I was talking to a friend about Naruto the other day and somehow we wound up discussing who was going to get with who in the series. I found that we both had completely different ideas of which characters would end up together and why and yet we couldn't really fault each other's logic. I just thought it was really interesting because it made me think of some things in the series in a completely different way to what I was used to and so hence the motivation for starting this topic:

Naruto doesn't seem to be the type of manga where anybody who hook up with each other, and I hope it WON'T! Like Vegeta and Bulma from DBZ. That. Was. So. ODD. But not as odd as Lulu and Wakka. *SHUDDER*

But anyhow!!! Taking a step away from THAT, there is one pairing I really like. XD Which is NejiHina! Sure, it isn't TOOOTALLY canon, but it has its reasons. I took a liking to it when Neji whispered to his father when he was younger that Hinata was cute. And I squeed to myself, "AWWW!!!" I like it more as a fluff/friendship sort of thing than full-blown romance.

Ships I support:

Shikamaru/Temari: Mainly I see this as being part of each character's development; Shikamaru grows to understand why his father would marry such a troublesome woman by falling for Temari and Temari comes to realise that 'her type' is actually quite different to what she thinks it is.

Naruto/Hinata: I think Hinata's shy admiring from afar will eventually result in the two of them spending more time together. I see Hinata as being the only person who will truly believe in Naruto no matter what and Naruto as being someone who sees Hinata for what she is and still likes her for it, whereas other people keep trying to change her true nature. Naruto sees her for what she is and encourages her to do the best with what she has.

Sasuke/Sakura: Even after spending a significant amount of time with Sasuke and sharing many experiences with him Sakura is still set on him and I think there have been moments in the series where we see that Sasuke feels something for her but he is putting it aside for the sake of his most pressing goal - being an avenger. I also think Sasuke doesn't truly understand why Sakura would like him, but I can see him coming back from killing Itachi at the end of the series and setting about the second of his stated goals - the reestablishment of the Uchicha clan.

Ino/Chouji: Once again I think this is a case of character development. Ino is shown to have truly grown past being someone who judges on appearances and for Chouji I think it would show his kindness being recognised.

Asuma/Kurenai: Admittedly my reason is 'because I think the story writers want us to see this.' I see no other reason for having them together a lot and then having someone ask them if their on a date and both of them being too hasty to deny it.

You hit the nail on the head there. I adore Ino/Chouji, for all of those reasons. If only I could find good fic, or ANY FIC, with the pairing. I've nothing against ShikaIno, but that seems to be all that exists for Ino as a character in pairing. Or with Sakura and I don't femslash for Naruto.

The other ships I'm interested in, you stated for me. Naruto/Hinata, Shikamaru/Temari, and I loved your reasons for Sasuke/Sakura. Not "into" that one as much as I used to be, but yeah.

LeexSakura - b/c he deserves to finally have something go right in his life aka get the girl
ItachixNaruto - I was actually influenced by hot Japanese fanart but justify it as Itachi really wants Kyuubi, hence he wants Naruto ;P
GenmaxHayate - really, there is no reasoning behind this one, it just...is
JiraiyaxTsunade - I think the chemistry between the two is mad and will eventually result in love (let me hope)
ShikamaruxTemari - b/c they were made for each other

The only ship I actively want to happen is Temari/Shikamaru, because I think they're hilarious together. And she could totally kick his ass.

I also really like Naruto/Sakura, although I don't think that's the direction the manga's going to take. But aside from Temari/Shikamaru and Tsunade/Jiraiya theirloveissofullofissues I kinda pair people off randomly and see what they do together. Makes for fun fic anyway.

Kiba/Shikamaru is my favorite. I think they mesh but clash well enough that it creates a realistic image of a relationship. they don't fit together like perfect puzzles that someone created nor are they exact opposites. Kiba has the spirit to get Shika's lazy butt in gear while Shika has the calm apathy to deal with Kiba's behavior. I don't know, it just works in my mind (tho i know it would be VERY unlikely in canon) (:

Asuma/Kurenai. i don't write them or even read them, but i would love for this couple to be together. i think it was episodes 81 and 82 (before and during the fight with Itachi) that it just clicked. Maybe it was Kurenai's blushing, i don't know.

