So the controversy is over: Sai cannot possibly be Sasuke :D! Since Sai had the recommendation of that weird old man whose name starts with a D and cannot be bothered to be remembered, and was supposedly part of the ANBU roots, which must have been before Sasuke's time, he couldn't be Sasuke. However, I do think he's an evil little twerp who was hired by the mysterious old man to do something nasty to Naruto. He sort of radiates an aura of "I'm just trying to be friendly *STABSTABSTAB*."

I agree with all of that except he really wasn't trying to be friendly at all. XD. His insults to his new 'team' weren't exactly welcoming. lol. Remind you of anyone much? haha.

But I NEVER thought Sai was Sasuke. I just think Kishimoto is being really weird making Sai a VERY Sasuke-like character. It annoys me actually, but what can ya do? lol

But I do feel, with his excessive smiling and chipper attitude when he insults people that it's like his own way of making friends. Like how Sasuke calls Naruto almost endearingly at this point or something. Like: Omg, I don't know how to make friends so I guess I'll...SMILE. YES! People like smiling! But look at Sasuke! So many people liked him when he was all assholish and stuff...so I'll make really rude comments! YES!

It's like he's trying to gain their trust by being like Sasuke and a normal person at the same time XD Except it's not working >_<''

In all seriousness, I totally agree with that. I don't think Sai was raised in a normal environment, which explains his lack of social skills, weird outfit choices, and sickly skin tone. He just smiles because he thinks that's what normal people do. I mean, seriously, if he could express anything else, he wouldn't have the same exact expression on his face for a full 2 chapters.

oh btw, if he is older, then isn't he supposed to have known Naruto and the others? i remember that was what made me think he was of the younger generation, he seems oblivious of Naruto and co.'s existence and reputation.

Well that's the same either for the younger or older though. I mean how many freshmen would you guys know of if you were a senior? Also, since he's part of the ANBU and the ANBU roots, which was created when the Third was still alive, he must be substantially older than the rest of the lot. Also the Sasuke affair wasn't an ANBU mission since mostly genin were sent after him, so most ANBU were probably too wrapped up in their missions to care. All in all, it seems that Sai is older than the Rookie Nines, or, if he had known of them, it was just in passing mission reports or gossip, and probably not given a lot of interest especially since Naruto has been gone for 2.5 years.

Well, I think Danzou says he's a similiar age to Naruto. Could mean a little older or a little younger. If Sai was part of this organisation, and he's around Naruto's age (16 now) and 'Root' was in exsistance during the reign of the third (now 4 years ago), Sai could well still have been a part of it, but that would put him at an Itachi/Kakashi level of skill. He might possibly have already been a graduate of the Academy when Naruto and his friends were just about genin.

i was just about to respond with the Chuunin exams which were pretty much seemed like a big event at the time. consider too the ANBU assigned to overlook the event. but then it might have been likely that he was on a mission somewhere else, no?

Well, Sai wasn't an Anbu though, but part of this 'Root' organistaion, which seems to have been like a subdivision of the main Anbu; however, it's an odd one - if the Anbu are the Hokage's department, and Danzou, their founder, was opposed to the hokage, that's an odd little group. So, it may have been that Root had nothing to do with the chuunin exams, which were after all, called by the Hokage.

(plus by the time the last part of the exam started, a lot of Anbu seemed to actually be from Sound...lol! One wonders about Root and Danzou and Orochimaru, if Danzou was a political opponant of the Third (and presumably his protegee the Fourth...)

Though I am still deciding what I think about this, I am not yet sure that Danzou wants to do anything 'nasty' to Naruto per se...I think that at least at the moment, his immediate goal is to keep this jinchuuriki intact, complete with youma.

However, Tsunade did say something about him being a hawk? As opposed to a dove, like, an aggressor? Is it maybe possible that Danzou's interest in the jinchuuriki is as a weapon of Konoha, like Shukaku was a weapon of Suna, and that he *really* doesn't want to see it lost to those fine gentlemen in Akatsuki?

After all, all things considered, how many people in Konoha, in the scale of things, really give a shit about Naruto the person. His own circle do, sure, but they only represent a fraction of the population of Konoha. Widely, Naruto was always hated and loathed and no one cared much about him as a person - is there any evidence that's really changed? I think the elders concern generally is all about the kyuubi and the position and safety of Konoha.

As for Sai, presumably he agrees with whatever the goals of Root are, or at least is happy to accept them as part of his job. But I think this seems to be a job for him. And remember, sai isn't even his real name. Clearly, he's a bit eccentric, bless him. ^^ But he sure does have a way with words. lol!

I think that at this point there are many ways that Danzou could go. Since he was very much against the Third's position and established a subdivision of the ANBU that was disapproved of by the Third, then it sounds sort of like they want to overtake Konoha, at least from Tsudane. I guess what he means by being a hawk is being in favour of the Ninja Wars, so maybe he wants to create general havoc between the countries and eventually have Konoha come ontop as number one after the other countries have significantly weakened themselves. In that sense, the Root divison sounds sort of like an arms build-up, or an experimental group to help develop a 'secret weapon' for Konoha. In that sense, sai might be an experimental student or byproduct of certain experiments.

In addition, Danzou did feel threatened by Kyuubi's possible usage against Konoha by enemies so maybe he wants to simply eliminate Naruto to prevent this problem altogether while also showing off the strength of Sai or using the Kyuubi for Konoha's arms research?

I agree with that. In episode 281 Sai says about his smile, "...it is not completed...to enter a person's heart you must first have a smiling face. It was in the study guide."

That alone makes me think sai is an experiment of some sort, and the root division a Konoha 'area 51.' I also agree that if Sai's mission is to infiltrate team 7, it's probably for the purpose of harnessing Kyuubi's power.

I don't know how Itachi would write it, but currently I have it that Sai got the following in his(pretty much confirmed now, -_-) head:

1. People are afraid of the quiet ones, so start conversations by laughing at their manhood. People love talking about sex and enjoy lewd jokes.

3. Wear skimy clothes because apparently, even the Hokage is defeated by sex appeal.
