Total crack is hard for me to fandom, so they got to have some actual interaction in the series. I don't bother getting too creative, but I'm a crazy slasher by nature. If the canon is hetero, I'm not going to encourage it because it doesn't need my affection, it's there. *coughnejitentencough* Yuri is spelt with one u, by the way.
I tend to prefer het crack pairings, especially in fanfic. I have a separate set of pairings I hope actually happen in canon, but don't seek out fanfic for.
Canon or potentially canon pairings usually bore me. The pairings I like best usually feature characters that have never actually met, because it's always amusing to see how they could possibly get together. XD
I prefer het crack pairings in all anime/manga series, but I also ship more canon pairings as well, but I tend to get bored with them kind of quickly, and that's when I read me some quality crack. 8D
Pairings I support? Heterosexual. I just think too logically to grasp some yaoi/yuri pairings, *coughsasukecough* because it's long-term or nothing for me. I don't support pairings that I know couldn't end properly because of some facet of one part of the pairing's nature.
However, I don't hate yaoi and yuri. I read it--when it's crack, I think it's hilarious; when it's serious, I take it as such. It's the same for het.
But when I see "support," I think "okay, which ones make sense in my head," and "which ones of those have the interaction and chemistry I like best".
No, not because they are yaoi/yuri. It's because of the specific characters involved. I can't grasp some het pairings in that same way.
It's just...here, I'll use Sasuke as an example.
He wants to rebuild his clan. And unless he knows some sort of zombie-ing jutsu that would bring the dead clansmen back to life, he needs to get with a girl. Unless something pretty implausible happens, like Sasuke hiring a lot of women to have his babies, and then living with his SO for the rest of his life with those illegitimate children, I don't see a pairing with him working out.
I see a lot of children from clans having a responsibility to their clan to have children, to carry on the family name and jutsu specialty.
I also can't seriously grasp pairings between characters of opposing sides in a fight (ie, a member of Akatsuki with a Konoha villager, in this timeline). The problems and issues associated with such a relationship feel too complex to be able to work out.
That's about as well as I can describe it. I hope that clarifies things for you. ^^
I agree with the polyamory for Sasuke--I recall a fic where he (and Naruto) actually did get random women to give birth to his children, and he somehow made them his official children through documentation and legalization and other bureaucratic methods. I don't think the SasuNaru was explicit, but the issue of carrying on the family name is solved. And while it's not likely in canon, yes, it could be written to work.
Crack pairings can be a lot of fun if they're written well, I have to agree. I usually favor the epic-length AU that gives interaction and background for the pairing. In that context, I think I could see enemyxenemy. And the story may be great, and the interaction perfect--but I don't think I would ship it, which is key to my original response to the poll.
Now, if we were to go into what I read--that would be anything. I love seeing what people make of challenges, or seemingly impossible couples or situations--and, honestly, I'd love to be presented with those challenges for my own writing. It's fun to wrack your mind for ways that x and y can possibly get together, or how a and b could wind up on opposite sides of a fight, even though they're the best of friends in canon.
But isn't Sasuke usually heartbreaking? It's his MO or something, I swear.
I don't know about other people, but for me shipping is essentially finding every little thing about the pairing I can. Which sounds more obsessive than anything else, but hey--it's what I do. ^^
I'd love to friend you back...although I must warn you, you'll rarely get anything but freaking out over fandom through my journal.
I'm usually pretty particular about what type of things I'll read/look at in general anyway, though. I ship everything, but I only read/look for one or two pairings.
Being gay myself I lean towards yaoi and yuri out of want for something that's closer to my own interests, at least when it comes to the occasional R/NC-17 rated fanfiction. I don't usually read het pr0nz unless I REALLY like the pairing (see: BLEACH fandom).
In every fandom I'm in I have a few favorite pairings, a few (sometimes none *GASP*) that make me cringe, and everything else is good. Everything describes my preference pretty well. ._o
i usually get into pairings by seeing a good fanart or fanfic of the pairing - regardless of chemistry. like, even really crack pairings.. if someone writes a good fic on it, it'll grow on me.
I prefer het and yaoi. I'm not a fan of yuri, but I have nothing against it. To each his/her own, I guess. I used to be a stickler for canon, but I don't really care any more. There has to be some reasoning behind the pair, though. You can't just say that Konohamaru and Kisame are suddenly going at it because you feel like it. Well, I guess you can, but I won't like it. 0_o
All's good cept the 'cests. Het, yaoi, yuri, crack...all that's fine when done right. No amount of acclaim, however, could make me enjoy a 'cest pairing.

And being canon doesn't hurt pairings any. ;P
