For my Speech Class...I am doing a Persuasive speech on Watching Subs instead of Dubs...

I have to have "Information" and "facts" and "work citied pages" and all sorta of CRAZY things! And so..I figured I would ask you guys which one you prefer, and why. Also tell me which dubs are good and which ones just stink like whoa.

By Answering this...You give me, Courtney Adler, permission to use your responses in my Speech class tomorrow night (Yeah...I am procrastinating...)

Basically, one of my rules of thumb are, if the series should be in english in the first place, the dubs seem to work better. There are always exceptions, though.

You know what else is hilarious? Anime that people go: "OMFG you WATCH those?" have the best dubs too. (In my opinion.) Like DBZ and Digimon.

I'll agree... which ever one I see first, I associate the voices with the characters, and build a mental image of the character with the shadings of personality given by the voice. If I see the other version after that, it seems jarring because it's a slightly different construction of the character and the subtle differences are disconcerting, leaving me distracted from actually engaging with whatever it is.

I love watching anime on tv that I've seen on the computer. I don't know...it makes me happy. Believe it or not I like the one piece and shaman king dubs. And if Bleach gets dub I'll love it no matter what :DDD

I picked both, I show I enjoy is a show I enjoy no matter what. Honestly I'd rather watch something dubbed but if that's not possible (because something isn't dubbed or if the sub is so god awful I can't listen to it) I can enjoy watching it subbed just as much. The best thing would be to be able to understand Japanese :/

My favorite dubs right now are: Scrapped Princess, Cowboy Bebop, Fruits Basket, Naruto (really I love it!) and lots more I just can't think of...
The worst dubs are anything by 4Kids and Nelvana (Cardcaptors awful!) Really I don't even think they deserve to be called dubs, more like hack jobs.

I prefer the subs, because either subs or dubs could have a poor translation, but at least with subs, the original voices are still there, so even if you don't understand, you can hear the dynamics in their speech and such.

The subs because I really like the original Japanese voices and it gives me a chance to practice my listening Japanese, and the dubs for when there's a lot of action and I don't want to be dividing my attention between reading and watching.

I find subs to be highly more preferable when a dub elects to edit actual content apart from dubbing the voices. Some things such as swearing are alright, but when it gets to the point where they are cutting scenes and outrageously changing the dialogue, such as in Yugioh, it just becomes intolerable.

Still, some dubs are very good such as those mentioned in previous posts like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. Overall though, I find I enjoy subtitles and the original Japanese language just because it's more fun, not necessarily better in all cases (with the threat of horrible grammatic/spelling subtitle errors).

I prefer the RAWs but since it's not up there I voted subs. And while I do prefer subs to dubs, the subbers aren't infallible and I have seen mistakes in translations before. That's just one reason why, in some cases, I would prefer a dub over anything else. Even some of the manga scanlations have errors so I sometimes prefer just to leave it to professionals who will, hopefully, stick as close to the original storyline as possible. Course, I lived in Taiwan up til now so I know nothing about American dubbers and their accuracy so I guess my comment is moot. ^^;;

I perfer subs. Plain and simple. Of course if I do catch a good dub (like Naruto, yes I like it! And Hellsing...) I will watch it.

I prefer subs to anything else. I have a lot of problems watching dubs that change the names of the characters (a huge peeve of mine) and cut out/water down certain scenes (Yuugiou, I'm looking in your direction). I think a dub should stay as close to the original as possible. This may just be a personal quirk, but I don't adapt to change very well, so if I've seen raw or subbed versions of a program prior to viewing the dub, it just doesn't seem right. Likewise, I have the same problem if I've seen the dub before the raw.

I haven't seen that many dubs, so I don't have much input there. I like the FMA and Inuyasha dubs (I have not seen any raws or subs of the latter), the Naruto dubs are kinda eh (though I think it's because I just don't care for the voice actors), and reading the list of the name changes for Yuugiou GX scared me so much I refuse to watch it.

Well I prefer sticking with manga, as it's much more of 'your own pace' and more portable as well, but for the sake of your project here's my Sub vs Dub opinion.

The best way I can think of is to use an example for this. Basically I saw some choice episodes of the Subbed Inu-Yasha. None of the voices grated on my nerves, the subbers just won't to translate it right for the most part, and I read fast in any case so I was fine. Then there's the dub. I saw that first I believe, and didn't have anything against it at all, a few voices didn't sound right, but that was it. When I get the movies I watch it dubbed first, to concentrate on the story and such, then, because it's likely the voices may annoy me in some way, I'll watch the subbed version. Official subs can be just as bad the dubs, because you can hear where they changed things. Changing a 'nickname' of sorts that a character calls someone, into the person's name, or just rewording the sentence to exclude words. I know practically no Japanese so when I can notice things, it's annoying.

I don't really have a preference, there's a time for each of them.

Mangawise though, I'll just say that I really prefer the fan-translated. No chance of 'flopping' and they don't murder attack names. And, I'll be quiet now...

I like both dubs and subs. A lot of people, including myself, start out watching dubbed anime and that's how they grow to like a series and get more interested in anime. I like to watch both, usually the sub first and then the dub. I understand some Japanese so I watch it and listen to what they're saying and when I don't understand something, use the subtitles to help me. Plus I watch dubs with some of my friends who are slow readers and aren't up to following subtitles.

