Theories Discussion
Jun. 22nd, 2007 01:17 pmHaving intended both of the following theories purely in jest at first, I am somewhat disturbed at how sensible they are starting to sound upon further research. There are spoilers for the 'Root' characters, and Suigetsu. If you haven't seen the Wave Country arc, however, I have no sympathy for you.
Warning, links to image-heavy.
Kaiza (Inari's Dad) is...?
...Danzou, according to the character designs.

(1) Arms are missing on Kaiza, Danzou's sleeves are pinned to the sides and have no shape to suggest limbs.
(2) The left eye (his right) is damaged to the point where it cannot be opened. Danzou's is bandaged and presumed missing or unuseable.
(3) The same cross-shape scar on the chin.
Those are the main visual similarities I noticed. Danzou's hair is considerably limper, but he is older. On top of that, Kaiza says to Inari 'Where I come from, dogs are seen as loyal allies'. The Inuzukas, or Kakashi's dogs, perhaps? Considering Root's penchant for codenames, it's highly unlikely we can assume that Danzou has kept the same name through his life.
Pictures of Kaiza from volume 3, pictures of Danzou from chapter 285.
Naturally, Danzou is very old, and it is very unlikely. At the very least, this is a show of how Kishimoto seems to mix character traits to ridiculous lengths.
However, there are age-altering jutsus. Just to throw that into the mix.
DISCLAIMER: I do not seriously follow this theory in relation to the plot of Naruto, but I find it both amusing and interesting. If people can believe Tobi is Danzou, then I can argue that Danzou is a minor flashback-only character from the Wave Country arc.
----end of theory----
Okay, I was joking on that one. Have fun with it.
The next may be a previously expressed theory, but I have not yet found any posts about it, thus:
Houzuki Suigetsu is...?
Sai's 'Brother'?
First of all, let me say that this idea was in my mind long before Sai's Brother, hereafter referred to as Brother, and Suigetsu were shown to have the same hair colour. In fact, when I reread the Brother part and discovered that he had white hair, I predicted Suigetsu's hair colour as a joke. Surprise.
There are several reasons that I believe Brother has to be alive and a current character.
1. Having Sai say 'My brother is dead' is too much of a declaration to be the complete truth. A better lexical choice would be 'was killed', if he meant to show finality.
2. Suigetsu is 'one of the Houzuki brothers'. Kisame was given this line to establish that Suigetsu and Sai both have 'brother' links. Occam's Razor states that the simplest explanation is often the most effective, leading to my statement, "With only two characters with missing 'brother' characters, they are more likely to be linked to each other than to two different people not yet introduced."
I'm not saying he's biologically linked - Sai actually says that he's not his real brother; that it's more of a platonic bond than a genetic tie.
Looking at the purely physical similarities, Brother and Suigetsu look incredibly alike. Both have white hair in the same style, or at least as similar a style as young!Sai is to current!Sai.
[EDIT] Extra panel of Brother from
farlist here.
Then there is the matter of behaviour. I have two separate things for this.
1. 'He takes the weapons and armour of each as he defeats them...'
As we can see here, both pre!emotionwipe!Sai and Brother have a tradition of taking their defeated enemy's weapons and going on to the next battle. Suigetsu's current aim? To defeat Hoshigaki Kisame in battle and take the Samehada for himself.
2. 'And his pe... well, it's alright.'
Everyone who knows Sai knows his penchant for making insulting remarks about the other guys's penis. So much so that it has become a running gag in fandom. So, surely anyone who has met Sai will remember this quirk?
When the ninja insults Suigetsu in that specific fashion, he automatically dismisses his Sasuke-given order to not kill. Did it strike a deeply-hidden nerve, perhaps?
Using the same panel (Here it is again), we learn the following about Brother, 'a loud-mouthed, hasty boy' 'no dignity' 'but really, like [Naruto] he was serious in all he did.'
As much of Suigetsu as we have seen so far, that describes him utterly. In fact, a lot of fandom have remarked that Sasuke is unconsciously replacing Naruto's presence in his team with Suigetsu. Since Sai has said that they (Brother and Naruto) are alike, we can say,
(Let '=' be 'is similar to')
Naruto = Brother
Suigetsu = Naruto
Therefore Suigetsu = Brother.
Faulty logic, and I apologise for it, but that's how I see it.
[EDIT] I forgot to add one of the paragraphs. Gawd. To the argument that Suigetsu is from Mist and Sai is from Konoha, I say that Sai is actually from 'root', and Mist's loyalties have never been that strong. To compound this, Sai has been trained in ways resembling those of the Bloody Mist. Also, Suigetsu remarks, 'You're such a Leaf ninja, Sasuke,' despite being in a tank for a few years. If you look at Konoha's past, they have a history of wiping out aggressors with a small number of super-talented individuals alongside a larger group of fodder. That doesn't seem as pacifistic as he implies. However, it is EXACTLY the opinion that Danzou expressed to Tsunade - that the village was too soft. Suigetsu could only have learned this from a source inside Leaf, since I seriously doubt he believed anything Orochimaru said about Leaf.
Finally, I can say that with the current arc, it is very likely that Suigetsu is going to run into Sai at some point, and with everyone else pairing off to fight or plot, I will be hoping that the theory holds true.
Please, discuss. :D
I hope at least one of you agrees, or I just spent an hour finding manga pages for nothing. T______T

