's grandson.

But then Asuma has the same (last?)name as Sandaime (Sarutobi). So, could they be related as well?

And if thats so, what does that make Asuma and Konohamaru? Cousins? Brothers? Father and son?

... I have too much free time to think of these stupid quesitons... And I have no idea why I put it under a cut... x___x

They're not related. Sarutobi is Asuma's surname, and Sandaime's given name. I wasn't sure at first either.

Where are we explicitly told that Sarutobi is Sandaime's given name?

I always thought they must be related somehow, not just because of the name issue but because they actually look something alike. Kishimoto is better than a lot of mangaka about giving us family resemblances.

I'd go into detail, but this (http://www.livejournal.com/community/chuunin/1271701.html?thread=18114197#t18114197) sums it up pretty well. Enma called him that, his students called him that(which fits with Gai/Kakashi/Kurenai/Asuma-sensei), and his teachers, the Shodaime and Nidaime, called him that.

And no, it's not "explicitly" said, I'm just stating the logical answer.

I agree with the first poster up there. I remember Shikamaru calling his sensei "Asuma." It's the same with the Naruto team calling their sensei "Kakashi," and not "Hatake." As for Sandaime, I think we should just assume that his given name is Sarutobi. I remember that monkey-king-dude (the summon that Sandaime called on when fighting Shodaime and Nidaime) calling him "Sarutobi." It was probably for the saru part (saru=monkey), I would think that something that has been with him for a long time (assumed), they would be on a first name basis. Anyway, that's what I think. Thanks for staying tuned to this semi-long explanation. You can all throw tomatoes at me now XD

Hmmm... just commenting on the comments before mine. xD; But just wondering, what is the Sandaime's full name then? Is it just Sarutobi?

Tsunade, Orochimaru, Jiraiya, Konohamaru don't seem to have any surnames. None of the Sand shinobi do either. *shrugs*

Let's not forget Tenten!

That could be true... but it's awfully hard to tell. XD

But why would Kishimoto do that, then? I mean, if you were the writer of a manga/anime, wouldn't you make sure that you gave every character different names as to not confuse readers/watchers -- just like us?

Maybe he forgot Asuma's surname when he gave Sandaime his name? :P I don't think it was mentioned until the invasion part. Or he just wanted to give Sarutobi(which is the name of a famous, possibly legendary, Japanese ninja, Sarutobi Sasuke) to a Hokage with a monkey summon, but couldn't go back and change Asuma's name. Either way, he's come up with lots of names in this series, so it's not really hard to believe that he'd use a famous ninja name twice.

If he does say he's related, it wouldn't totally surprise me, but it just doesn't seem like he intended it that way from the start.

It just seems kind of strange to me that he would give such a legendary and known name to Asuma, a minor character in comparison to the Sandaime.
