Dub thoughts...
Dec. 31st, 2005 10:00 pmI've been watching this "Naruto Years Marathon" on Cartoon Network basically all day (yes, I'm bored) and I've decided... Really, the dub isn't that bad. At all. Really!
I mean, yes, some of the voices are annoying (Naruto's will never grow on me, but I love Sasuke's!) but everything else is pretty much intact. To me, we even get the added bonus of having japanese words like "jutsu," "sensei," "kunoichi," and "kekkei genkai" being left in the show.
Really... think back to the earlier days of anime dubs. Sailor Moon and Pokemon, for example... in which every character's name had to be changed for the sake of "understanding." Usagi had to be Serena, and Satoshi had to be Ash. Come on, we'd be REALLY pissed off if Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura became Nathan, Steve, and Sally. And Kakashi would probably be Kevin or something. XD Oh, the horror.
Also, when compared to the dub of Dragonball Z, all our loveable ninja-violence is intact. I remember watching some of DBZ in Japanese and wondering "what show is this?" because entire fight scenes had been cut out. And Vegeta with the big bloodless hole in his stomach? Oi vey. Now, we're able to see blood on a character's body, just not "blood in motion." That doesn't have much to do with dubbing as it does with less arcane television rules, though.
We should jump for joy that we weren't plagued with a completely awful dub. ^^
Edit: The point of this post wasn't issues with voices, really... it was about how the show isn't hacked to pieces like older anime dubs. The voices are never going to sound great to us, people who have seen the japanese version XP

Date: 2006-01-01 03:26 am (UTC)Also, Haku's voice is really...I don't know what it is. It sounds like it's going to crack any second or like he has pneumonia.
I feel like that it should have been one of those series that should have been dubbed by people who weren't working for Cartoon Network. Most of the dubs on Adult Swim are pretty good so I really wish that they had dubbed the series instead...

Date: 2006-01-01 03:30 am (UTC)Adult Swim doesn't dub anime themselves either. And even though the management for AS is different, it is ultimately controlled by Cartoon Network.
My point wasn't the voices though, because they can NEVER feel right like the japanese voices. It was just that the show isn't a complete hack job.

Date: 2006-01-01 05:37 am (UTC)I'm fine with the others, though Naruto's did take a little getting used to. There is no doubt that the Japanese voice actors were better, but the American ones are at least tolerable.

Date: 2006-01-01 03:26 am (UTC)but yes, you're right. dubbing has come a long way. we've probably come to expect the worst and then look for it.

Date: 2006-01-01 03:41 am (UTC)I first watched the dubbed first, I liked it, no matter what. I liked everyone's voices except for Naruto's.(Of course.)
Then I finally get access at the subbed Naruto and I love the subbed more than the dubbed! I still watch the dubbed enough that I don't hate it like most people who can't even possibly give it a chance. I still keep in touch with the weekly new subbed eps of Naruto though. :)

Date: 2006-01-01 03:50 am (UTC)I think Maile does a very good job and today's episode is basically confirming that. I think she's done incredible with this current episode that is on. She really does have a good handle on Naruto and if you were with us the night we chatted with her, you'd see how she really thinks about the character and everything.
I'll give that I didn't follow the anime completely in Japanese. I don't have the harddrive space for it, honestly, though I do have the first one hundred and fifty episodes on DVD that I just haven't watched yet. I like the dub and I chose to hold out for the dub instead of trying to download it. And I'm glad I did. I wasn't at all disappointed.

Date: 2006-01-01 05:25 am (UTC)I think Naruto's english VA is doing a great job trying to mimic the original voice. I must say that they sound very similar. Heck, I'm happy with most of their voices. (:
Speaking of DBZ violence and such, there was a big thing about censorship back then. Unfortunately these days, censorship has toned down ALOT, including cartoons.

Date: 2006-01-01 05:37 am (UTC)I wish that the people who had dubbed the cowboy bebop movie had dubbed all other anime, so far that was the best dub I have ever seen, so far that is.

Date: 2006-01-01 05:41 am (UTC)They didn't try to translate "dattebayo" per se, "Believe it!" is just a silly catch phrase they threw into the show to give it a memorable hook. Its like "Gotta catch 'em all" for pokemon. They just wanted phrase XP

Date: 2006-01-01 05:38 am (UTC)I watched the first dubbed episode and like, died. And since then, I always turn off the TV right after InuYasha. (YTV in Canada XD) I've actually sort of erased the dubbed from my mind. I don't know that it exists. I've modified the memory, like that dude from HBP...can't remember his name. Yes, so in my mind, there is no dub and I live happily and frolick amongst the subbed. ^-^

Date: 2006-01-07 05:01 pm (UTC)OMFG, if that ever does happen, I swear I'll go nuts and start pelting the candy at their puny little heads "HERE! TAKE YOUR CANDY AND GO! JUST GO!" and I bet I'd do it too.
*shudder* That--that.. I never want that to happen O_O
But, you know, me dressing up as Shino to school on Halloween is a different thing, you see... because back then, none of the other Genin 9 had been shown on the dubbed so every little kid I heard whispering: "Naruto!" had no idea who I was. It was the forehead protector that gave me away. Well, I'm sure some of the people knew who I was. Anyway, yes..good point you make there. >_>;