Kakashi/Iruka, but the mere reason they appear to be complete opposites (ha, for all we know Iruka is a closet pervert! :) ) i can't justify this one as much as the others..

As for other couples, i will read just about anything else, but don't really actively support anything else.

Hn, pairings! no fandom is complete without them! Mine? A few:

SasuNaru -totally fanon based, but there's plenty in the canon to keep everybody happy. They also have a lot in common in the lonliness department.

OroKabu -Hn. Well. That one doesn't really need a reason.

SasoDei -Too obvious. ^_^ Even if they quarrel, they're so adorable! And if you mis-translate 'danna', its canon!

But with any fanfiction, the only way some pairings ever happen, its up to the author to make the characters and situations believable and it helps if the characters aren't in bed by the second page >.<

I think there was something somewhere where Kishimoto said he wouldn't put any official pairings in the series, because there's too much disagreement among the fans about who should end up with who. But... I'm another yaoi fangirl.

I ship NaruSasu mainly, and in that order. Why? Because I'm sick of weepy girly uke Naruto. Normally I wouldn't care either way, but SasuNaru authors have issues with keeping them both in character... Sasuke is more often than not bastardized and turned into a sex fiend, and Naruto suddenly gets weepy and emotional. X_x;;; Er... no.

Iruka/Genma. KakaIru has little to no actual proof, and while I don't mind it, a lot of fangirls think it's nearly canon. They interact... twice? And they argue. The Iruka x Genma thing is the fault of a close friend of mine, who is one of those secondary character fangirls, and one day got me into it. Don't ask.

And... the one I'm going to get burned at the stake for, ItaSasu. I'm one of those freaks who likes the psychological aspects of pairings... no, I don't expect Itachi and Sasuke to cuddle up to each other, tell each other how much they love each one another, and call each other "honey muffin", but... I'm one of those authors/fangirls who likes trying to get into the characters' minds... hence, I tend to like anything where it would have some psychological effect.

but i also like shikaxtem almost just as much. id be happy with either ^_^

i LOVE the whole tsunadexjiraiya cause i love tsunade, and even though he's like 50, jiraiya is teh smex XD

Semi-canon 'ships:

Lee x Sakura - nice guys should finish first

Orochimaru x Kabuto - because Kabuto is the only person in Orochimaru's life who isn't totally dominated by the sannin, therefore making for interesting dynamics

Shikamaru x Temari - they are the Asuma x Kurenai of the next generation, except cooler

Itachi x Kisame - because who the hell else would Itachi have a semi-non- f***ked up relationship with? Itachi x Sasuke has too many... issues

TsunaDan: It's pretty much the only canon pairing in the series. Plus they seemed really happy together.
NaruHina: Actually, I don't really know why, I just think it's cute the way Hinata blushes over Naruto.
LeeSaku: Come ON, people! Rock Lee really likes Sakura. And Sakura seems to think he's a nice guy. But she's still not over Saucypants...
KakaAya: Because it's just cute. Kakashi and Ayane (the ramen shop girl) just strikes me as an adorable pairing. =P

Kakashi x Iruka
- because it's mature, and they're not kids. As a fic writer, I like exploring the nuances of their characters. Somehow, they fit. And it's not necessarily what you see in canon that counts. ;) On the contrary, it's what you don't see.

Neji x Sasuke
- Because I think it would be very interesting to mesh them together. Both coming from powerful families, both with bloodline limits, both very, very high maintainance and bristly in character. And the aesthetics, of course. ;) They're two of the prettiest characters in the series.

Itachi x Sasuke
- Because the hotness that results defies words.

Gaara x Naruto
- Because there is nothing like loving your mirror image. Because without hanging about each other excessively, they have come to know each other's trials. Because I love the contrast.
