I was merrily making icons from chapter 485 when I noticed something I had somehow overlooked the first time around...

Everything seems in order. Sasuke: Chidori. Naruto: Rasengan.

But then. Sasuke: RASENGAN. Naruto: CHIDORI. WHAT IS THIS.

Next page, back to our regularly scheduled program.

I was all ready to believe this was merely something Kishimoto and co. had overlooked before the chapter got sent to Jump, but a friend of mine thinks it might be intentional, because of the dialogue - a symbolic representation of standing in each others' shoes.

Thoughts? Has this chapter been put into a volume yet? If so, maybe somebody could confirm or deny...anything.

Totally did not notice that.

I would be inclined to think it's intentional - it mirrors the dialog in that box, and they've also swapped sides of the frame: in the top and bottom panels, Naruto is on the right, but in the middle, Sasuke is. So the techniques don't change sides - just the users, echoing the idea that they could be in each other's shoes. It's kind of a nifty visual detail.

Yeah, I noticed that. I really like that scene ♥
I still wonder about the possibility of having their sides switched.

XDDD. What with the text reading "been standing in each other's shoes right now," I think it's safe to say it's symbolic.

I always assumed it was Naruto imagining them in each other's places. It's not that great, since they're still wearing the same outfits and there's no real reason why they'd learn each other's techniques if their situations were switched, but...hey, they switch sides of the page, too!

Yeah I think it's symbolic. I mean there's no other to swap the side of the page they're on and I doubt Kishi messed up something THAT large.

it was definitely symbolic what with him talking about them being in each other's places :P

It's definitely symbolic. The text confirms it, along with the fact that the techniques don't flip sides as well. Just a little bit of visual symbolism to show how easy it would have been for either of them to take the other's path. Like with most stories, the difference between a "hero" and a "villain" is one decision, and it's usually the same decision for them both where either one could have taken the other option.

I believe it was meant to be symbolic. But I don't like how Kishi went about doing it. It's a bit annoying, considering all he seemed to do was switch their "abilities". =_= Probably just me, but I think the symbolism was pretty lame there. Especially in the middle of the battle.
