The Calender Project -- A Reminder Post
Nov. 19th, 2005 01:39 pmLast weekend I posted a Naruto Birthday List and suggested that some members of the
This post is here to discuss the specifics of the "Calender Project". If you are one of the fan-artists who volunteered, please read under the lj-cut (and leave a comment, too)!
Brief outline:
I. Months claimed by Artists
II. Content of the fan-art
III. Birthdays included in Calender
IV. Deadline for the project
V. Format of the calender
VI. Distribution
I. Months claimed by Artists
So far, total of 12 artists have volunteered (excluding myself). Thanks to you all! Now everyone has claimed or been assigned a month. Since we have enough artists now, I won't take a month.
jiah January - completed. Thank you!
firemasterskye February - completed. Thank you!
scorpionocean March
akusai April
dragonboy_mt May
thomasvye June
seishun July - completed. Thank you!
reitsu August - completed. Thank you!
cest_jolie September
nicole_dyria October
theflyingace November - completed. Thank you!
minawashu December - completed. Thank you!
II. Content of the fan-art
Because
chuunin is not an age-restricted community, and because some people will be displaying this calender at work, I'll have to insist that the content of the fan-art will have to be PG-13 and 100% work-safe. Other than that, you are at complete liberty as long as it's a Naruto fan-art. You can draw Orochimaru playing drums with lollipops if you want to.
Would you like to include your signature in your fan-art?
III. Birthdays included in Calender
It has been suggested that every character's birthday should be included in the calender, no matter how minor that character he/she/it is. I think that's a good idea. Does everyone agree with me?
Also, I thought that it'd be nice to include Masashi Kishimoto-sensei's birthday (Nov.8), too. Yay/Nay on this?
IV. Deadline for the project
Obviously, the calender will have to be available for distribution before the New year's day.Is there a good deadline date that we can agree on?
akusai suggests December 15. I'm going to set a loose deadline between December 10th and 20th. I know that final exams will be coming up around that time; each artist should decide on a personal "deadline" within that timeframe that will work with his/her schedule.
When your fan-art is done, you can either leave a comment in my journal with a link to your work, or you can send it to my e-mail (found in my userinfo).
V. Format of the calender
Okay, I've thought about this one all week. All week. I've arrived at the conclusion that the calender will look neater and more uniform as a whole if one person -- in this case, me -- managed the calender format, rather than leaving the entire page for the month to individual artists. If you think otherwise and you need to bonk my head with a bottle, please do so.
This is the basic format for the calender I've thought of. (Don't worry about all the orange for now. The final product will have white background and will have black grid lines to go easy on printer ink. ^_^)
This is based on "US letter" paper, which is slightly shorted and wider than A4 paper. The grey area is meant to be margin, and left&right margin is wider than top&bottom margin so A4 users won't have trouble with printing the calender.
The big orange area on the top, as you can see, is where your wonderful fan-art will go. Your fan-art will need to be big enough to fit into that slot without getting badly warped and losing too much resolution. it is 7 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall.
OPTIONAL: Also take note that, in each and every month, there will be lots of blank spaces left! See Here. [EDIT: Link has been fixed.] I'm talking about the blank spaces before and after each month; for example, January has no extra space in the beginning, but it has 11 extra spaces in the end. Each space is 1 inch wide and 0.75 inch tall. If you want to draw something to fill in that extra space, you're more than welcome.
VI. Distribution
Finally, regarding the distribution, I'm thinking that if everyone e-mails the fan-art to me on time, I can edit it onto the calender form, and either host it on photobucket.com, or I can store it as a zip file and personally e-mail it to everyone who requests it.
I really hope I didn't bore you out with all the details! I tried very hard. >_<
Please check back to this post often through this weekend to read what fellow fan-artists have to say about this. Thank you!
[EDIT]
The finished calendar is here! I'm sorry not everyone could join us in this project, but Thanks to all who participated!

Date: 2005-11-20 01:53 am (UTC)Yes, some people will be having final exams around that time...
How about this: I set a loose deadline between December 10th and 20th, and each artist can personally "adjust" the deadline to his/her own liking.

