The Truth about the Nine-Tails
[As Kabuto names each summoned member of Akatsuki, we get a close-up of the summoned man's face.]
KABUTO: "ここにある イタチ サソリ デイダラ カクズ そして…ナガト"
"koko ni aru Itachi, Sasori, Deidara, Kakuzu, soshite... Nagato."
"Here, I have Itachi, Sasori, Deidara, Kakuzu, and Nagato."
[PAGE 2: Kabuto makes a very Orochimaru-esque face. His eyes are showing the snake-like lines more clearly now.]
"どれも強者揃いだ… それに… ボクの持ってる駒はこれだけじゃない"
"dore mo kyousha soroi da... sore ni... boku no motteru koma ha kore dake ja nai."
"A collection of strong men beyond any other... In addition, these are not the only pieces I hold."
[T/N: He's using the word one might use for a chess or shougi piece.]
[Madara is quiet for a frame before answering.]
MADARA: "見返りは？"
"mikaeri ha?"
"What's my collateral?"
KABUTO: "うちはサスケ ..."
"Uchiha Sasuke ..."
MADARA: "... 何を企んでる？""... nani wo takuranderu?"
"...What are you plotting?"
KABUTO: "…別に何も… ボクの興味は忍術の純粋な心理"
"...betsu ni nani mo... boku no kyoumi ha ninjutsu no junsui na shinri"
"Nothing in particular... My interest is the pure study of the mental workings of the ninja arts."

"I simply require Sasuke-kun for the sake of that quest. I want the living one -- that young, delicate Uchiha man."
[T/N: ::shudder:: But moving on... I'm not sure exactly why Kabuto is using the past tense of the verb "to live" here in his description of Sasuke. Is he referring to the Uchiha massacre in general? The fight with Itachi, given that he can summon Itachi's corpse but that this is not the same as a living Uchiha? He also specifies "human" when he says "Uchiha no ningen", but I don't think much needs to be read into this. The description of "sensai" refers strictly to Sasuke's appearance, I believe. I've seen it used both to describe someone with a weak constitution and to describe someone who appears frail or pretty. I wasn't really expecting it here.]
[The focus shifts back to Madara and Kabuto's conversation]
MADARA: "…断ると言ったら？"
"... kotowaru to ittara?"
"... and if I should say that I refuse?"
[Kabuto claps his hands to perform his jutsu again.]
SPLASH: 口寄せ 穢土転生！！
kuchiyose edo tensei!!
Summon: Worldly Ressurection!!
[One more coffin appears between Kabuto and Madara. When it falls open, Madara seems disturbed by the contents.]
MADARA: "…！？ こ…これは！！"
"...!? ko... kore ha!!"
"...!? Th... This is...!!"
[PAGE 4: Madara stands between our viewpoint and the open coffin, keeping the reader from seeing its contents.]
KABUTO: "ボクが何の手札もなく君に会いにくるとでも？ そう… 君は断れない！"
"boku ga nan no tefuda mo naku kimi ni ai ni kuru to demo? sou... kimi ha kotowarenai!"
"Did you think I'd come to meet you with no cards in my hand whatsoever? You see... you will not refuse!"
MADARA: "キサマ… それをどこで手に入れた！？"
"kisama... sore wo doko de te ni ireta!?"
"You bastard... where did you get your hands on that!?"
KABUTO: "色々とね… …安心していいよ これは誰にも喋ってない"
"iro-iro to ne... anshin shite ii yo. kore ha dare ni mo shabettenai."
"Oh, here and there... but you can rest easy. I won't tell anyone of this."
[PAGE 5: After a moment's silence, Madara begins chuckling.]
KABUTO: "何かおかしいことでも？"
"nanika okashii koto demo?"
"You find something amusing?"
MADARA: "薬師カブト お前がここまでの器になるとはな…思ってもみなかった"
"kusushi Kabuto. omae ha koko made no utsuwa ni naru to ha na... omottemo minakatta."
"The medic Kabuto. So your capacity has developed this far... I thought it might, but I never saw it."
"…今お前と揉めてもこちらの戦力が低下するだけ… この機を狙ってここへ来るとは… 用意周到な奴だ"
"...ima omae to mometemo kochira no senryoku ga teika suru dake... kono ki wo neratte koko he kuru to ha... youishuutou na yatsu da."
"...Even if I were to trouble myself with you now, I'd only be decreasing my own strength in this war... You came here aiming for that opportunity. You're quite well prepared."
KABUTO: "という事は？"
"to iu koto ha?"
"Which is to say...?"
MADARA: "いいだろう 手を組んでやる …ただし"
"ii darou. te wo kunde yaru. ...tadashi"
"Fine. I'll join forces with you. ...However--"

"Handing over Sasuke happens after I see the results of the war. Until then, I won't let you see Sasuke."
"それから監視も付けさせてもらう"

