New episode of Naruto will cost us?
Nov. 28th, 2008 10:14 pmFirst of all, we’d like to clarify a few things. TV Tokyo has announced that it will begin streaming English subtitled Naruto Shippuuden via Crunchyroll approximately one hour after it airs in Japan (that would be sometime early Thursday morning EST) on January 8, 2009. This service will not be free, but will most likely require a subscription or a small fee per episode. According to ANN, this service will be “worldwide”. After a week, the episodes will be available for free. (Read more here.)
Viz Media has also announced that it will begin streaming free English subtitled Naruto Shippuuden episodes a week after airing via their official site Naruto.com as well as the services Joost and Hulu. This will begin January 15, 2009. These episodes will be free. In order to get viewers “caught up” to the current episode, Viz will be releasing 8 Naruto Shippuuden episodes, starting with episode 1, every Friday starting on January 2, 2009 via the aforementioned services. (Read more here).
They did not specify the amount we'll have to pay for each episode but I'm not really delighted to hear we've got to wait 7 days before downloading it for free...
I usually don't like to cause trouble, but...

Thanks for the info on this, though. Pretty interesting!

Date: 2008-11-29 03:41 am (UTC)Well if they put the videos on crunchy, will they lag because of the insane number of people trying to access it?
Lol "worldwide" my ass. I'm not sure about you guys, but last time I tried accessing Hulu and Joost, I was told I wasn't an american citizen therefore I can't access anything.

Date: 2008-11-29 07:35 am (UTC)We used to have to wait a lot longer than a week for subs before SpeedSubbing really took off. Heck, for many series we still have to wait! (How long has it been since the last ep of Monochrome Factor was released? *shakes head*)

Date: 2008-11-30 08:12 pm (UTC)But, a lot of the time, the Industry does not give us that. What they DO give us is a watered-down, horribly slashed apart, Americanized product. If I wanted something American, I'd watch an American series. I've turned to the fansubbers, because I know that with them, I don't have to worry about losing content because a. overcompensation for culture difference (You won't understand that, you're not Japanese!) or b. censorship. (Yes, I know the violence in anime in Japan is censored, as well--but there's a lot more that's censored here.)
They also cut a lot of series over here for children. While yes, Naruto and series like it were for children in Japan; what they can show their children on TV, and what we are allowed to show ours are two different things.
But, this whole thing is interesting---and I'm very intrigued to see what TV Tokyo does. I hope it will be something good. (They are the original broadcasting company for it, so I would suspect it will be.) The Industry has a good chance here; they shouldn't squander it.
Here's crossing my fingers.

Date: 2008-11-30 08:41 pm (UTC)It will definitely be interesting to see how TV Tokyo handles this. I hope it's for the best, as well!
Mostly I just get sick of people thinking they're entitled to free anime. Not saying that everyone (or even the OP) is like that, but there's a shit ton of people who act that way. :/
Re: I usually don't like to cause trouble, but...
Date: 2008-11-30 09:03 pm (UTC)That was the point a lot of people were trying to get across at the Industry v. Fansub panel at Otakon; but the Industry didn't take time to listen (they were supposed to come outside the panel room at the end, and answer questions, like the fansubbers did, but they ran out the back). A lot of people are in our same boat: They'd love to support the industry, but they don't want to pay out the nose for crap.
The only industry person who'd listen to my friend and I about this subject was the nice guy who ran the Funimation booth. And he was glad to hear what we had to say.
And there will always be people like that--and a lot of them, are the ones that are the reasons for the Cease and Desist issuements, and the problems between Fansubbers and Industry (A lot of the problems the Industry people had were the Youtube streams, etc. And while the fansubbers have told people to stop (due to the fact that this DOES get legal attention), they never do.)