In my opinion some of the downsides to dubs in general are: the editting (cutting scenes, etc.), non-matching lip-synch (when the voices and the mouth movements don't match), completely changing the translation , and giving characters accents.
For example; I can not stand the Love Hina dub because of Kitsune's "southern accent". For a series that specifically takes place in Japan (the main characters are trying to get into Tokyo University) a character with a southern U.S. accent is completely out of place. Also, being a southerner myself, it makes me cringe because I have never heard anyone speak like that. Ever.

The Pilot Canidate dub's lip-synch was horrible, but I still watched and liked it anyway. Like with my favorite series ever, Kyou Kara Maou, they changed one of the ongoing jokes in the series making fun of the main character's name. In Japanese the joke is 'Shibya Yuuri Harajuku Furi', (Shibuya advantage Harajuku disadvantage, referring to the respective places in Japan) while in English they changed it to something about urine. It's things like these that bother me about dubs, but I generally like dubs anyway.

Technically, that often happens in both dubs and subs. A good example of this is the Fushigi Yuugi sub. There were times when the mouth flap continued nearly two seconds after the dialogue ended.

I've always loved dubs, plain 'n simple. Most of them ARE bad, mind you, but I really prefer seeing it than reading it. Though, I guess it really depends on which anime. FOR INSTANCE:

DBZ - WHOA AWESOME in English. I don't care what anyone says, the music made it more exciting, and I liked that Goku had a MASCULINE voice :D

Naruto though--I like both. I like the English 'cause it's in English :D And, besides what people think, I happen to like most of the voices. But of course, I appreciate the complete and total secks of the Japanese version 'cause whoa <3 THE END :D

Usually subs, but there are times in which I favor the dub. Depends on the quality of both, really.

Interesting tidbit: Some Japanese fans of Spirited Away prefer the dubbed voice of Chihiro to the original Japanese voice. A lot of Japanese fans agree that the performance of the Japanese voice actress was bland.

I agree with most---I prefer subs to dubs, but there are some dubs that I do not mind watching. Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun were two of those..and I am finding myself not minding the Naruto dub much either. The reason I really don't like dubs is the experience I've had with ones such as Yu-Gi-Oh, where they change literally everything, and the voices just don't match the characters at all. And, they censor/change stupid things (like making a yen on a card into a silver dollar...and pretending that a series that blatanly happens in Japan happens in America...) Subs just keep it closer to the original Japanese, and I like that.

Haha! I think I accidently voted "Dubs" instead of Subs. But you know what? I think I like them both pretty equally, so far. Since the dub is sticking almost, if not exactly, to the story line, then it's actually preferable in English, just so you don't have to read subtitles.

HOWEVER! That doesn't mean ALL dubs are that great. For the most part, I like subs. Of course, everyone knows of the butchering of One Piece. Yu-Gi-Oh also would have been better with a bit less editing. No 10 year old or younger kid is going to UNDERSTAND the meaning behind "Necrophilia" or whatever that card was, and anyone older would kinda get exactly the same reaction with the dubbed "Necrofear".

Plus, it's really irritating how they almost never say the words "Dead", "Killed", "Murder", ect. The same influence is on plenty of other shows, even in other cartoons. There is no way to tame naturally violent shows, so don't bother buying the rights if you can't stick to the story.

A good dub (I know I'm jumping around here...) is YuYu Hakusho. But that's only my opinion. I've never seen the sub, and I'm not too far in the Manga, scanalations being hard to come by. But from the dub I saw, the voices were good, characters kept their original names (Very Important!), and...um...well, there was probably some blood-editing and dialogue cutting, but even though there were a bit too many "Darns", the times they did say "Friggen" and "Crap!" were priceless. Ahahahah. Yeah. Good langauge makes a good dub. But for the most part stuff like that's only on Adult Swim, and Inuyasha pretty much has a one-word-dictionary when it comes to cursing, so it's boring in that case.

Did that paragraph even make sense? Ah, well. Hmmm. Many times a dub becomes annoying when the dubbers feel the need to put conversation or a thought-monologue or something in during spaces that would have been quiet in the sub. I guess they feel American audiences' minds would wander. Which they probably would. Sigh.

Okay, I hoped that helped! I had fun ranting! Hah haha. I think I decided I was going to do that subject for the next research paper/thing I had to do. Hasn't come up yet, though. I did "Why Japanese Manga is better than American Comics" for my Junior Exit Project, though. Hmmm. I understand your situation. Though...Day before! For shame! You should leave a day and a half, at least!

While I adore subs in English that I can easily follow and understand, I tend to prefer subs in Chinese because well...they're cheaper/easier to get for me.

I usually hate dubs because the voice actors either sound like they're not taking the material seriously. Subs are great because it's not hard to read a few lines and watch at the same time so long as you are able to read properly.

Subs. Almost exclusively subs. No matter how good a dub is I feel it often lacks the charm of original Japanese. As I've often said, I like to watch things in the language they were intended to be watched in whenever plausible. I'm not one of those people who dumps all over North American voice actors, there are some amazing ones out there I like as much as Japanese Seiyuu, they just tend to work on North American cartoons rather than for dubbing companies ^^()

That's not to say there aren't good dubs, there are some great ones, or that dubs are inherently worse than subs, but subs are just my personal preference.
