So we all know why we already don't like the dub despite the fact that we've only got a few seconds worth.

But I actually didn't find it discouraging at all.

1. They KEPT the original names! And they kept the word Hokage and Jutsu! Which means that they are more likely going to try and keep other Japanese words like full name techniques and words like sensei.
- Sure I had problems with the pronunciation. But then again, we all can't be fluent in Japanese, right? It an accent, almost everyone has one. It's not like they've been taking Japanese for years or been watching the subs 100 episodes straight like some of us.

But they're trying. Props to them

2. Did anyone notice... BLOOD! AND KUNAI STICKING OUT OF IRUKA! It wasn't all cut out! Rejoice!

3. They kept the original "tension" background music. So, perhaps that means we can keep some of the old soundtrack too. Maybe I'm being too hopeful, especially since I don't think they'll keep the OP and ED (gaining rights to those songs are completely different from gaining rights of the actual show).

4. I *liked* Naruto's voice. Sure, I liked the other one much beter, but I'm not going to expect her to just learn English and start dubbing for Naruto in America. Of course it's going to be different. I'm just glad she did a decent job in the few seconds I saw her. She sounded like a confused twelve year old boy. Here's to hoping she can sound loud and obnoxious.

Iruka's was meh. And Mizuki's... we'll I didn't like at all. But hey, he only shows up one episode anyway.


So, not all is too bad in the distance. Right?

EDIT: HAKU IS A MALE IN THE DUB~!!!!! OK? GOOD!

If you notice in the commercial or was it the scans, that the sexy no jutsu was kept also, i think they just added more clouds. Also no bitchin when you see the failed sexy no jutsu of kohanomaru in a bathing suit cuz hes in one for the firs try.

Its not the voice that got me. im slightly ok for dub voices its how they act. Iruka totally sounded like he was reading off of a paper. American voice actors dont give feeling in wht they say

It's not fair to make generalizations. Granted there are voice actors who don't ever really feel "into it", but I can name quite a few that do a spectacular job at portraying feeling.

Well, maybe not in the anime dubbing buisness, but we have plenty of talented voice actors. Everyone in, let's say, Rugrats. I saw the behind the scenes special and my jaw dopped, they were fantastic.

I saw a few seconds of what it sounded like in Japanese and I had the same negative reaction that many Naruto fans had to the new voices. It's not exactly 'untalented' but many people don't like things that are different.

I even thought the acting was better than usual, actually... I was deathly afraid that rumor that was going around about Steve Blum playing Kakashi would turn out to be right, because to my ears the guy sounds exactly like that -- somebody just reading off the script :/ Quinton Flynn (Iruka's actor) is a veteran VA who's done a number of roles including Aladdin in the old TV series and Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2... he's not the best voice actor in the world, but personally I have yet to hear anything I thought he was terrible in.

(It sucks though because I hate Iruka and I'd much rather see Quinton on a character I liked. XP)

I wasn't afraid of that rumor. I think I'd accept Steve Blum as Kakashi because that guy is a genius in my book. He's really talented. But we ended up with Dave Wittenburg who did the Xenosaga series and Witch Hunter Robin and some others.

I don't think it was all that bad considering the limited amount of the preview...again to those that don't like it I suppose they can download the episodes that are STILL AVAILABLE...and watch those...I however look forward to watching this...

It seemed ok and they kept the music. Hopefully that means they will keep Gaaras theme too. Though I wonder if they're ready to realise kids aren't kids anymore. It isn't the 60's. Even kiddies like some more adult stuff nowadays so I hope they dont cut huge chunks of Gaara speech and actions like in that hallway on his way to fight Sasuke.

We have to move on and realize that Takeuchi Junko's not going to learn English and be Naruto's American voice actor. Maile Flanagan has a hard role to do, especially because of the large contribution that Junko-san made to define Naruto's character. I think that it's best to view the dub completely independent of the original. Yes, it'll be different, but that can't be helped.

I agree to an extent. It's okay to groan over it...but do it in your own journals and quit bringing it to chuunin. If you think you're the only one upset, you're not. And nothing you have to say is new.

I agree, I was rather impressed with what I heard of Maille's Naruto job. I agree that the other two were staggered (Iruka said "Mizuki" like, 4 different ways O.o), but I can easily live with them. I can't wait to hear everyone :)

Here's the thing about pronunciations, accents, and dub voice actors: It is they're job to say words. That is to say, it is these people's jobs to pronounce words. So letting them get off saying things incorrectly simply because they're not native speakers is like letting a cop off for not pursuing your purse snatcher because his feet hurt.

