Eighty-two. =]
Nov. 1st, 2008 02:12 pmI didn't see any discussions on episode eighty-two of shippuden, so I'd like to know every ones opinons.
Honestly, I was extremely impressed, from the beginning to the end. Especially the beginning. It was probably the best animated episode. They really did well with the colors, and plot.
I felt really connected with Shikamaru, and normally when characters cry outrageously I cover my eyes because it's horribly cheesy, but this time for some reason I got rather emotional and almost cried myself.
Even though this was kind of a filler (since half of what was in the episode wasn't in the manga) it's my favorite episode.
What about you? On a scale of 1-10 ten being amazing, what would you rate it? I'm definitely giving it a very high nine, maybe even ten. =]

Date: 2008-11-01 06:47 pm (UTC)I'd give the episode an 8 or 9, probably. I personally only wish they'd saved that pretty animation for an episode where something actually happens, haha! *dodges flames*

Date: 2008-11-01 07:36 pm (UTC)The animation was great and that scene with Shikamaru and Shikaku was so powerful- it almost gave me chills.
I also like that we got to "meet" Chouji's mom (even if she's technically filler) and that we now have some (albiet kinda half-assed) explanation as to how that huge hole Hidan gets stuck in actually gets there. (I would joke to myself that Shika decided to start digging a huge hole at the age of 5 since there really wasn't any other plausible explanation xD.)
Let's just hope that the Shikamaru/Hidan fight is as epic and poingnant as this episode.

Date: 2008-11-01 08:09 pm (UTC)Great episode!
Sanee said it, but when Shikamaru and Shikaku were playing shogi, the subtle changes in Shikamaru's posture and the way his dad passively wore him down (like a river would a stone, to be all zen about it) was brilliant. That pervasive "clack-clack" of shogi tiles was well delivered; it sounded almost like a metronome, measured and even, but with the little pauses saying volumes about what was going on in the players' minds.
And when Shikamaru rallied after his breakdown and started formulating the plan to take down Hidan and Kakuzu... great directing, great angles, great delivery.
Kudos to the director and the art co-ordinators on this one. The whole thing was smooth, brilliantly lit, full of motion and life (OMG Konoha Children!!!...and Chouji's mama). Definitely made Konoha seem more lively and organic than it had in a long while. Even though Naruto was barely an afterthought in this episode, the delivery was fucking awesome. BIG 11 out of 10. Maybe the best-animated thing I've seen from Naruto ever.

Date: 2008-11-01 08:31 pm (UTC)All the little details they added were awesome. One of the few times I actually *like* "filler". I could list everything, but my favorite thing besides the shogi game was all the glimpses of Konoha's children/future shinobi. EXCELLENT FORESHADOWING. When Shika finally went to Asuma's grave, and the kids were putting flowers there..and he said "arigatou"...OMG, that made my heart hurt in such a good way.
Why can't every episode be done this well?

Date: 2008-11-02 12:09 am (UTC)This gives me hope for future episode to come. I never took the time to watch an episode fully when the Sora filler started, but now I'm going to AND watch the subs from now on <3
10/10 fer sure.

Date: 2008-11-02 12:42 am (UTC)Can't believe that they actually managed not to make the breakdown-scene too cheesy. It was... well, ART! *dogdes rotten tomatoes*
Seriously though, it was heart-wrenching, beautiful and... just... wow. I'll probably never watch that part again - it hurt so much when he cried like that.

Date: 2008-11-02 02:32 am (UTC)Yes, Shikamaru is my favourite character and I was looking forward to this arc, but this episode exceeded my most hopeful expectations. It captured the trail of sorrow very well, deeply emotional without feeling fake at all, and the animations was great. It somewhat felt like different animating style, but that happens when series go on for so long. I liked the new look anyway.
Beautiful episode which is, I think, now my favourite. I hope they keep treating this arc well, as it is a great one with so many great and complicated emotions in a very great and complicated character. ;)

Date: 2008-11-02 05:45 am (UTC)It was very introspective, showcasing and expanding upon the dissonance between Shikamaru's grief and his duties, which require him to move on very quickly. This is so the audience can more easily empathize with him, making his crying scene all the more poignant. The excellent art and animation is quite a visual treat, and somehow adds something to Shikamaru's changes in body language throughout the shogi scene.
Ugh, bullshitting ramble. Also, like a commenter above, I noticed a different animation style.

Date: 2008-11-03 01:58 pm (UTC)The whole shougi scene was just beautiful, and probably my favorite part of the episode. I especially loved at the end of it--Shikaku saying "I'll pick up the pieces." Metaphor, anyone?
And to see Shikamaru break down. Even though I saw it in the manga over two years ago... It was just so poignant and sad here.
But..I must take a moment to have a small fangirl squee.
Chouji's Mama! God, she's so cute and squishy. I wanted to hug her. And she's just how I'd pictured her too. The kind of woman that could smother you with her love, literally.
Who else loved that Shikamaru can just walk into their house unannounced, because they know him so well (and probably see him as another son?) It made me smile--the closeness of the Nara and Akimichi families are really showcased here.
Also, the Akimichi Mountain was really kinda bad ass. I also found it cute that you could hear Chouji's stomach from that far away. He's so adorable. And was that stubble on his chin, or just dirt? Hee hee. ♥
/end fangirling.
And the three kneeling by Asuma's grave--placing down things that defined them as people and as a team---it was really a sweet and lovely scene. No matter what people say about Team 7 as a family---I will always believe Team 10 was the most close-knit and familial of all the teams of Konoha. ♥
This episode was done so, so well. I'm really impressed.
