i haven't rewatched the naruto episodes in a long time but i have seen the dubs on tv.. so i was just wondering if somebody in the know could tell me.

Does naruto always say "Believe IT!" i don't seem to remember him saying that every 5 minutes.. but then again i could have missed it while reading subbtitles, possibley..

"Believe it!" is taking the place of "dattebayo!" Not a tranlsation, but a substitution.

Yeah, Naruto says dattebayo a lot. It's more of a form of verb conjugation I think, I'm not exactly sure how it fits into the Japanese sentance structure... (masuttebayo?) Someone else can maybe lend some help there.
Also, you know, kind of how the mist guy always said super this and super that, it's another dialectical variation (similar to dattebayo) that doesn't translate very well. (I wouldn't be surprised if Deidara's 'hmm' is like that too, but I haven't read the raw scans so I don't know)
I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong) that dattebayo is kind of a gruff speak, like you're talking yourself up. For example if he says nandattebayo (nani/nan as in what) it means more like "what the hell?" If that's the case, than replacing it with 'believe it' definitely leaves something lost in translation... (ie Naruto trying to act like a bad ass even though he's weak in the beginning?) But as is the woes of all dubs...

It was a near-catchphrase in the original.. there is no REASON for the weird speech pattern, other than that it's anime... =_= which is.. kind of annoying? well, I'm not annoyed, but it could be potentially as annoying.

A catch phrase is the best you're going to get in terms of translation how Naruto talks.

Though it certainly sounds like a catchphrase, I wouldn't actually label "Believe it!" as such...

It's certainly even close to being as bad as "Gotta catch 'em all!" (marketing ploy), "It's time to d-d-d-d-d-d-duel!" (terrible opening sequence), or the infamous "Expect the unexpected!!!" (ugh.. cardcaptors T_T)

I certainly find "believe it" to be acceptable. But I have no idea where they came up with it... it seems like they pulled it out of their asses.. haha :D well, whatever

You only think that because the speech pattern is in Japanese, so you don't notice it. How would you like it if Naruto ended half of his sentences with "y'know wh'I'm sayin'?!", and others with "y'know?" or "that's what I'm sayin', y'know?" Yeah, you'd love that, wouldn't you?

Anything gets tiresome after a while, not matter what the words.

Unless the word is "Sauce-gay". That'll never be not funny.

I don't know. Dattebayo is also sort of like a catch phrase. I mean. Inari seemed to pick it up after awhile. The fact is, dattebayo is nearly untranslatable but one of the things that makes Naruto "Naruto". I think adding "Believe it" is a better way of dealing with the translation issues rather than ignoring it all together.

*nods* That's what my informal Japanese instructor (meaning my fluent friend >_>;;) tells me. "Believe it!" is as close a translation as you can come up with, I think, even though it still isn't very good...

(Deidara's "hmmm" or "yeah" is un in Japanese. The way I've seen this tiny little word used, it could be a sound indicating agreement. Ehh, Deidara just talks that way. XD)

I see, good to know... Maybe I'll have to actually get off my lazy ass and try to read the raw scans before I pretend like I know anything... =) But then again there's kanji, and I suck at kanji... Too bad Kishimoto-san doesn't include the hiragana underneath the characters, then I could like... learn or something. It's not exactly something I can look up. Oh well... I suckttebayo... =)

I know a total of... let's see, like 15 kanji characters! Including the numbers 1-10! DX Usually kanji is supplemented by kana (because not everyone knows that much kanji, even in Japan), but some raw scans are too small or low quality for me to read them! T,T

The hiragana is usually to the side of the kanji in the raws. It might be impossible to read, however, depending on the quality of the scans.

I'm willing to bet that dattebayo bugs people in Japan about as much as BELIEVE IT!! bugs us. They're both unnessicary and... there.

As far as I know, his datte bayo would be even MORE annoying in japanese because it doesn't actually mean anything (as far as I know). Having the "Believe it" in the dub made me happy, 'cause that means they actually picked up on that little thing being something big about his character.

from what we see, he also writes it out in messages. (dattebayo, I mean) like he carved kanji for Chouji in a message when Chouji was left behind - ''come back soon, 'tebayo'' or something close to that. XD So it's not only speech pattern but also a writting pattern?
