This isn't what I had expected...

First of all, we’d like to clarify a few things. TV Tokyo has announced that it will begin streaming English subtitled Naruto Shippuuden via Crunchyroll approximately one hour after it airs in Japan (that would be sometime early Thursday morning EST) on January 8, 2009. This service will not be free, but will most likely require a subscription or a small fee per episode. According to ANN, this service will be “worldwide”. After a week, the episodes will be available for free. (Read more here.)

Viz Media has also announced that it will begin streaming free English subtitled Naruto Shippuuden episodes a week after airing via their official site Naruto.com as well as the services Joost and Hulu. This will begin January 15, 2009. These episodes will be free. In order to get viewers “caught up” to the current episode, Viz will be releasing 8 Naruto Shippuuden episodes, starting with episode 1, every Friday starting on January 2, 2009 via the aforementioned services. (Read more here).

They did not specify the amount we'll have to pay for each episode but I'm not really delighted to hear we've got to wait 7 days before downloading it for free...

I usually don't like to cause trouble, but...

...imagine that, having to pay for anime.

The industry isn't going to keep itself alive on its own, you know.

Thanks for the info on this, though. Pretty interesting!

Here here, I agree. I like paying for my anime, it makes more sense to me. Besides if they didn't charge us, I'm sure the quality would start to drop because they'd have no money or even worse it'd be next to impossible to obtain like it used to be.

I have no problem paying for anime if it is done well, and faithfully to the original product.

But, a lot of the time, the Industry does not give us that. What they DO give us is a watered-down, horribly slashed apart, Americanized product. If I wanted something American, I'd watch an American series. I've turned to the fansubbers, because I know that with them, I don't have to worry about losing content because a. overcompensation for culture difference (You won't understand that, you're not Japanese!) or b. censorship. (Yes, I know the violence in anime in Japan is censored, as well--but there's a lot more that's censored here.)

They also cut a lot of series over here for children. While yes, Naruto and series like it were for children in Japan; what they can show their children on TV, and what we are allowed to show ours are two different things.

But, this whole thing is interesting---and I'm very intrigued to see what TV Tokyo does. I hope it will be something good. (They are the original broadcasting company for it, so I would suspect it will be.) The Industry has a good chance here; they shouldn't squander it.

Here's crossing my fingers.

Yea, I feel the same way. That's why I tend to follow the Japanese releases, myself...although censorship is nowhere near as bad as it used to be, I would also prefer to have the raw thing (in terms of censorship, as I obviously am not fluent in the original language...). I think a lot more people would be willing to purchase American releases if the companies would just realize that. But, ah, different country, different idea of what's okay in the media. It's a shame. And something I've always considered! I've been an anime fan for probably seven years or so...

It will definitely be interesting to see how TV Tokyo handles this. I hope it's for the best, as well!

Mostly I just get sick of people thinking they're entitled to free anime. Not saying that everyone (or even the OP) is like that, but there's a shit ton of people who act that way. :/
From: [identity profile] utahimelorelei.livejournal.com
Completely understandable. I agree.

That was the point a lot of people were trying to get across at the Industry v. Fansub panel at Otakon; but the Industry didn't take time to listen (they were supposed to come outside the panel room at the end, and answer questions, like the fansubbers did, but they ran out the back). A lot of people are in our same boat: They'd love to support the industry, but they don't want to pay out the nose for crap.

The only industry person who'd listen to my friend and I about this subject was the nice guy who ran the Funimation booth. And he was glad to hear what we had to say.

And there will always be people like that--and a lot of them, are the ones that are the reasons for the Cease and Desist issuements, and the problems between Fansubbers and Industry (A lot of the problems the Industry people had were the Youtube streams, etc. And while the fansubbers have told people to stop (due to the fact that this DOES get legal attention), they never do.)

Well if they put the videos on crunchy, will they lag because of the insane number of people trying to access it?

Lol "worldwide" my ass. I'm not sure about you guys, but last time I tried accessing Hulu and Joost, I was told I wasn't an american citizen therefore I can't access anything.

I think they mean on Crunchyroll, it'll be worldwide. But yeah, I doubt it will be for Viz. :P

I'm a poor college student, too. The episode releases keep me going. I know that sounds retarded, but I like to escape school work for a while.

I wonder how good the translation on those subtitles is going to be on the ones that are released an hour after airing in Japan. They're gonna have to sub them ahead of time or really quickly.

Well then I will be cheap and wait a damn week. I've done it before, so what? I remember waiting for fansubs and it took a while in the past as well. Oh well.
I guess they need more funds coming in after all the pirating and whatnot.

Guess they gotta try and make a buck somehow before those EVIL FANSUB groups get to them. I'm slightly interested in the quality of the subs they'll add, but meh... because of my sucky bandwidth watching episodes is pretty much out of the question for me anyway. D:

So seeing as the biggest group subbing it is going to be stopping I think this is fantastic news. ono! if we don't pay for it will be behind a week the world will end due to a weeks wait..

Waiting a week will not be the end of the world. I'm more concerned about the quality of the subbing and being able to access it at all as I do not live in the US. I know they say it will be worldwide, but I guess we'll have to wait and see on that one.

We used to have to wait a lot longer than a week for subs before SpeedSubbing really took off. Heck, for many series we still have to wait! (How long has it been since the last ep of Monochrome Factor was released? *shakes head*)

More than likely subscribers are going to rip it off the site and put it up on Bittorrent.

I'm not worried.

I don't care about waiting a week. I've read the manga I know what is going to happen.

I just can't wait for everyone's head to explode when the subs include the phrase "Believe it!"

Some other fansubbing group will be doing Shippuden. there's nothing to worry about. And waiting a week before you can watch the episode will not kill you.
