Just dropping a reminder that [livejournal.com profile] 20_truths, a compilation of essays detailing twenty random facts about Naruto characters/pairings/groups, is doing extremely well and currently accepting claims.

In the past three months, over eighty essays have been compiled, all of which are ridiculously good.

Oh wow. I think I'll check some of these out.

By the way, your icon is amazing. I think that's a Tenten pairing I support.

*looks at the first one* I don't get it, it's a numbered list, that's not an essay. Are these fictions?

ooookay so your facts, are actually fiction made up by the author. wow, that's some bad nomenclature right there. I was expecting, y'know, essays about facts of the characters, a character analysis, something. It's an interesting and unique way to create some fanfiction though.

I'm looking at it with a strict definition: a fact is true, fiction is not. I'm quite certain no professor in the world would consider a numbered list to be an essay. It's a specific format.
If I see something called 20_truths and everything inside it is not true about the character (because it is not canon) you're gonna make me a bit surprised. That's three examples of mis-named fanfiction.
It's not a character analysis because there's not really any analysis going on. It's telling a story on characters from the author's imagination. I looked at the KakaIru one, and it said "17. Iruka can't read. The words don't work for him." That's neither a fact, a truth, an analysis, or even plausable.

Oh come on now, don't tempt me to try to do a LeeTen [livejournal.com profile] 20_truths, I've already signed up for a bunch of other ones that I'm behind on D:

Besides I'm more into NejiTenLee anyway

Maybe I'll just work on that ficbunny where Lee and Tenten hook up and Tenten loves it at first but then Lee gets so TERRIFYINGLY ENTHUSIASTIC about being the best lover that he can possibly be that he starts EXHAUSTING her from sex.

Maybe it's just me, but does it seem like Tenten has the most personality when she's around Lee? ANYTHING FOR TENTEN GAINING SOME PERSONALITY, I MEAN SHE'S STARVING FOR IT T_T

I don't like most threesomes but Team Gai WORK so well together that being the sick freak I am I like to imagine they'd work as well in bed

Oh yeah, I don't actually mind NejiTen, I've just always felt like LeeTen was more fun. Also, spending her early teenage years having to keep up with Gai, Neji, and Lee in training is obviously perfect preparation for Tenten to keep up with Lee in bed.

Yeah I'm not too big on ROMANTIC NEJI myself, if he's not asexual he's probably birdsexual or something. GaixBig BirdxNeji all the way

I just love Sakura and Lee way too much as friends to ship them romantically, I think--Sakura is Lee's goddess and his goal and all that, and somehow it'd be kind of disappointing if he were to actually get her. Because Lee is like that. Tenten, on the other hand--it's sort of ambiguous as to whether they're really just friends ♥

And oh man I hadn't known she'd put Sakura as a "desired opponent." That is so freaking cute afdjskl MAYBE I HAVE TO WRITE ABOUT THAT.

Next time your teacher asks for an essay and you had him a list, tell me what grade you get, mkay?

Just cause you can't disprove something doesn't make it a fact.

Agreed. I first joined the community under the impression that it would be a compilation of fact-based essays, and was rather disappointed at, first, the format expected, and then at all the outrageous crack that broke out. I like crack as much as the next fangirl, but I think what came out on the community was too much, and not nearly what the advertisement suggested it would be. A good portion of those "facts" were AU or based on RPs (same thing in the end, usually).

The word "essay" is very misleading, and frustrating to someone who is actually looking for, you know, essays. :[

It's not silly to defend yourself, but when I first joined, it was off an ad that said there would be "essays." And yet there is not a single essay in that community. I also joined when it first opened, so there weren't any in-community examples to see what would be going down. I remember there was a link to someone else's 20 facts list for Harry Potter, which I found extremely confusing, because a list of 20 facts isn't, to any degree, an essay, which was what the community was supposedly for.

It was impossible to know what the community was about because you said there would be essays and there weren't. It's deliberately misleading. If you want to appeal to people who want the sort of thing your community is doing, then please, call it a "list of 20 facts" and not an "essay."

I would like to see where a numbered list is considered an essay, and who considers it an essay. It's true that essays can come in various forms, even non-literary forms, but that does not necessarily make a numbered list an essay.

"Essay" means "to try." The trial can be for various effects, (to show, to argue, to persuade, to prove,) but it must be an attempt at getting it across -- through analysis. And again, that can take many forms. George Orwell and Martin Luther King Jr. were both excellent essayist, and I never read a traditional MLA essay by either. One of Orwell's essays was written something like a story, but it analyzed a situation in Orwell's life through personal inflection and, most importantly, it tried to show the reader what he had learned from it. There was a point to it, there was a conclusion, there was meaning that he tried to show the reader.

The same "trying" applies to all forms of essays, be they written or non-literary.

A statement that Iruka can't read isn't trying anything. It's a statement. It sits there, alone, unanalyzed, by itself. A list of such statements still isn't an essay.

Now, here's something else. A statement like that above, that Iruka can't read, is also a claim. That is, it's a portion of an argument. Thus, if it were part of an essay, the claim would need to be backed by evidence and by analysis in order to try to prove it.

Now if someone did all of that for each numbered "fact," then it could be an essay -- with numbered paragraphs.

essay(s)
~ A short literary composition on a single subject, usually presenting the personal view of the author.
~ Something resembling such a composition: a photojournalistic essay.
~ A testing or trial of the value or nature of a thing: an essay of the students' capabilities.
~ An initial attempt or endeavor, especially a tentative attempt.

As per definied in the dictionary. As composition is not defined by strict parameters, the word essay is not as restrictive as you make it.

I was expecting an essay (http://kaskait.livejournal.com/35399.html) about facts, not a list about fiction. Is that really so complicated?

Date: 2006-03-08 09:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] istoria.livejournal.com
You said the word was wrong to use. I am clarifying with the definition of the word. There is no complication involved. It's just fact while yours is an opinion on what an essay should be.

O.o I don't see what's wrong with the community. I find it all clever and more interesting to read than the standard essays. Format doesn't matter. Content does, and the people who have written for the community do a marvelous job doing so. I hope there are more that follow. Your icon does kick ass btw.

I find the whole concept of [livejournal.com profile] 20_truths very interesting and I think a lot of great work has been turned out there (and I really need to get to work on some of the characters and pairings I've signed up for!). Some of these complaints are kind of ridiculous. However, to forestall such complaints in the future...maybe you should include a polite note in the userinfo that if people are looking for analytical essays, they should go elsewhere, as what appears in [livejournal.com profile] 20_truths is more like fanfiction?

Just a suggestion; it might prevent this kind of wank in the future. I personally have no issues with [livejournal.com profile] 20_truths--I was briefly confused at the beginning, but after looking at examples, I quickly caught on, and I'm not upset at the lack of analytical essays or anything.
