So, I've found that some people believe that the filler episodes are canon, and true to the Naruto plot line.

I have unarguable proof that the fillers are NOT canon.  I'm not sure if anyone's pointed this out yet...I haven't really been paying attention lately because **insert lame excuse here** but it never hurts to talk about things again! lol :)

Let's all think back to those horrifying days ...weeks...months of the Naruto fillers...

**flashback**

Hyuga Neji, Tenten, Rock Lee, and Uzumaki Naruto have all been assigned to travel to some place and take care of some thing (totally vague, I know, but you'll all know the episodes, I promise!).

Naturally, Naruto at first refuses this mission.  He wants to just leave with Jiraiya and begin his years of training.  In the end, he agrees to, and is more than excited about,  the mission.  Why?

Rock Lee.

Yes, Rock Lee.  Konoha's taijutsu master-in-training.

How?  That's simple.  He invites Naruto to have ramen with him.  Nope, it wasn't the ramen that changed out Naruto's mind about going.  Nope, nope!  It was something Lee said.

It went something like this:

"Naruto, this guy (Raiga) that we're going to fight is one of the seven swords people.  Who else do we know that was one of those?  Yes, Kisame.  And who is Kisame?  Yes, he's the partner of Itachi.  Uchiha Itachi.  Sasuke's brother.  Sasuke is trying to become super powerful to kill Itachi, right?  So then, to get to my point, Raiga might know where Kisame is, and we can find Itachi by finding Kisame, and since Sasuke is going after Itachi, we might find some clues about him from this Raiga guy."

That's my basic paraphrasing... lol! It's been a while since I watched the episode. :)

To get to my own point...

Neji, Tenten, and Lee ( or as I call them, NTL) all dealt with the "Raiga equals info on Kisame" mission with Naruto. (Episodes 152-157)

In the most recent episodes, Gai-sensei  and his team fight against Kisame.  The entire time, Gai has no clue who Kisame is.  He doesn't remember kicking Kisame in the face to protect Kakashi back in episode...82 (I think).  The whole time team Gai fought against Kisame, none of them knew who he was, or how he knew Gai-sensei. 

Shouldn't they have known about Kisame after Lee's little speech to Naruto to get him to go on the Raiga mission, and after Naruto questions Raiga about Kisame?

Nope.  Because the Raiga mission happened as a filler episode. 

NTL apparently never heard about their sensei's encounter with Kisame because they know nothing about him when they fight against him in the future. 

They can't remember all of Naruto's complaining, and his questioning Raiga of the whereabouts of Kisame, or even Lee's speech, because it never happened to them. 

It was just a filler episode, and not Naruto canon. 

So all 85 episodes, from after Sasuke left to the beginning of Shippuden, were nothing.  Whatever happened in the fillers, exists only in the fillers.  There was no point to them whatsoever...and we all still watched them. :p

Sorry if my thought process is all over the place here.  :)  I hope you all get my point though!

And if you're wondering, I came across a forum (in the dark back alley of the internet meaning I don't remember where) of people arguing over the "canon-ness" of the filler episodes.  Apparently because that Matsuri character has made an appearance in the Shippuden episodes, some people are questioning canon things. 

This bit about Lee explaining Raiga's connection to Kisame wandered into my head this morning and I needed to finally rant my illogically structured logical thoughts behind all of this! :)

I was hunting through deviant art and found an ongoing discussion, though I don't remember exactly where, and it has been really bothering me. I was going to post and support the fillers-don't-equal-canon arguer but it seemed too troublesome. The ones in support of the fillers being canon were probably a bunch of new people to the fandom world.

....How? It was never explained anyway what Sand was doing 'offstage' while Sasori and Deidara were being shiny and gorgeous. I don't know; people whined and whined and whined for months about fillers and now they stick a few extra scenes into Shippuden (further padding to lengthen the story, may I add - you want back into more filler arcs because they catch up sooner rather than later?) and people are off again!

I like the new scenes; they're a treat.

There's something about Matsuri bothering me a lot...Matsuri was in the Academy during the fillers. Baki said that the people being sent to...wherever-the-fuck Temari is guarding have to be jounin level or higher.

I didn't know Matsuri was actually in the fillers... lol I didn't watch the fillers. I thought she was just a new side character that everyone was ragging on because she wasn't in the manga.

But yeah... That's kinda wrong. The anime team should plan ahead better.

In my opinion, since there were two girls in Temari's team, they should have used the other one... the one with stripes on her cheeks. She was prettier anyway.

