i think he is an orphan. many of the characters are, simply because the kyuubi killed them, so I wouldn't be surprised. I assume that is the case with Lee. Of course, the chances of me being wrong are close to 9.9999999999%. i don't claim to be any kind of expert on the series.

Or maybe he is Gai's illegitimate child that not even Gai knows about. Everyone in Konoha assumes Lee is related to Gai, seeing as they look and act so much alike. But they don't want to say anything, because Gai is really into the whole gay scene, and they don't want to shatter his world.