Date: 2007-06-22 01:51 pm (UTC)Danzou is supposed to be really old. I mean, he competed against the fourth for the title of the fourth (if I remember correctly... but I have a bad memory, so that might not be the case). Inari's dad was not that old, but I can see the similarities in the character design. Perhaps they were related somehow. Hmm... I wonder if we'll ever get back to Danzou and Roots and stuff.
Suigetsu=Sai's brother sounds like a brilliant theory, but Suigetsu is definitely from the Mist, and Sai is from Konoha. Logistically, it would be a difficult theory to tie back together, but it would be interesting. That means that Naruto's "brother" is with Sai's "brother."

Date: 2007-06-22 01:59 pm (UTC)I've added the argument of the Mist/Leaf problem, but that only appears problematic because I was an idiot and forgot to actually add that part to my argument. It's up now. ^^

Date: 2007-06-22 02:06 pm (UTC)I personally think Kishimoto is short on originality. o.o
It would seem rather odd if every dead character started popping back to life, yes? @___@ Also, Danzou is older than Kaiza, Kaiza has only been dead for presumably 3-7 years (presuming Inari was at least 4 years old when he died).

Date: 2007-06-22 02:28 pm (UTC)I think it's humorous that you're talking about dead characters popping back up, and your icon is Kikyou.

Date: 2007-06-22 02:28 pm (UTC)Wow. Danzou + Kaiza and Sai's brother + Suigetsu look so much alike!
I think Kishimoto's reason for the similarities between his mysterious characters is that he just likes to read everyone's theories. *has mental image of Kishimoto merrily eating popcorn in front of the computer screen* XD
Your Suigetsu + Sai's brother theory is really intriguing. I'm not sure yet where I stand here. Because of the difference in their home villages, I'm leaning to the negative side. BUT because it would make damn good drama, a part of me wants it to be true. Although, it'll be crazy when they meet no matter what though :D

I still agree with you pretty whole-heartedly. The coincidences are too numerous and favorable to deny.

Date: 2007-06-22 08:15 pm (UTC)He may just have had that basic design jotted down somewhere, and used it twice thinking that it looked cool and that the characters were far enough apart that it wouldn't be noticed.

Date: 2007-06-23 12:34 pm (UTC)Well. Why do you think Orochimaru had Suigetsu in a tube all that time? It was a prison sure, but I bet besides experimentation they cured the illness. I mean it isn't far fetched, Kabuto knows a hella lot about Medical jutsu just look at how long they kept Kimmimaru(sp) alive before he died?
Just trying to help out the cause. I agree with this theory, the SaixSuigetsu brother one.