Of course the fillers are canon; they all spent most of it completely off their faces on curry! I would be amazed if they remembered it at all! XD

(Besides I LOVE the characters in this story; Raiga is a wonderfully emo goth and Karashi....Karashi....God, what a genius character; his expressions were brilliant!)

We all still watched them because most of them were very entertaining! (Except those people who watched them because they have to have something to whine about).

CURRY OF LIFE!!! I will admit that the curry faces = WIN, and drunk Lee AND NEJI? Wonderful.

The fillers were entertaining part of the time, but after a while, the storylines just sucked. I mean, one of the last ones, the prison-transfer episode with the guard who kept yelling for his brother (AKIO!) who was supposedly killed by the prisoner they were transferring. I'm sorry, but that was a pathetic and predictable arc. It was like they were running out of ideas.

Let us turn to the dictionary for answers.

"canon5 [ˈkӕnən] noun

all the writings of an author that are accepted as genuine."

Therefore, anything not from the manga or by Kishimoto =/= not canon.

I really dislike it when people of the fandom -- any fandom -- argue whether something obviously not canon that it is. x_X Do people not realise the manga-ka doesn't animate the episodes? Heck, the only films that actually stay true to their written form is probably Harry Potter and Interview with the Vampire; everything else is up to other scriptwriters -- who is not Kishimoto.

Ah well. If that's too hard for people to think about, then let's look back at the other factor: plot holes. Like you've mentioned, from the Raiga arc, we would've assumed Lee knows about Kisame. So why didn't he remind Gai? o_O That isn't a really big plot hole, however, if you look at Benny Matsuyama (a guy no one has heard of)'s so called "official" FFVII novelisation of Aerith after she died, you've got huge plot holes: Hojo is shown in the lifestream, dead, yet, he's somehow still in the living world in Dirge of Cerberus. =__=;

It's kind of sad that the anime doesn't always match the manga. I mean, it's nice to get little extra scenes, but to come up with completely new situations for the characters that aren't going to tie back into the main plot line is kind of annoying.

Poor Mizuki; it really pisses me off that a perfectly good story was spoiled by poor animation of the concept.

What happened to Mizuki has, it turns out, a good canon basis too (since peope care about 'canon' so highly), which is that Orochimaru is into genetic manipulation. Yamato. And Kishimoto did write him.

Orochimaru played with human DNA and cloning and the idea that he played with the idea of fusing animal and human DNA, like Dr Moreau, is not a ridiculous one.

I agree 100%.
That's why I'm going to laugh so hard if they make the rest of the mist swordsmen show up and they'll be like "Oh, lol, well there were really 8 swordsmen, can't forget about Raiga!" Or "Maybe Raiga was just an imposter! :O" People thinking filler episodes are canon will all go into a state of shock, praising the genius and irony of it all!
But chances are slim this would happen either if Kishimoto decides to be nice and have one of the swordsmen already dead or something.

They probably won't even get to the seven swordsmen for a while though...with the way things are moving. Which isn't bad, except we have to deal with boring "..." conversations where nothing is really said between any of the characters.

While we're going on that logic (I just remembered) movies don't count as canon either! Thank God In the third movie (which is still pre-timeskip) Naruto goes all Kyuubi in front of Sakura and Kakashi because some little twitthe kid needing saving. Sakura is completely un-phased. Not her first time seeing it I guess?

However, in the manga (and now recent anime episodes) Naruto is surprised that Sakura knows about his status as a jinchuuriki because SHE'D NEVER SEEN HIS TRANSFORMATION BEFORE for one, two he'd never told her, and three no one was supposed to talk about it. But Sakura explains that she read up on him in Tsunade's files. Ah Sakura, you sly girl you. ^_~ Nice little plot hole there thanks to the third movie. That is if you're considering the movies to be canon.

I'm kind of annoyed at the fillers for all the fake information. For a while, I went along happily believing that the Sound bases were booby-trapped to high heaven. Then I find out I'm wrong. >:( *scibble scribble rewrite rewrite*

I mean, I wouldn't be complaining if it didn't collide with the ACTUAL MANGA at all. But there's already been a ton of problems, and if Anko ever gets a back story there's another on the heap.

DAMMIT, PIERROT, IF YOU WERE GOING TO SCREW WITH CANON WHY COULDN'T YOU BRING HAKU BACK FOR A WHILE?! At least do something useful with your shit...
