I was just going back through chapter 281 to reread Sai's entrance, and I found this:

"Yamato Works"....? Does Yamato have some connection with ROOTS? And if so, is that why he tried to convince Tsunade that Sai wasn't a threat? Any ideas?

...that doesn't stop it from being a ref, though, i suppose? maybe they hoped that readers would dismiss it as a fourth-wall gag and thus be surprised when yamato's true nature is revealed. :D the theory itself seems pretty sound.
