I'm having a pretty awful day and want a story I can get lost in. I prefer genfic, but pairings are fine, as long as romance isn't the point of the story.

So, I was going through all the fics I had and I realized, with much dismay, most of them aren't gen at all. A lot are pairing-centric.

But, there is hope, as I have two to bring to you that are part of my favorites (both on fanfiction.net).

Long Way Home (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3399392/1/Long_Way_Home) by Chiisarin gives us a different look at the Sarutobi family. It's Rin-centric. And beware, I believe it's going to end up being Rin/Kakashi. The story is good and flows nicely.

Regression (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5787934/1/Regression) by missmelon12 is compelling because it's set in the future, where Sakura is a leader with bitterness in her heart and Neji tries to negotiate to heal severed bonds, despite his regrets of the past. Things suddenly change when they get pulled back in time and maybe get a second chance at setting things straight.
--Side note: I don't believe it will lean to NejiSaku, though the fic is unfinished and romance isn't exactly radiating between these two characters. :P

Morning Shows the Day, or, Iruka and Kakashi's Excellent Adventure (http://avocado-love.livejournal.com/156957.html#cutid1) part 2 (http://avocado-love.livejournal.com/158137.html#cutid1) part 2 (http://avocado-love.livejournal.com/159621.html#cutid1) by avocado_love - Ten-year-old Iruka finds himself on a battlefield - with a ten-year-old Kakashi. What the hell is going on? Lots of fun.

How to File Form 39-B (http://thehoyden.livejournal.com/158551.html#cutid1) whose opening line hooked me the first time I read it:
"The first time Iruka met Hatake Kakashi, he was still on some pretty good painkillers."
It has some really wonderful Iruka - Naruto interaction (Naruto setting off the smoke detector while cooking, for one thing). I wouldn't call it traditionally romantic, per se, but it does chronicle the long, slow development of a friendship & relationship between Kakashi and Iruka.

Strangely Together, Uniquely Apart (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4091185/1/Strangely_Together_Uniquely_Apart) is one of my absolute favorite gen fics out there, period. Kakashi and Iruka are sent out on a mission, and the two men come to an understanding about each other. The character interaction is spot-on, the writing is taut and suspenseful, and I read all five chapters in a single go. Definitely recommend it.

Also, Prerequisite (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3757050/1/Prerequisite) is a hilarious Team 7 gen fic where Kakashi has to teach everyone about the facts of life. Short but definitely a must read XD

I do so hate to pimp myself but "Panty Raid" by my alter-ego Darkflameangel might give you a chuckle. Also, firefly has some bloody AWESOME fics--- soo good. Plus with her you have the benefit of some serious crack pairings.. Same with Sharingank.

Hope that helps...Oh and if you ever get the urge for some more pairing oriented fics "Way of the Wind" by justenough is a lovely look at a nonmassacre Itachi. Silvershine also has some pretty sweet stuff as well. I adored "Duty before Honor".

Yes yes yes!! I checked ff.net everyday for it since she normally updates two chapters pretty closely together and then we're stuck waiting for a month for the next two.

I LOVE IT SO MUCH! She makes the characters seem soo real, and I know I'm gonna bawl my damn eyes how when Sakumo dies.

Most of these are pretty dark and angsty, while the last three are complete tearjerkers which I remember crying when I finished them I kid not you not.

Rosemary for Remembrance (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2215069/1/Rosemary_For_Remembrance): Familial drama within the House of Hyuuga. Hinata steps down as heir/head. Contains some NaruHina, Neji/Hina (I understand you might not be able to read it due to incest, but it's incredibly well written). Relationships are important, but are not the main focus.

The World Ends (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2946183/1/The_World_Ends): When it comes to Sasuke, living or dying for Sakura had never been a matter of choice. Dark!fic. Evil!Sasuke SasuSaku.

The Garden of Everything (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2781399/1/Garden_of_Sanctuary): An alternate ending to Naruto. Due to Naruto not being able to control the Kyuubi, the Konoha Council decide to imprison Naruto. NaruSaku

The Mourning After (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1888385/1/The_Mourning_After) Sakura dies. Naruto and Sasuke deal with Sakura's sacrifice in different ways. Gen. Team 7-centric.

Three Weeks, She Sleeps (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2697440/1/Three_Weeks_She_Sleeps): A mission where Sakura goes into a coma. Kakashi watches as Team 7 falls apart. Naru/Sasu, Implied KakaRin, Hints of NaruSasuSaku. (Keep in mind, it's very Kakash-centric and not romance-focused)
