Hey guys,

Does anyone know exactly how old Yondaime was when he died? I'm guessing around mid-twenties, but an exact number would be very useful.

Unfortunately, Kishimoto doesn't give him an age. All we know is his birthday.

I would guess late 20s early 30s. (Around Kakashi's age after the time skip.) I only base this on I don't think the Third would have stepped down if the 4th was too young.

I'll be mauled if I say this - but my guess is about late teens to early 20's. I mean, Konoha and Stone were in war and I figured that there was another war a few years back so they had to promote Yondaime early during his childhood, since Obito and Rin were chuunin (while Kakashi a jouin) during the Kakashi Gaiden Arc despite their age.

I agree, and I actually made some calculations some time ago based on leafninja.com (http://www.leafninja.com)'s info.

When Sasuke leaves Konoha, the ages were something like this:
Naruto + co.: 13
Kakashi: 27
Jiraiya + co.: 51

The Kyuubi incident was 13 years before that:
Naruto: 0
Kakashi: 14
Jiraiya: 38

Kakashi Gaiden was ~1 year before the Kyuubi, before the Yondaime Hokage actually becomes the Hokage¹:
Kakashi: 13
Jiraiya: 37
Yondaime: 20, because...

Jiraiya trained the-Yondaime-Hokage-to-be 24 years before the series and Yondaime graduated when he was 10:
Jiraiya: 27
Kakashi: 3
Yondaime: 10

So... He would've been 20, 21 when he died.

I did think he was a bit young but as you said, Kakashi was made Chuunin at the tender age of 6 and Jounin when he was 13. Clearly it's the talent that matters, not age.

¹ Based on the fact that the other ninja don't call him Hokage, just "you" and "the Konoha Yellow Flash".
