Hi,

Longtime lurker here. I have a question that's been bugging me for a while.

Are inter-village marriages/ marital alliances allowed in Naruto-world? If so, how does it work out?

For instance, say Shikamaru and Temari were to marry. Would Shikamaru leave Konoha and go to Suna and be a Suna nin? Or would Temari come to Konoha and make it her home? What about their kids? Where would they belong?

The way I see it, a shinobi's skill belongs to the village, which is why missing-nins are hunted down and their bodies disposed of. If a shinobi were to leave his/her village after marriage, wouldn't the village be essentially letting go of their skill and talent, handing it over to the other village? Will the village that lets go of the shinobi get something in return by way of compensation?

Or are inter-village marriages forbidden?

I'd like to know what others think. Any theories?

P.S: I'm just using Shikamaru and Temari as examples:)

I think it would be forbidden.

I'm sure Shikamaru would always belong to leaf even if he lived in Suna, and Temari always Suna even if she lived in Konoha. Since it's about Naruto and Konoha she'd probably go to Konoha and would probably have their kid go to a Konoha school making him/her a Konoha ninja.

I'm sure they're not gonna hunt down Shikamaru/Temari for teaching their child their skills that run in their family. There probably is some rule Kishimoto will make up if this happens during the manga time line.

It probably would'nt be nearly as much of a problem if Shikamaru were to leave Konoha, since he's not related to anyone important (like Temari is) and doesn't have any bloodline abilities. Now, if someone from the Hyuuga clan or one of the other bloodlines clans were to try to marry someone from another village, I imagine there would be quite a bit of resistance.

I know, and I didn't say that it wouldn't cause any problems at all; Shikamaru is a very talented ninja. But we've seen how protective the bloodline clans are when it comes to their genetic abilities: the Hyuuga are obviously willing to kill one of their own rather than let the body of a Byakugan user fall into the hands of another village's ninja. The fact is, every village probably has ninja like Shikamaru who are incredibly intelligent strategists. But so far it seems that the bloodline techniques are unique to specific villages, and that's precisely why the clans and villages are so protective of them: this is something that enemy ninja from other villages don't have and probably don't know much about, thus putting them at an obvious disadvantage in battle. But if someone from the Hyuuga clan wants to marry someone from the another village and go live with that person, you have a problem: the trait is no longer unique to Konoha. The other village's ninja will now have ample opportunity to observe and understand the Byakugan, and possibly come up with ways to combat it. And in that case, if the two villages ever came into conflict it would mean that Konoha has one less advantage.

That's funny, I'd been thinking about the same thing some time ago because of a fanfic... and I'm not really sure Oo I think they'd need to get a formal permission of the Kage of the village they want to leave (because of marriage). And only if, let's say Tsunade, allows Shikamaru to leave the village for marriage, he can marry Temari and settle down with her in Suna. As for returning after a divorce... I haven't thought much about that, but I think it would be just as confusing as the marriage dilemma XD

I think, in Shikamaru's case, Temari would come to Konoha. But otherwise, it's probably forbidden. Temari's too loyal to her brother and Shikamaru's waaay too lazy to go anywhere he doesn't have to. D: -shot-

Forbidden. I don't see how either village would allow it any time soon. Maybe after Naruto becomes Rokudaime and reforms the whole nin world before dying of old age. lawl.

I mean, Alliances are one thing, but having your ninja going off and marrying foreigners and possibly LEAVING? Children are an even bigger problem, once any of them start showing talent both villages would be bargaining for them. So I think it's forbidden. Nin villages are always competing with each other, anyway; over mission contracts, power, etc. It'd be too messy. True alliances themselves are enough of an achievement, for now. Remember, Chiyo-baasama was really distrustful and shocked at how Konoha and Suna were really honoring their alliance, and how Konoha actually sent capable ninja to help save Suna's Kazekage.

It is possible that the opposing ninja retires his/her duty as a shinobi before heading off and joining another hidden village. That way, it's more of a political move of loyalty...

Therefore, either Temari of Shikamaru (for example) has to formally stop being a ninja...unless one of them goes back home. The kids will stay in the country they were born, no exceptions to that rule.

I'm not liking this idea, but it seems possible.

I think it would be somewhat forbidden, or at least there'd be terms and restrictions. But I think with the how the Naruto world has been changing thanks to the younger generations, they might become a bit easier on the rules.

I reckon ShikaTem could seriously work since Temari is a representative of Suna.

Since Temari is already acting as an ambassador of Suna in Konoha, my sister & I thought she would probably become a permanent ambassador in Konoha. Usually marriage between different nations is probably discouraged, but since the Konoha/Suna alliance is only likely to get stronger if Naruto does become Hokage I could see restrictions not being so enforced. Temari/Skikamaru kids may have dual citizenship as children and when they reach genin training age they will have to decide in which village to finish training. Suna has already taken some of Konoha's training ideas, so I can see not just ideas but some bloodlines crossing - which should be good cause inbreeding is a bad thing (which may be why there seems to be only a few powerful families in Suna, they need some new blood).