"And after that, I'll have you under surveillance."
KABUTO: "物分かりのいい方だ さすがは うちはマダラ… 器が違う"
"monowakari no ii kata da. sasuga ha Uchiha Madara... utsuwa ga chigau."
"You're a very perceptive fellow. Well, that's Uchiha Madara for you... You're of a different caliber."
MADARA: "… 生意気な奴だ… …お前の持つ戦力を確認してから作戦を練り直す…{付}いて{来}い"
"... namaiki na yatsu da... omae no motsu senryoku wo kakuninshite kara sakusen wo narinaosu... tsuite koi."
"...Aren't you a cocky one? ...After I confirm the battle power in your grasp, I'll remake my strategy. Follow me."
[Kabuto smiles in an Orochimaru-esque fashion as Madara turns his back, and he closes up the sixth summoned coffin]

JOUNIN 1: "こんな偏狭な地にわざわざ死体を… 倒れている忍の流れからして この先に何かあるのは間違いない"

"If he's leaving these dead bodies in such a tight region on purpose... judging from the stream of fallen ninja, I'd say there's no doubt we'll find something this way."
JOUNIN 2: "罠では？"
"wana de ha?"
"Is it a trap?"
JOUNIN 1: "どうします？"
"doushimasu?"
"What should we do?"
ANKO: "トクマ！ ２時の方向白眼だ"
"Tokuma! Ni ji no houkou byakugan da."
"Tokuma! {Look with your} Byakugan toward two o'clock."
TOKUMA: "ハッ！"
"Ha!"
"Right!"
SPLASH: "白眼！！"
"Byakugan!!"

"What's wrong?"
TOKUMA: "カブトだけじゃない！…”暁”の仮面の男も一緒です！！地下ら しき入口に二人して入っていきます！"
"Kabuto dake ja nai! ... 'akatsuki' no kamen no otoko mo issho desu!! chikarashiki iriguchi ni futari shite itteikimasu!"
"It's not just Kabuto! ... He's also with a man from 'Akatsuki' who's wearing a mask!! The two of them are going into an entryway that seems to be underground!"
ANKO: "なんだと！？"
"nan da to!?"
"What's that!?"

JOUNIN 2: "そいつとカブトがなぜ一緒にいる？"
"soitsu to Kabuto ga naze issho ni iru?"
"Why are he and Kabuto together?"
JOUNIN 1: "手を組んだのか？"
"te wo kunda no ka?"
"Have they joined forces?"
ANKO: "カブトはわざと私達をここへ導いたのか？ マダラのアジトを知 らせるため…"
"Kabuto ha waza to watashi-tachi wo koko he michibiita no ka? Madara no ajito wo shiraseru tame..."
"Did Kabuto lead us to this place on purpose? To show us Madara's hideout...?"
JOUNIN 2: "しかし奴らが手をくんだとしたら何 故"
"shikashi yatsura ga te wo kunda toshitara, naze"
"But why, if we're to think they've joined forces?"
ANKO: "今はわからない… とにかくすぐにこの事を里へ知らせる！"
"ima ha wakaranai... tonikaku sugu ni kono koto wo sato he shiraseru!"
"I don't know just yet... For now, we'll tell the village about this immediately!"

[T/N - 無理もない [muri mo nai] is an idiomatic phrase meaning, essentially, "That's natural" or "I can understand that".]
FUKASAKU: "何なん？"
"Nan nan?"
"What's this, now?"

SCROLL FROG: "フカサク様…九尾の力ゆーのは ”九尾のチャクラ”と”九尾の意志”の二つが合わさってできとんじゃ"
"Fukasaku-sama... Kyuubi no chikara yu- no ha 'kyuubi no chakura' to 'kyuubi no ishi' no futatsu ga awasatte dekiton ja"
"Fukasaku-sama... when ya talk about the Nine-tail's power, you're talkin' about puttin' together 'the Nine-tail's chakra' and 'the Nine-tail's will'."

"The Nine-tail's will is a mass of hatred, a strong power that binds to chakra. No matter how strongly you yourself can endure, if he can latch onto hatred anywhere in your heart, he'll take control of your heart that way."

"The Fourth {Hokage} joined them in a sealing ritual that would let just a very little bit of clean chakra overflow from the Nine-tail's sealing cage and become Naruto's chakra naturally."
[T/N - the word that I've translated as "clean", uwazumi, literally refers to the "clear top of a liquid". It's like mixing dirt and water in a cup, and letting the dirt settle -- you can pour out a tiny fraction before the dirt starts to mix in enough to come out with the water, but not very much.]
[The focus returns to the scroll itself and the frogs]
"じゃがこの鍵を使えば四象封印を開け 九尾のチャ クラ全てを引き出せる…！"
"ja ga kono kagi wo tsukaeba, shishou fuuin wo ake, kyuubi no chakura subete wo hikidaseru...!"
"But if he uses this key, he'll remove the Four-Element seal and pull out all of the Nine-tail's chakra...!"

