Since Kisame recognizes Madara as the Mizukage, is this the same Mizukage that Zabuza failed to overthrow?

It sounds feasible, but who knows if Kishimoto was planning a nugget like this that far in advance? Given the weirdness of last year's arc, I'd say it wasn't planned.

Also, and this just occurred to me, but I can't recall if the Akatsuki was even formed (and subsequently Madara leading them) at the time of Zabuza's expulsion from the village. He'd been a missing-nin for a few years before the storyline started.
(But then I'm overthinking it =P.)

A friend of mine came up with that theory several months ago. It sounded very interesting, Zabuza being an anti-hero the *entire* time if Madara was Mizukage back then.

I was thinking the same thing the other day but I didn't gave it much thought because I would have needed to re-read those chapters... I see a comment here asking if Kishi had everything in advaced? My opinion? of course he does! even when people complain to me Naruto isn't writen on his whims... it would have ended ages ago because of many inconsistences I think that that is really an option... but I don't think we will find out

I thought Madara claimed/explained that when he was kicked out the village by his clan he went and founded Mist? Which explained why their academy graduation exams were along the same bloody practices as Roots'.

Which would be nicely ironic that Zabuza was trying to overthrow him and Konoha got called in for help, rofl.

It would also give ties between Mist and the Root which might end up making sense if Suigetsu is meant to be Sai's long-lost "brother".

Madara being the Mizukage Zabuza rebelled against makes perfect sense when you consider the village's tradition of making 2 students fight to death as part of their academy graduation. That is the same tradition that Madara mentions when he is telling Sasuke the history of the Uchiha clan.

That's an interesting speculation! Though it has a flaw: Zabuza wouldn't have a reason to rebel against Hidden Mist's leader (whoever it was) and that practice of bloody academy graduation because that form of exam was ended when Zabuza hadn't even graduated. After that bloodbath Zabuza performed Mist dropped that practice.

I think Madara's role in Mist's politics is different. To me the fact that it was Kisame, the missing-nin and S-criminal acknowledged as such by Mist and listed in inter-village bingo book, who called Madara Mizukage is an evidence that Madara could be a master-mind of that abortive coup that Zabuza took part in. Of course Madara would be legal Mizukage to those rebels turned missing-nins.

We never really know what made Zabuza decide to stage a coup. He could have just wanted to be in charge.

What if Madara really is the Mizukage and Kisame is a missing-nin the same way Itachi was a missing nin? Meaning he technically isn’t missing, but a way for the village leaders to accomplish something larger. In chapter 397 Madara reveals that he and Itachi were keeping secrets from one another. If Madara really is the Mizukage and Kisame is working undercover for him, it makes sense that Kisame is Madara’s way of keeping tabs on Itachi?