Dealing with many foreign kids I would have to say that pronouncation is very difficult. You need experience along with time, something that dubbers do not have. English is very different to asian cultures, especially with merging vowels and special emphasis on certain ones.

Mostly, they say the words a lot slower than the Japanese and that's perfectly acceptable. Anyone that learns a language knows that when they are first learning to speak they words are a lot slower along with their sentences. It's just easier that way. Plus it is only the first episode.

From what I remember of dubbing, you are given one episode, take it home, practice, and then at the station you actually do the voice overs to the screen. They aren't given it four months in advanced and they don't watch 100 episodes in one go like some of us. Nor are they given foreign language teachers to help them.

Besides, it's the first episode, they have the potential to get better.

They ARE trying simply by saying the words. Saying that they are wrong for not being able to pronounce correctly is like blaming the rookie police officer for not catching the purse snatcher because he didn't know the city as well as the robber.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying allowing them to be complacent with incorrect pronunciations is comparable to having no qualm with the cop sitting on the bench while the purse snatcher strolls by.

All of that is just ridiculous. I know I'm probably coming off as an elitist or what not, but here me out. If you are a voice actor in any respect, speaking is your way of life. If you're unfamiliar with a certain area when it is presented to you, you should have the interest and opportunity to learn to do it in the best possible manner. This is not a new concept. Method actors do it. Even crappy actors do research for roles and try to approximate good accents. Not doing it because it was just given to you for a new project (and you're right, things get better with time and the first episode is not always the best indicator) is just being lazy in one's chosen trade. That's something that I generally don't like in any situation. If you're going to do something, don't do it half-assed.

Yeah, I admitted as much. And I'm blowing it out of proportion because I like to debate my points. The basic outline of this one is simply, I like people to do a good job and make actual attempts at their job, especially if it's their chosen profession.

I don't think the voice actors are lazy if they can't pronounce every word "to my liking." I think they're lazy if they do not attempt to pronounce it like... well, like the original word is pronounced. And I don't agree with what others have said about it's just different because it's English.

At the end of the day, you (and a lot of other people) are still bothered that the words aren't pronounced the way you'd like to hear them. Your new wrinkle on this old complaint is that you think some VAs aren't trying hard enough.

Personally, I wonder how you judge whether or not they're attempting to pronounce it correctly -- even if it comes out wrong, that doesn't necessarily mean they didn't try -- I have about nine years of Japanese study under my belt and I still get tongue-tied when speaking it once in a while. Pronouncing a foreign language, especially if it's one you haven't ever studied, is an inherently difficult proposition for many people, and your average anime dub doesn't have the budget to hire a voice coach to teach people how to say unfamiliar names.

Personally, I'm just impressed that they made sure no one was saying NaROOto.

I studied Japanese for six years. Hell, I am Japanese, and I still bork up the words now and then (for some reason, "Jiraiya" is very hard for me to say without sounding like a ditzy callgirl). And I bork up English as well, even though it's my only real first language.

I think my point is becoming unclear. Honestly, I do think you can generally tell if someone is making an effort to pronounce things properly... and again I stress this point... especially if they're profession is the manipulation of their voice. But, if someone were to give me some credible evidence that the voice actors were attempting or even interested in trying to get it "right", then I'd be perfectlly satiated. But the fact is I've heard too many animes where the English voice actors are literally just phoning it in.

The only ones who ever talked about name changes were fans who were just speculating with absoulutely no evidence that it would ever happen. And it was said some time ago that most of the music would be kept. Some of it getting the cut likely due to high licencing fees.

So the people who put the dub together actually did a good job, remained faithful to the original and whatever problems there might be at the start will likely get cleared up over time. Which is pretty much what I figured would happen from the start. Because the majority of people involved in dubbing these days *actually know how to do their jobs*.

Well, considering how I didn't like any of the voices in the subs until ep 10, I feel I'll pretty much have the same impression for the dubs. I pretty much reacted the same way that I did with the Japanese version ("Iruka sounds way too deep", "Naruto too preppy", yak, yak). As long as they don't spontaneously give Sasuke a horrible British accent, I'm sure it'll work out fine.
