Gaara cosplay
Feb. 15th, 2006 09:45 pmHi there! I have come to you with a very special request.
A month from now, I'm going to a convention. And so, I decided to go as Gaara! Despite being female, tall, blonde and eyebrow-ed. XD But, see, I already have a Suna hitai-ate, and I love Gaara, and his first outfit is quite simple. So why not?
What I'm asking is for tips on how to make the costume work. I am especially looking for tips from people who have actually cosplayed Gaara before and therefore know what I'm going for. Specifically, I am mostly looking for a way to make the gourd and the gourd strap, and wondering how should I go through with the makeup, the love kanji and the hair. But really, any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

Date: 2006-02-15 07:57 pm (UTC)I didn't make one. I took a teddy bear instead. Because in the flashbacks Gaara has about his childhood, he was holding a teddy bear. And it was cute.
Then again...I didn't cosplay as Gaara, Gaara. I cosplayed as Sexy No Jutsuu Gaara. ^^
Meh...I hope this helps a little...maybe gives you an alternative to the gourd.

Date: 2006-02-15 08:41 pm (UTC)Mou, what con are you going to?

Date: 2006-02-15 09:32 pm (UTC)Oh, this con... it's a local con (I live in Israel), organized by a bunch of kids around my age. Very lame. Even so, 600 people from all around the country are going to come, and among them are a few of my friends, so not going is not an option.

Date: 2006-02-15 09:42 pm (UTC)Heh, I know how it is to be forced to go to a con. Currently I'm living in NC USA and I have to travel all the way to California for Yaoi con later this year simply because one of my friends won't take no for an answer. >.

Date: 2006-02-15 09:51 pm (UTC)In a way, getting dragged to a convention is a bit annoying. But then, it kind of makes me feel loved, too, since if your friends want you there, then it means they really like you. =)

Date: 2006-02-15 10:06 pm (UTC)And I know how you feel about cons. I'm going to a con in April and most likely the only panel I'll be going to is the one I'm helping to run. I go to cons for the friends and the awesome costumes, and to show off my own, of course :)
Heh, well, I'll post either in this topic or on your journal when I find something out from my Gaara, ne?

Date: 2006-02-15 09:34 pm (UTC)I'm having problems with the gourd. The kanji is also a bit of an issue, and I'm trying to find a way to make my eyebrows look like they're not there without shaving them. 'Cause shaved eyebrows = no fun.

Date: 2006-02-15 09:55 pm (UTC)I have LEE EYEBROWS~~~ XD *niceguy pose* Actually, not that bad. But yeah, I couldn't shave my eyebrows off since they're important for me to look.. normal LOL. So I used some theatrical eyebrow cover makeup. It's a wax that you mould over your eyebrows, and then you use a sealor to keep it there and you put makeup over it to match it to your skin. It worked perfectly, and I was dancing for over 4 hours in it and it didn't wear off!
I got it locally (Toronto, Canada) at a theatrical store. I don't know where you live or if there are stores that carry the same stuff near you but the website of the store I bought mine at is here: eye wax (http://store.malabar.net/product_info.php?cPath=1_2_25&products_id=2972), flexible sealor (http://store.malabar.net/product_info.php?cPath=1_2_25&products_id=2975)
As for the kanji, I just drew it on in a mirror with a red sharpie ^^;; Luckily I can write the kanji backwards.

Date: 2006-02-15 09:25 pm (UTC)We waxed her eyebrows and died and cut her hair. We chose to do the 15 year old version.

The gourd came out great, but it wasn't cheap. We used a large ball, inflated punching ball, plastic cup & plate, paper mache stips (newspaper), powdered paper mache, dark base coat, crackle and a top coat.
the harness was made with heavy vinyl with yards of cloth for the sash.
stuff I did
Date: 2006-02-15 10:32 pm (UTC)I bought the gourd bag and ninja shoes from ebay.
I bought a plain black tshirt and fishnet socks, chopped off the open end of the socks and sewed them the sleeves of the tshirt.
Pants we're just some of my black cargo pants that I scrunched up and wrapped the white strips of material around the bottom my my legs.
The back and front white sashes that hang down, we're pinned to my shirt, underneath where the round sash hangs. ^_^