Date: 2005-11-20 01:28 am (UTC)Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience. I've settled on August. I hope some of the girls in bathing suits fits the rating. :x
Definite yes to including Kishimoto's birthday and possibly even Toshiro Masuda's since he's the uber composer of all the Naruto music? Although I don't know his birthday as of now so I guess I'm not much help. :x

Date: 2005-11-20 01:57 am (UTC)I will trust that you will work with girls in bathing suits and not titter-totter over the boundaires of PG-13 and Work-Safe.
Maybe I'll look into that Toshiro Masuda's birthday. Are you sure that's he is the ONLY composer of ALL the Naruto music? If there are composers other than him, that could be quite troublesome...

Date: 2005-11-20 08:18 pm (UTC)Depending on what everyone else plans on drawing, I might not end up doing a beach scene like a planned. I was wondering if maybe we could get an idea of the theme of everyone's pictures are going to be because having three beach pics would be kind of repetitive. :x
Or something. XD; If it puts pressure on the artists to make a decision or on you to get them to make a decision, then don't bother. Just a thought.
Uhm, Toshiro Masuda seems to have composed all of the OSTs except for the opening and ending themes. All of the discographies that I found on google listed his name for all the songs.

Date: 2005-11-20 11:39 pm (UTC)That's quite impressive! I will try to look into this to the best of my ability.
I think asking everyone for what they are going to be drawing might be too much for now; I don't think everyone has decided on a subject/theme yet. Plus, there's only about a month to work on the fan-art, and there's the Thanksgiving (usually meaning a family gathering and not much personal time) and the Final Exams ( = much stress) on the way.
That would have been a good idea if we weren't so pressed for time -- get together to discuss what each one wants to draw, change plans when there's two identical themes in a row, be flexible, etc. Maybe next year, if anybody's going to try to do a Calender Project for 2007. : )

Date: 2005-11-21 03:30 am (UTC)This page (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1825) displays a guy called Toshio Masuda as the Music guy for Naruto. I looked into that, and here (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=565) is what I found; Toshio Masuda, born 1959 October 28, worked on music for Naruto movie 1 & 2 and tv, and has hobbies of "cleaning, drying futon, and laundry". (lol)
The thing is, though, his name is spelled Toshio, not Toshiro. Is this the smae guy as the guy we're looking for? (And why would so many people misspell his name?) Thoughts, please?

Date: 2005-12-08 03:32 am (UTC)I looked up "Toshio" Masuda on google and it looks like he's a director of some sort. I think "Toshiro" Masuda is our man, but I don't see his birthday anywhere online. :x If this is getting to be too much of a pain, we could leave it out. T.T
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Date: 2005-12-08 01:53 pm (UTC)This is getting increasingly confusing whether "Toshio" is equal to "Toshiro". There are the tiems that I really wish I could read Japanese. T_T
I'm sorry, but I guesss this means Masuda (Toshiro? Toshio?) will be left out of the calender. It was a great idea, though!

Date: 2005-11-20 02:46 am (UTC)Also, can you accept Photoshop files? Or would another file format be preferable?
*goes back to work. Must finish basic sketches, scan, color, and then to the final composition!*

Date: 2005-11-20 11:27 pm (UTC)When you lay a regular printing paper (about 11 x 8.5 inches)horizontally, it's slightly off the 7 x 4.5 ratio. Take about 1 1/2 inch off the bottom so that it is slimmer (11 x 7 inches), and that'll be much closer to the ratio. The closer your drawing is to the ratio, the less stretching and/or editing will be done to make it fit.
And, as a side note, use a high quality setting when scanning. (Too sad to see all the details get lost!)
"wait till someone wonders where we *bought* that"

Date: 2005-11-21 04:16 pm (UTC)I'm glad that February works for you. You said you'd like a month with some holiday for a theme, and February (which, obviously, has the Saint Valentine's Day) happened to be the last one left.
Good luck on your fan-art, remainder of the semester, and the final exams! : )