"If that's true... and all of the Nine-tail's will comes along with all of the Nine-tail's chakra--"
SCROLL FROG: "その九尾の意志にナルトの意志が負けた時点で――"

"If the time comes that Naruto's will loses its battle against the Nine-tail's will--"

"The truth is, the Four Element Seal has been growing weaker, and in order to suppress Naruto -- who was starting to transform into the Nine-tails mid-training [arbitrarily] -- the seal had to be closed with the key..."

NARUTO: "…確かに昔 大蛇丸とやった時は自分から九尾の力に頼って自分の意志を預ける事になっちまった サスケの事言われてカッとなっちまって… すぐにでも大蛇丸をやっつけたくてよ"
"...tashika ni mukashi Orochimaru to yatta toki ha jibun kara kyuubi no chikara ni tayotte jibun no ishi wo azukeru koto ni natchimatta. Sasuke no koto iwarete katto natchimatte... sugu ni demo Orochimaru wo yattsuketakute yo."
"... I can say for sure that, a while back when we were fighting with Orochimaru, I decided myself to rely on the Nine-tail's power and it ended with me giving over my own will. When I heard about Sasuke, I flew into a rage... I wanted to finish off Orochimaru as soon as possible."

"Now, even though I can rest easy because I had the seal remade by the Fourth {Hokage}, I don't know when it'll run wild again."
[Naruto recalls an image of Sasuke]
"だけど… サスケと戦うためにゃ九尾のチャクラが必要だ"

"But... in order to fight Sasuke, I'm going to need the Nine-tail's chakra."
" 結局オレは九尾の人柱力だ 本当はいつまでも逃げてらんねエ"

"In the end, I'm the Nine-tail's host. I really can't keep running away from that forever."

SCROLL FROG: "契約成立じゃ！蔵入りする！

"The contract is established! It is stored!"
FUKASAKU: "さあまずはタコ探しじゃな！"
"saa mazu ha, tako sagashi ja na!"
"First things first -- let's find us an octopus!"
[The scene changes to Kumo village, where Killerbee is working in a book labeled "Rhyme Notebook"]
KILLERBEE: (thinks) "韻が踏めてねーな …なんかいいフレーズがねーものか…"

"The rhyme isn't coming along... Isn't there any good phrase at all...?"

[T/N - I could have happily lived my whole life never translating this line.
Shii's words in the previous line are cut off when he says "では", a phrase that may be used to begin a conclusion, among many other things -- pronounced "de wa" but written with the hiragana characters "de ha". The "de" is made by adding a dakuten (those two little lines on the right) to the character "て" [te]. The purpose of a dakuten is to indicate that a character's consonant sound should be changed in pronunciation from an unvoiced sound to a voiced sound: 'ka' becomes 'ga', 'sa' becomes 'za', for example, and 'te' becomes 'de'. What Killerbee literally says he's doing in this line is "reversing which part takes the dakuten". Remove a dakuten from 'de' and the syllable becomes 'te'. Add a dakuten to 'ha' and the syllable becomes 'ba'. Thus, "de ha" becomes "te ba". His final change to make this sound more like rap is to add an emphasizing particle on the end, "yo", which gives the complete result: "tebayo". This just happens to be the (meaningless) phrase Naruto uses to end his statements when he's being particularly emphatic.
This is a lovely verbal game to use as a segue between Naruto's last scene and Killerbee's appearance in the chapter that, unfortunately, only makes real sense in Japanese. I hope the above English rendering works even a little. Kishimoto-sensei, I love you and hate you with the passion of a thousand suns.]

Shii's words in the previous line are cut off when he says "では", a phrase that may be used to begin a conclusion, among many other things -- pronounced "de wa" but written with the hiragana characters "de ha". The "de" is made by adding a dakuten (those two little lines on the right) to the character "て" [te]. The purpose of a dakuten is to indicate that a character's consonant sound should be changed in pronunciation from an unvoiced sound to a voiced sound: 'ka' becomes 'ga', 'sa' becomes 'za', for example, and 'te' becomes 'de'. What Killerbee literally says he's doing in this line is "reversing which part takes the dakuten". Remove a dakuten from 'de' and the syllable becomes 'te'. Add a dakuten to 'ha' and the syllable becomes 'ba'. Thus, "de ha" becomes "te ba". His final change to make this sound more like rap is to add an emphasizing particle on the end, "yo", which gives the complete result: "tebayo". This just happens to be the (meaningless) phrase Naruto uses to end his statements when he's being particularly emphatic.
This is a lovely verbal game to use as a segue between Naruto's last scene and Killerbee's appearance in the chapter that, unfortunately, only makes real sense in Japanese. I hope the above English rendering works even a little. Kishimoto-sensei, I love you and hate you with the passion of a thousand suns.]

Naruto and Killerbee will definitely have an interesting relationship. The comment about being pissed off, I think, is directed at his frustration over not being able to find a phrase he particularly likes, not at the sound "tebayo" -- but I hope this word play scenario is a theme he picks back up when they finally do meet. Even though it'll probably be just as tricky as this was to work with, I can't wait.