Date: 2006-01-01 06:11 am (UTC)And about the voices, since I only saw one episode, it's not fair for me to judge. Still, after I was done rofl for about ten minutes the first time I saw it, I had to seriously reflect on the voice choices, and I was like...meh. It could've been worse, Sailor Moon, as you mentioned, changing the names and the like. Anyway, I love Sasuke's voice so far, and Ino's, too. XD
I'm starting to use that damn "Believe it!" @_@

Date: 2006-01-01 06:38 am (UTC)But you weren't talking about the voices were you? xD
Really, the editing isn't that bad. They kept a lot of japanese phrases in, mispronounced as they may be, and kept all the names the same. Sure, there is blood cut out of several scenes, but come on... it's not on Adult Swim. Overall, it's a hell of a sight better than some of the earlier dubs.
Does anyone remember what they called Kakashi's Chidori? It went in one ear and out the other.

Date: 2006-01-01 09:27 am (UTC)To me, the dub will never be as good as the original Japanese because that's what I'm used to, BUT -- I will love the dub for what it is and will continue to watch it when I can, and will welcome dubbie!newbs with open arms.
And really, as an old fart with more important things on her plate to worry about, I have better things to bitch about than the wrong inflection in dub voices, the cutting-out of "flowing blood", and other such things. xDD Love it or hate it, just don't hate the dubbies. A lot of us started out that way.
...For the record, I adore Maile's Naruto. ^^

Date: 2006-01-01 12:02 pm (UTC)I watched the sub first and always tend to prefer which ever version I see first, no matter what the show.
I have met a few of the voice actors for the show at cons and they are REALLY pouring there all into doing this show... so I give them props for that.Even if they have to edit a few spots of blood here and there for TV.... in July we will have unedited DVDs so I can live....
And for how much I dislike Sasuke.... Yuri is doing an AMAZING job at his voice and has made me a fan girl of him.... though still not the character *laughs*

Date: 2006-01-01 02:37 pm (UTC)When I heard that Naruto was coming to Toonami, I was pissed off -- I knew that the violence content would be very toned down since it wouldn't be on Adult Swim. Still, I was going to watch it no matter what. The first episode I thought was awful in comparison to the subbed ones, and several of my friends didn't stick with the show after that first episode. I kept on, though, because I knew that the series gets awesome, and I was right -- in the next two or three dubbed episodes, I was happily surprised and now look forward to 9:30 on Saturdays so I can watch it.
just my 2 cents
Date: 2006-01-01 03:33 pm (UTC)the dub does suck, i *hate* the fact that all the voices sound the same. their high pitched, squeaky.
they cut scenes out, because their american commie bastards. "ohemmgeee we cant show two boyz kissing on cartoon network !1oneone!1 and blood *GASP* we might get sued by every housewife who has nothing better to do"
*Agggh!!*
I can't compare though, I wouldn't watch the Dubs for pokemon/sailor moon. i preferred the subs. but the shows didn't appeal.
:D
Re: just my 2 cents
Date: 2006-01-01 06:08 pm (UTC)About the voices sounding squeaky, you have to admit it is not half as bad as it could be. Sakura, unlike most anime girls, has a fairly normal voice pitch, as opposed to a crazy-high one that sounds constantly on helium. Naruto's voice is that of a twelve year old boy. Sasuke, in my opinion, sounds decent.
To be fair, the kiss thing was pretty annoying, but as far as cutting bloodiness, not much was done with that.
Re: just my 2 cents
Date: 2006-01-01 07:45 pm (UTC)The kiss... was gone, yes... but really. That's the only major scene thats been taken out so far, as far as I can recall. I ship Naruto and Sasuke, but really... it didn't make me mad at all that it was gone. Its just a fun little scene. And in the episode where Sasuke "dies" the kiss clip wasn't removed there.
Granted, the voices aren't going to be like the japanese. Japanese and English are two very different languages, the sounds and inflections are going to be very different. These actors are doing their best job for American fans.

Haku's voice is done so well and the lines and.. So awesome. I watch to listen to Haku and Sasuke talk. For great justice.

Date: 2006-01-01 09:33 pm (UTC)I hate that they cut the kiss scene in episode 3 but it came back with a vengence in the background when Sasuke 'died' so HA! to you stupid homophobic dubbers! >>; I'm SasuNaru fan at times... SasuSaku at other and NaruSaku at others. Hehe. ^-^;;
Kakashi's voice irks me a bit and I hate that some of the blood splatters were taken out. I love that they keep some of the original Japanese. Wish they kept those honorifics though... 'My Sasuke'? *cringe*

Date: 2006-01-03 10:55 pm (UTC)Man, I love the dub and will defend it to my death! (Or close to that.) I think it was really well done and even prefer some of the voices to their Japanese ones.
