Sharingan question.
Jun. 18th, 2007 11:46 amDo you think a Sharingan user can see in the dark? And if so, to what degree?
I don't recall this ever being addressed in the manga or anime, and can't seem to dig up anything about it online, other than the basics (what Sharingan can be used for; ect.). I could probably have looked a little harder, but I figured that all of you knowledgeable people over here could help me out.
Maybe?
Thanks for everyone's help! I have a pretty decent idea now, and some interesting ideas.
Again, thanks!
:D

Wow. This is a bit more complicated than I thought it would be.

Date: 2007-06-18 09:13 pm (UTC)That brings me back to when I first watched Naruto and thought "Why does that kid have kitty whiskers?"
Oh and as for answering I think it's one of those sensing movement things.
It can't exactly see in the dark but the user's mind makes up what their surroundings looks like and what is happening.
You know I even confused myself with that one.
Good question!

Date: 2007-06-19 03:51 am (UTC)I think your question deserves a 'yes' and a 'no', to be honest.
When you think about why the Sharingan makes it so that movements can be seen incredibly, and almost as if ahead of time...
You could say that perhaps Uchiha eyes have many times more Rods than a normal eye. This makes it so that light and movement are picked up much more sensitively than normal. A cat, for example, has like six times more Rods than humans do. That's about 12,000 stacks of 'em, which makes it so that they can 1) see very, very well at night and 2) pick up movement almost ungodly fast compared to human eyes. (Ever wonder why cats are so twitchy? =3)
So let's say that when the Sharingan activates, the chemical Rhodopsin (which is the stuff in the rods that absorbs light) is automatically over-activated which in turn causes the pupils to dilate so that more light can filter through AND so that movement can be more easily picked up.
In a way we could say that yes, if Uchiha Sharingan eyes are based on more Rods-- then they would also be able to see better in the dark, too.
(Not in pitch-black, though. Not even a cat can see in pitch-black.)
You could also think of it this way (I just thought of this right before I clicked 'post comment' XD)-- Maybe the red of the Sharingan isn't actually like a 'bleeding of color' onto the Iris like it looks like.
Maybe when the red appears it's actually because the eye is dilating. The red is actually the reaction to light reflecting off blood vessels within the eye itself. And if we wanna add in the cat's-eye-theory, we could say that an Uchiha's eye has an extra reflective surface inside already (to compliment the many Rods), so the light reflection on the dilated pupils is EVEN MORE dramatic because of this.
^_^ EH?

Date: 2007-06-19 11:14 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, there are a lot of unanswered details involved in this theory. =\ Things that aren't actually possible, at least not in what *actual* scientific study has uncovered in already existing, real creatures.
Questions like:
Is it possible to have so many Rods but still a healthy enough number of Cones for human eyes to function as they should? (Because what Cats and other nocturnal hunters have in Rods is decreased in Cones, which is probably not a coincidence. Because of this, their daytime eyesight is below satisfactory, and they also tend to be incredibly far-sighted. Would it be safe to say that perhaps all Uchiha who possess the Sharingan are far-sighted as well?)
Or...
Because of the actual nature of how Rods work with the brain and nervous system, how is it possible for someone with the Sharingan to not only 'see ahead' movements, but also copy them? You'd have to explain it as a phenomenon where all Uchiha possessing the Sharingan not only inherited the eyes, but also a further evolved brain. o.O (Rods don't display nearly as clear of a picture to the brain than Cones do. So you'd think that'd effect memory? Is it even possible to see something like hand-signs and memorize them within a millisecond? XD)
Oh em gee, brain break! /runs away screaming/
