A thought occured to me the other day while watching the Naruto dub. Besides a few pronunciations that they decided to change, like Uchiha, I've found that the dub doesn't really tick me off all that much. So, I though for a second and I wondered about something. Maybe it's not so much the voices that sound weird to people, but possibly the fact that people are now listening to things in English? Sure, the voices could be the original ones, but I still think it would sound strange if the original voice actors spoke in English. Now, this isn't to say that this is the only reason why some people don't like the dub, but it could be a factor? Just a thought that occured to me. I personally don't have any complaints. All I have to say is that at least they didn't do to Naruto what they did to Cardcaptor Sakura. Now THAT was sheer cruelty. :)

I think no matter what dub you watch, if you saw the sub first, you aren't going to like the dub version(or you won't like it as much as the sub, atleast).

Exactly. People have a natural bias if they watch the sub first.

I like the dub, and the sub is my first.

Hey, waitaminute, I love the dub, but I've been watching the sub for almost a year now. o.o

I actually saw Fullmetal Alchemist subbed first and while I absolutely love Toru Okhawa, I do tend to like the dub better.

I won't deny that I'm a bit biased but I do generally tend to really enjoy dubs and for me I find a lot more pleasure in the FMA dubs than the subs.

I don't seriously have a problem with the voices, but the no blood stuff kinda makes me mad. Other then that, I've seen enough dubbed to seriously freak out over Naruto (though Naruto's voice is annoying...like Tea's from Yu-Gi-Oh!).

People are just being elitist purists. It makes me sad. It's a decent dub, everyone's just pissed about it because it's not the sub.

They're being elitist purists? You're the one making a blanket statement about a wide variety of people based on your own bias. People like or dislike the dub for a variety of different reasons, please stop being so narrow minded and give others a little bit of credit. Cripes.

I've seen all of Naruto subbed, And really enjoy the dub.

I think when you watch a show that 150+ episodes long you get used to those voices and when it's done in another language your kinda like WTF. But it all takes some getting used to.

*shrugs* I just like to watch things in the language they were intended to be watched in. That goes for anime, French movies, Italian operas or whatever else you can think of, I'd like to stay as close to the original format as is plausible (obviously they weren’t intended to have subtitles stuck on the bottom but...you know).

I'm not keen on most of the voice actors I've heard so far in Naruto (I'm episodes behind as YTV is lagging behind Cartoon Network) but that's not really just because I don't like dubs, I just think a lot of them were poor casting choices. Some dubs ARE cast well (like Escaflowne, Gundam Wing, Lodoss Wars, etc...) and some are just annoying (One Piece, Saiyuki, etc....

Your theory is a good one though, and it might depend on which you watch first if you like the dub or not. For example I do like the casting (the casting, not the editing!!!) of Escaflowne and I saw the dub first, and I'm also fond of many of dub voices from Sailor Moon. However there are anime like Slayers where I saw the dub first and yet still prefer the sub. I guess it depends on the person.

Sorry to comment about this here, but I really must differ with the statement:

Some dubs ARE cast well (like Escaflowne...

I watched the dub first too, but I believe that the dub of Escaflowne is, for the most part, not well-cast. Some of the voice actors are miscast to the point that the characters seem older or younger than their actual ages. Also, a couple of the voice actors rarely delivered their lines well. A prime example of this is Millerna, who sounded too old and mature for a naive, lovelorn princess, and whose dialogue had badly delivered lines all over the place.

Again, sorry to rant about this here, and I don't mean to start an argument. I just felt that my opinion needed to be stated. ^_^;

Well, I agree some of the voices weren't great, like Dilandau and Millerna, but I think that others like Van, Allen, and especially Folken and Dryden (who I actually think were BETTER than their japanese counterparts) made up for some of the poorer choices. Basically what I'm saying is that, in my humble opinion, on average the dub voices were cast well. It's all subjective though, I can certainly understand why you'd disagree.
