Ok so,

Who knows if this has ever been brought up - but I'm curious as to what you guys think about Konoha Technology.

Clearly they have electricity, as well as candles and the like.

I know that in one episode (and I'm obviously dating myself now) that there was a playback tape (either that or I was dillusional).

Thus - giving us the knowledge that had either BETA or VHS (It looked more like VHS though, but the size of the console made me think BETA), and with every video device there's a TV.

But - what about computers?

What about music?

I'm more concerned with the idea of music though simply because at the moment my muse enjoys music.

I'm just wondering if it would back as far as 8 Track or would they be at least to the cassette era. I personally don't think they'd be up to the era of CD players but that's open for discussion.

Thoughts? Ideas?

I'm curious. Indulge me. (:

In this filler arc, the monk had computers (they looked like laptops) when cheking up on filler!character names Sora who has the same attitude issues than Saucekay. O_o

I wouldn't for sure take what we see in filler as canon, though? There was also an ending with cellphones, but as far as I know ninja send messages to each other with birds in the manga. XD

I think there was an opening or an ending in the fillers from the first part (which I didn't exactly watch, so I might be mistaken) where Naruto played videogames. So I think they have at least that. Personally I believe they do have technology. Maybe not the most modern one, but smth from the 90's maybe...

You're welcome. Btw, here's the ending I was talking about. Looks like I wasn't wrong: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IlMlDvRrPY&feature=related

In the manga, I vaguely remember Sasuke having either a TV or a computer in his room before he left Konoha.

Though I don't think Kishi thinks much about what's supposed to be anachronistic or not, considering in an interview he once said "they don't have guns", but then proceeded to have a character compare something to a gun.

I remember in one of the movies they put out when the team goes to be bodyguards for this actress (really princess zomg), Naruto ends up in a city that looked preeetty much like modern day cities. So I'm guessing, you could see it as the villages being in the "country" whereas cities really do exist as well as technology. Only that Konoha and Co. abides to the more traditional ways of life.

Makes sense? XD

I don't know why but I'm sure that they had computer s- I think I saw Kabuto using one in Orochi's lair - or the medic-nins using it, not quite sure.

I seem to remember Kabuto staring at a bunch of monitors right before Kimimaru woke up and ran off.

If I had to guess, I'd say that analog technologies like radio and magnetic tapes are available but mostly to higher classes, and true digital technology and more advanced recording devices like security cameras are purely in the realm of the government.

I wouldn't really count any of the filler arcs when judging what kind of technology is available in that world.

They seem to have limited forms of electronics, but I've never noticed anything that even remotely resembles a power plant in any of the ninja villages (or anywhere else, for that matter). I wonder if they somehow use Ninjutsu to generate electricity.

During the Chuunin exams when Gaara's team arrived some guy went in and had a tape to show Anko, and put it in a tv.

I was always curious about the technology as well. It's good to read through all of these comments. =]

well, wait, if (pretty much) everyone agrees with the 90s-ish technology, then what about technology revolving around weaponry? i mean, people guns back in the 1700 and 1800s (pardon me if the dates are wrong. i didn't really pay that much attention to my world history class this year, so it could have been before that), so does the naruto-verse just not go into that realm of technology because they think ninja arts is all they need or what?

Kishi specifically said they don't have guns.. and any other type of exploding weapon seems to be taken care of via chakra or tags and such... so, look at it as maybe no gunpowder?

As people said, they don't have guns, and they don't have advanced ways of transport either. I'm guessing this is only logical, because they're shinobi -- they're weapons THEMSELVES, and their own way of transport too, what with transportation jutsu and all that. It's stuff they don't need.

Which is why I think that they probably do have computers and TV -- we've seen TV in it before, and there was, I think, a chapter title page of Naruto with a movie ticket. I also remember something about an Icha Icha movie, but that was in the anime only, I believe. So I wouldn't count it. XD

I think they have 90's technology mostly because that's around when Kishimoto started working on the series, and whatever tech they don't have available is logical, as I said above. :3

I don't have straight up answers for you, but the way I always figured it, it does look like they have TVs and computers; however, the life of a ninja is not very conducive to being inside a lot to watch TV or use the computer.

I imagine if you were trying to get in contact with a ninja, a bird or other animal would be more reliant than email, since an animal takes a definite x-many days depending on the distance, whereas an email would be "whenever the ninja has time to check their email which is probably once a month" or something to that effect. As for entertainment in the form of electronics, I just don't think they have the time.

In terms of more sophisticated transportation, I dunno, it just seems like ninja running is more efficient than a train because trains can derail and get attacked and all that and Ninjas On A Train is nowhere as cool as Snakes On A Plane. I mean I know I often think to myself, "man if I could run like a ninja I wouldn't NEED a car. :(" I don't know about you.

And stuff like guns, well, just look at Neji, he can pull a freaking Neo and just deflect them all with his SUPER HYUUGA SKILLZ.

So that's my thought.

I really think that there is no set time period at all, and things are added that make everything convenient. Wireless radios-- seriously now. So in anything I write, I generally keep technology out of it. Phones, computers, etc. If ninja had phones, even if they didn't use them to contact other countries for some reason, I distinctly remember Shikamaru's mother telling him that the Hokage's guards were sent to fetch him and bring them to her office in episode 110-111. Now why would they do that if he was a phone call away?

Electricity sure, but other than that, it feels like things are out of whack if you look into it too far, and has an amazing tendency to cause general confusion. Too much speculation, and plenty of arguments and facts. Keep it simple. But that's only if you're seriously worried about doing something wrong. If you want Naruto to listen to a CD player, it's yours to write and decide if it would be out-of-place or not. Likely you'll not get too many accusations regarding that.

...I'm willing to bet that Tsunade sent guards to fetch Shikamaru because he'd disregard a phone call as "troublesome"? (Amirite? You know I know the answer on most-anything Shikamaru-related.)

As for my opinion on technology, I pretty much don't have one since I have enough to think about regarding this fandom. (Besides, Ninja-running is much cooler than using cars, like kirikirimai said, and it would be much easier for enemy forces to use that technology as well. Can we also mention, NO PLOT/NO FUN PRETENDING WE'RE ALL NINJAS, KK?)
I'm not really sure about music and other forms of entertainment, but I assume, like everyone else, that it would be 90's technology, sans cellphones? Why? I have no clue.

tl;dr: Like my friend Amanda once said: "I'm not sure what time period [the show]'s in, but they're ninjas, so they can have microwaves."

they use this communication thingy, you know, the one with the head set and all. the technology in konoha (even the setting and all) is really absurd.:/

I remember Kishimoto saying that computer technology does exist in Narutoverse, but it is limited to 8-bit or something (I CAN HAZ FAMICOM?). Could somebody confirm this?
