I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, so forgive me if this is nothing new.

I'm starting to have doubts about Shikamaru's code breaking skills


and second thoughts about the code itself.

Shikamaru thinks the message is meant for Naruto and Kakashi tells them that the 'combination' needed to work out the code is Itcha Itcha Tactics, the answer they come up with seems to make sense, 'the real one isn't with them'.

But Jiraiya intended the message to go to the great toad sage and during his fight with pain he was thinking about his life, Naruto as the destined child and his first book, 'Ultimate Guts; A Ninja's Story'.

So are they using the right book?, Does the great toad sage read  Itcha Itcha?,  Could Shikamaru be
wrong? (gasp).

This theory fits in with Kishi's tendency to lead us up the garden path.

My hope is Naruto will come up with the real answer now he has read the book.

Feel free to throw rocks if you disagree.


Personally I love the idea that Konoha has been mislead because of Kakashi's obsession with porn.

I took the code to mean that the REAL Pein, the one who possesses the various bodies it not one of the six he fought, in other words, "forget these guys look for the puppet master" the third kid that Jiraiya spent three years with...Yagito was it? But since the people interpreting the message weren't there to see the fight they don't realize just what "them" he's talking about

Nagato! that's the little bugger! I bet he's the REAL Pein, and he's going around fallowing Jiraiya and picking up bodies of people he knew who died.

I thought we already knew he's the real Pain. What we don't know is where the Nagato body actually IS.

well I'm not sure if it was explicitly said or just heavily implied. Because for all we know Pain could have taken over younger Nagato as well. I'm not really sure. As for where the body is?. ..I vote for hidden in a secret chamber inside the nose of the second Hokage on the Hokage monument *nodnod definitely!

I don't think Kishimoto would do something insane like that. I don't think this is another "MAD PLOT TWIST ATTACK" thing like the whole Itachi fiasco. Just because he was thinking of the Naruto story doesn't mean Jiraiya intended for the message to come from that. And 'the real one isn't with them' just makes too much sense when applied to Pain.

I honestly am glad. I don't like MarySue!Shikamaru, because perfection in characters makes me sad. I'm glad to see him struggling a little.

Then there is the minor little detail of the whole reason they decided it was the "TA"ctics book in the first place, which would suddenly make no sense if you changed books.

Yeah, I knew someone would mention that. It worried me too, I had a look at the raw to see what the book cover looked like, but no 'ta'.

In an on-line Japanese/English dictionary, I did find two words, taiken and taisei, both start with 'ta' and both mean great sage, so if the message was meant for him, that is a possibility *shrugs*

Well, you have to keep in mind that they don't know about Jiraiya's first book so they won't know to use it - then it's not really Shikamaru's fault. Honestly I don't really know why people think that they used the wrong book - "the real one isn't with them" makes total sense to me.
