Fic- Drean Within a Dream
May. 31st, 2006 03:05 pmTitle: Dream Within a Dream
Rating: G
Genre: Hoy @_@ ummm I would put it under psychological/general, I guess..
Summary: An odd look into why Naruto might have decided to persue his dream of being Hokage.
Notes: My first attempt at a Naruto fic as well as being my first attempt at any sort of fic in probably over a year. Mild spoilers. Can be taken however you want :D
It was amazing how everything could start out with one simple dream. A half-imagined movie which played inside one’s head, growing and changing, looping and winding until it wormed its way to the very core of the dreamer’s heart. He’d known when it first started that it would end up consuming his life. He didn’t care. That image which had visited so long ago, an image which had been with him for as long as he could remember.
This dream, which was always tinged in backgrounds of yellow and orange, usually came when he was troubled; when he had a lot on his mind and needed that small boost of confidence which no one else could seem to elevate or maybe, just maybe he had never wanted to try. The dream was his best kept secret, even more so than that beast which was sealed inside him. This dream and the beast were connected, he felt, but it didn’t matter.
What did matter, what did worry him, was that these dreams were coming to visit less and less often. Naruto wasn’t sure if it was simply because he was outgrowing the need for this imagined consolation or if the image was just getting weak with the passage of time. He had the feeling that it was the latter, but hoped so very much that it was the former. The latter held too many frightening possibilities.
He was here again, in this dream. The background was different this time; another worry. The familiar yellow which seemed to glow from the figure before his eyes was there no longer. In its place stood the crimson red of blood and even that seemed to be fading to nearly black with age. The figure which had been so clear and vivid when he was younger was now a simple shimmer, a shadowy blob which was only identifiable by the outlines of the cloak he knew so well and that spike of hair he so mirrored.
Usually in these dreams, the figure was the first one to speak in that cheerful voice Naruto also tried to mirror, but never quite managed to have that same quality. This time, however, it was Naruto who spoke first. There was a sense of urgency in it, as if this was the last time he would ever get the chance to ask the question which had been haunting him for years but never answered.
“Why… do you care if I become Hokage? Why did you plant that idea in my head in the first place?”
The whites of the figures eyes disappeared as he closed lids Naruto couldn’t see. “Because I know you can, that you should. Because you’re more dear to me than you might ever know. You helped me save the village… and I had to use you for that.”
“Repentance?”
A short pause and the whites appeared again with a vivid circle of blue in the center. “It’s more than that, but that may be part of it.”
There wasn’t much that Naruto could think of to say to that. “Is this the last time I’ll see you?”
There was another pause, this time longer. The figure strode over to Naruto and placed a hand upon his head much in the same way Kakashi-sensei would or that Ero-sennin. As that hand ruffled his hair, the form of the figure became clearer and the colors he associated with the Yondaime spread from that hand to the rest of his body. He was reminded simultaneously of that encounter with Tsunade before they had taken off for Konohakagure and of that very first dream he had so long ago.
“Become a respectable Hokage, Naruto. Make me proud.”
Dread filled the boy as these words were uttered. There was a sense of finality in them and he reached out a hand in order to grasp onto the figure. If he could, then maybe he wouldn’t go. If he could, then maybe he could borrow that strength… just one more time.
“Wait!!!” he yelled, completely ignoring the pain which coursed his body. It hadn’t been there in that dream…
The red and yellow of his dream were gone now. In its place were the whites of the hospital, and the silver and pink of his teammates. They were both on the sides of his bed and looking at him with worry. Sakura’s strong hand gently pushed him back into the mattress from the sitting position he hadn’t realized he had been in.
“Calm down, Naruto. You’re okay. It’s all okay,” she said in attempts to soothe the upset boy.
“Welcome back to the land of the living,” Kakashi said in his own peculiar way of expressing relief.
Naruto stared at the ceiling. The land… of the living? That’s right… his dream, that figure was dead. He had been killed sealing that thing inside him. Those last words the Yondaime uttered sang in his mind.
Become a respectable Hokage, Naruto. Make me proud.
A sad, bittersweet smile crossed his face. “Yeah…” I will.
The only other place this is at is my personal journal. Feel special XD
