Anime in New York?

So, I live in Arizona where it's hot and there are no anime places, that I know of. Or good ones atleast.

But, this Thursday I'm going to New York! And I've heard about a lot of anime stuff up there, especially Naruto things, so I was wondering for you New Yorkers or those who have been there, are the rumors true? And, if they are, where are these places? Addresses or cross roads or even cities are fine for me!

Well, by going to New York, do you mean you're going to New York City? If so, check out Chinatown, specifically the Elizabeth Center Mall on Elizabeth Street, just off of Canal Street. Tons of stuff there. :D

Also, check out Kinokuniya Bookstore across the street from Rockefeller Center. I believe it's on 59th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues.

I hope we're going to New York city, I know we're going to a funeral in Syracuse, but we're not gonna stay there the whole time. So, this can help me when we go...'You can go look at some stores while I look at anime!'

Erk. Syracuse is like, not even close to near New York City. I hope you get to go, but it's like...far. Really far. Like...a good 5 hour or so drive, depending on traffic. @_________@

Ehhh....gross. Well, I think we're landing in Hartford, which might be closer to NYC (I don't know my geography, obviously xD) So maybe on our way back in, because now I really want to!

Mmm, totally different directions, but Hartford is like...2 hours or so from Manhattan? Though that's a crazy-far airport to fly into when you have Syracuse or Ithaca or even Rochester to land at. And I don't blame you for not knowing your geography, so to speak, you're not from this part of the country. XD;

Good luck! Everyone should go to New York (and by that, I mean New York City/downstate New York, because upstate New York is like, a whole other world) at least once in their lives, I think. I can't imagine living long-term away from here. I did it for 2 1/2 years and I hated it.

I'm from down south, but when I went to New York, the one place I remember really having a spaz at was the Kinokuniya in Manhattan. It's a really huge Japanese bookstore, but they have some English stuff there too, if I remember correctly. I haven't been there in a couple years, so I don't know anything about their current selection, but it's definitely worth visiting.

I tried speaking Japanese to the ladies behind the counter, and they just laughed at me. ;____;

Erk...do you actually speak Japanese, or just know fangirly Japanese? Because about 99% of the people that work there are actually Japanese, so I can kinda see why they'd laugh. XD;

Heh, I've been studying it since I was twelve or so, so I would say that I know a bit more than the average fangirl. XD Still, I think it was probably because I have a funny accent when I speak it. That was what my last sensei told me, anyway. *snort* But who knows. I was amused.

Mrph, then that's not too cool of them to have done that, though they laugh sometimes when my friend Ri talks to them in Japanese, at most places, even at Book-Off, and she's pretty damn fluent and has an excellent accent, she even did a study-abroad to Japan. I think it's likely just the fact that they're not used to non-Asians speaking to them in Japanese. XD;

What they said about Kinokuniya. It's the best place ever.

They sell authentic Japanese Naruto manga (and they have the Viz ones too), plus half a billion other series (it's a HUGE place) in both English and Japanese. They have Naruto t-shirts and action figures and some stuff like that, too, and a bunch of Japanese music including the Naruto OSTs.

I went there, and it was basically like heaven *_* You should definitely check it out.

It's at 49th between 5th and 6th avenues.

Ahaha. I couldn't remember what street it was on, I just know how to get there. *doesn't pay attention when she's in Manhattan* Though honestly, I don't really like that Kino, they're way too crowded and it's hard to find stuff, though their music selection is better than most. I prefer the one at the Palisades Mall, as they have a much better selection of other merch, and it's not so insane. If I'm going to a Japanese bookstore in Manhattan, I'd rather go to Asahiya. :D

I went to AniZona 2 with the same buddy I'm planning to attend college with. XD It was both of our's first con ever. 8D We even went all out Narutard style and cosplayed (Kotetsu and Izumo, 'cause obscure background ninjas need more love).

I never got around to posting any pictures... maybe I should. :P

Kinokuniya is awesome, but...

You can also go to this store in Manhattan called Forbidden Planet. It's near 14th Street Union square, where the huge Virgin Records Megastore is. I'm not exactly sure of the street itself, but if you're in the area, I'm sure if you asked someone they'd be able to tell you.

i can point you to some places if you're in tucson or up north- phx has several places, from what i understand. didja go to Anizona 1 or 2? i went to the second one, it was very fun :)

i live in tucson right now, and have managed to find several places that are nice and the people there are great- wonderful otaku like me! :)

:D! You're coming to my homecity. Manhattan, riiight? YAY. *has lived here for her entire life* Ohh, guess I've never noticed that not everyone gets anime stores all over the place. xD

First - get a subway map. Subway maps are your friend. :D Second, a metrocard. Preferably, the all day fun pass. And monies. Lots of money. ..xD.

BUT UH. Anyway. If it's Manhattan, there's tons of places, uhm...lemme see...the Village's just awesome in general if you're into gothpunkrebelliousness...THEY HAVE THE BEST T-SHIRTS. :D!

Plus, they've got St Mark's comic shop, (Haven't been in awhile, so I'm not sure of the street, but if you ask anyone, they'll tell ya xD) and pratically all the B&N's sell mangas. Also, uhm...in Chinatown, which most people've mentioned, the Elizabeth mall. They're really cheap (NOT the DVD's, STAY AWAY from the sellers...'cause the subs suck) they've got posters, plushies, keychains...pretty much all the good stuff. Get there early though, it's usually crowded. 14th and Union Square's got Forbidden Planet - I don't go there often, but it's awesome too. People play Yu-Gi-Oh upstairs, as well as other card games, they have mangas, other comics, toys and that, and just geekyness galore.

forbidden planet is like right across the street from the theater on the corner of 13th and broadway
another good comic shop is st. marks comics, its in st. marks place (no too far from union sq, just a 10 minute walk maybe) its kind of hard to spot because its a little underground (like, you have to walk down stairs to get in)
but the sign is checkered and you can look out for that (in my opinion its better than forbidden planet)

also, while youre in st. marks, you should definitly check out toy tokyo (2nd floor of 121 2nd ave right when you get out of st. marks... you can probably just ask someone) its got a big wooden cut out of godzilla in front, its hard to miss
and yeah, china town is a good place to go
and like other people suggested kinokuniya is good too, and its a big store, so

check out other non-anime oriented places too! nyc is the best for realzzzzzz
